Even if you look at it... (S2 Finale thoughts)
There's been one thing about the finale that has been bugging me endlessly.
Even though Honma did the deed and killed Misaki by giving her a lethal injection, I do not like how Kamiyama walked away from the situation with clean hands. If you look at the entire situation -- Everything that happened between Honma, him, and Misaki was due to Kamiyama's pride. Had Kamiyama admitted to Honma that he had lost the bet and that Misaki had in fact loved Honma, then we would have avoided:
a) Honma not joining them on the aerial tour
b) Honma suffering with the guilt of not being able to take Misaki to the poppy fields to declare his love
c) Honma suffering with the thought that Misaki never loved him
d) Honma holding inner resentment against Kamiyama for what he had told him -- which probably lead to Honma twisting his memories, because he still resented Kamiyama for what he said about Misaki.
What Kamiyama did was the catalyst for the fall of their relationship. If Kamiyama had told Honma, none of this would have happened. So Kamiyama walking away from the situation with a clean slate and no burden for what happened isn't fair. IMO. Even if in some way it didn't carry much malicious intent, it still seemed like a selfish move.
Also, Honma is right in the fact that Misaki's ultimate end in a coma was due to Kamiyama's lack of attention to the fact that she had been floating in the water for a long period of time. Had Kamiyama assessed the situation and checked for her vitals... maybe she would have been alive today. Of course the shock of finding an object in her side left him in shock -- He should have taken better control of the situation.
Though there seems a lot of scenes didn't make the cut.
Why was Kamiyama knocked out at the lake side when Honma started begging for help?
What was Honma listening to before the final episode of the Quiz Show aired?
I wonder if more explination will be on the DVDs as a marketing ploy to get us to buy them?
Also, here's the final time line:
- Misaki, Honma, and Kamiyama are friends and seniors in High School
- Kamiyama plans a graduation trip. It's a bus tour of Shinai Lake, he's doing this for Misaki's birthday that's on the 1st of April.
- They go on the trip. Set up camp at Shinai Lake
- Misaki and Kamiyama are having drinks by the riverbed, and met Andou
- Kamiyama and Misaki are fishing by the river side and run into Mika, who introduces herself
- Kamiyama goes off to collect firewood for the campfire and runs into a drunk Kenji Miyamoto
- Honma goes off to speak with Andou, as Misaki and Kamiyama sit by the fire they made. Noriko (Yuutenji Nokko) gives them a plate of food.
- Kamiyama and Misaki make curry for dinner and meet Katsuragi that give them curry sauce
- Kamiyama and Honma talk about Misaki - Kamiyama tells Honma he's going to confess his affections for her the next day. They make a bet.
The next day - The accident, April 1st 2002 (her birthday):
- Misaki and Kamiyama make breakfast
- Kamiyama calls Misaki to the bridge and askes her to go out with him, she rejects him saying she's in love with Honma
- Kamiyama tells Misaki to not say anything, but to "surprise" Honma by writing a letter -- because she didn't have the courage to tell Honma herself -- and to wait after they had the flight.
- Kamiyama goes back to the camp site rejected and gives Honma the coin, saying its his turn. Kamiyama taunts Honma and in return Honma punches him.
- Kamiyama and Misaki decide to take an aerial tour of the island, Shibata is the pilot and its on the plane Egypt 20-3
- Kamiyama runs to call Honma to remind them of the trip. Honma tells them he decided that he didn't want to go because he's angry with Kamiyama.
- Misaki and Kamiyama ride instead, leaving Honma behind, and the plane crashes due to engine failure.
- Kamiyama saves Misaki from the water. He finds the metal in her body and pulls it out. He stands over her body in shock.
- Honma discovers the two.
- Saejima runs to them while filming letting them know emergency aid is on the way
- Kamiyama passes out, Honma cries over Misaki.
- They're taken to Shinai Lake hospital
- Doctor lets them know that Misaki will never wake up
Misaki's Death, April 4th 2002:
- Honma injects a lethal dose of medicine into Misaki's IV, slowly stopping her respiratory system.
- Honma tapes his will, sucide note, and confession for Kamiyama
- Honma removes Misaki's oxygen mask, kisses her goodbye, and leaves the coin in her hand
- Kamiyama finds Misaki and puts the mask back on and runs out in a hurry to find Honma
- Kamiyama finds Honma standing over the ledge of the hospital building
- The two scuffle, Kamiyama falls over by accident.
- Kamiyama is in a coma
- Saejima's report about the Shinai Lake Plane Crash is aired and Honma watches it from Kamiyama's bedside
Between 2003 - 2008:
- Honma starts to tract the careers of everyone involved in the incident and slowly starts to go insane
- Saejima wins the grand prize award for her story
- The Quiz Show is in planning and is presented to the company president by Yamanobe Kengo
2008:
- Honma enters Galaxy TV
- The Quiz Show begins late night, not live.
- Tazaki is the host, Yamanobe is the MC, