Summaries and Thoughts: Quiz Show 9
So here's this week's " Season 1 and 2 Parallels and a Theory " for The Quiz Show Golden ^^
So, episode 9 in a nutshell:
Honma askes for one more request from the mystery man to help put his final plans into motion... I am still thinking its his father considering how he addressed the person on the phone by his first name, I do not believe he's addressed Yoda (his assistant) by his first name.
" Allow me to continue the Quiz Show. This is my final request. "
Yoda doesn't have that much power. So I wonder what his father does? Who is his father?
Kamiyama has regained all of his memories except for the two final questions, Why did he lose his memories? and How did Misaki die if she didn't die at the accident? -- But with this, Kamiyama has intense hatred towards Honma for using him like a doll to seek revenge on the 8 people who were in, some way, connected to the Shinai Lake incident.
" Honma..."
" It's been a while, Kamiyama Satoru. What have you remembered thus far? "
" It's none of your business. "
" I see. Soon... you'll remember everything. "
" That's exactly what I want. "
We then fast foward to Honma emoing in his own self misery, watching videos of himself and Misaki as children in a flower field being projected on a wall.
" I'm Niita Misaki, 5 years old. My dream is to be Honma-kun's bride. "
" Yes, I want to marry you too! "
So then we're taken roughly 13 years into the future, at Shinai Lake, where Kamiyama and Honma have a discussion at the fireplace. Kamiyama talks to Honma about Misaki, and wonders if Honma likes Misaki. Honma doesn't say much of anything on the subject, but Kamiyama tells Honma that he's planning on confessing to her the next day. Apparently he's not to happy with the news from Kamiyama.
Then Honma and Yoda converse with each other. Yoda lets him know the latest news, and that everything is going according to plan, but then as he hands him a pill in a vial, he askes him:
" Can you please reconsider it one last time ?"
" I've already decided. "
Its the air date, and Chief Tadokoro lets Saejima know that the show will continue. Saejima is considering returning back to the journalism department, but Yamanobe convinces her to stay in the Variety Department. He wants her to let the show continue, because he feels as if Honma is going to die if it doesn't go through. Having the show continue is the only way to save Honma. Takasugi, prior to the show, confronts Honma to let him know that after the show she (probably) is going to quit -- But he quickly lets her know that he wants her to assume the role of Director. Gen-san chews Honma out and punches him, but Honma still puts Takasugi in the Director's chair. Saejima confirms his descision.
The show begins and Kamiyama starts it off. Everyone in the studio is tense, no one knows what Honma has planned...
" ... I am your host, Honma Toshio, and our contestant today is Kamiyama Satoru! "
Everyone is thrown off guard, but they continue. Honma taunts the situation, explaining to the audience that it'd be nice to know all about their host, Kamiyama. And as he continues, he directs his attentions directly to Kamiyama: " Are you scared to become a contestant? "
Kamiyama responds with, " I'll do it. Whatever you have planned. "
Kamiyama's Dream: To know the truth. What happened between them and Honma's true intentions.
The staff finally realizes after 9 weeks that everything that has happened is the same as the Yamanobe incident 2 years ago. Everyone, let's facepalm this. *FACEPALM* The staff is against continuing the show, they don't want to lose their jobs and they don't want to be involved with a repeat incident. But Saejima tells them to continue the program, remembering what Yamanobe himself told her.
So the show rolls on, Kamiyama clears the first question which is automatically a personal question about his past. How old was he when his mother died. Honma uses this to add salt to the wound, mentioning how Kamiyama's own father felt losing his wife and then says, " Kamiyama-san, everyone loses someone special... "
He clears question 2.
Then they speak about when they first met Misaki when they were in Kindergarden, how they played with her every single day near her house. Honma then askes Kamiyama what was her favorite book, " The End of the World ". That book was the reason why they took their graduation trip -- Kamiyama was also the one who had planned the trip to Shinai Lake because he believed she'd enjoy the poppy fields. It was also for her birthday.
He clears question 3.
Honma speaks of the day of the trip, which was also Misaki's birthday. The plane ride they had schduled was to take an aerial view of the lake, and Honma was originally supposed to join them. But he decided not to fly. Then the plane crashed and Honma watched it happen and ran to the site, where he then saw the commotose Misaki and cried over her body.
The doctor lets them know that Misaki would be in a vegetative state.
He clears question 4.
Honma taunts Kamiyama again, stating that he should take responsibility for her death. That if she not rode on the plane, she'd been alive today. Honma continues to press and mentions that after the accident, Misaki was still alive.
" But then why did she die? Could it been... you?! "
" You're wrong! It wasn't me. "
" Fine. You'll remember everything soon. "
Kamiyama clears question 5, that Kamiyama had pulled a piece of scrap metal from Misaki's body... which, Honma believes, was the reason why she was in the state that she ended up being in. Honma walks to Kamiyama and talks about how Misaki had lack of oxygen, which also lead to her vegetative state... And subsequentally chokes him,
" Look! Are you suffering? This is exact condition Misaki was in... "
He clears question 6.
Kamiyama, after Misaki's death, jumped off of the hospital's roof.
Honma explains that Kamiyama was in a coma for six years and that two years ago Kamiyama woke up and Honma picked him to be the host. So Honma askes him, why did he lose his memories. Kamiyama replies with he didn't know...
" You don't know? Hun? That is why we're here today!! " Honma says.
Kamiyama clears question 7, the person who he confessed to at Shinai Lake was Misaki.
So Kamiyama takes the challenge for the Dream Chance, claming that he would make it through any question that comes his way.
Dream Chance: What was the cause of Misaki's death?
Honma presents Kamiyama with a coin, a coin that Honma made based off of daisies from the book Misaki liked. Misaki held the coin in her hand when she died, and that the coin fell from her hand when Kamiyama removed the oxygen mask from her face.
" It's not possible. I couldn't have done that! "
" I know everything about you."
" It wasn't me! "
" Kamiyama ... It's your turn. "
Kamiyama remembers Shinai Lake again and the bet he made with Honma about confessing to Misaki. Annoyed at the fact he was dumped, he tosses the coin to Honma and tells him,
" It's your turn. She said she liked someone else. In other words, its like she betrayed me. If that's how it is, I shouldn't have expected nothing in the first place! "
Honma punches Kamiyama in anger. Kamiyama feels as if Misaki taunted him, lead him on, with her kindness....
So Kamiyama realizes he actually did kill Misaki...
" I killed her... "
" Yes... But why?! "
" I was betrayed... "
So Kamiyama clears all the questions, stuck with the guilt of knowing he actually did kill Misaki... or did he?
After the show, Kamiyama is in the white room and looks at himself in the mirror. Angry with himself, he breaks the mirror and falls to the floor in misery. But then Yoda enters and gives Kamiyama a letter from Misaki that was written at Shinai Lake.
" Why? "
" Since Toshio-san was born, I was always at his side. If I was to lose him now, I would not be able to bear it. Ah, speaking of which... you forgot this at the studio. "
Yoda hands him the coin. Kamiyama remembers everything.
Maybe things are not what they seem...
Now for ep thoughts\
I have a feeling this is going to end like Season 1, Kamiyama now finally remembering what happened is going to put Honma in the contestant seat and make him come to terms with the fact that Misaki's death was his fault all along. Just like Yamanobe in the first Quiz Show, which is why Yamanobe told him that " Everything you do will come right back to you ".
Yamanobe is working through Saejima, but also, Yoda's maternal love for Honma is working for Kamiyama. So now Kamiyama has all the dices on his side and he just has to roll them in his favor. Much like in Season 1, where Yamanobe's assistant and private detective eventually betrayed him to help Tazaki realize the truth and free Yamanobe from his insanniity.
For season 1 fans, it seems as if the Season finale won't be as spectacular as we had wanted, but on the flip side for Season 2 fans that haven't watched Season 1, the season finale will probably be mind blowing.
As for Honma, it was referrenced that Honma was going to commit suicide after the show ended and this was backed up in the last scene where Kamiyama spots Honma on the hospital roof, standing over the ledge just after Misaki's death. I am assuming that Honma is so obessed and madly in love with Misaki, that he can't stand living without her. I think he didn't expect Kamiyama to remember and probably wanted Kamiyama to deal with the guilt of not one, but two, deaths on his conscience.
As Homa said, Kamiyama's prize for clearing the Quiz Show was to repent for his crimes.
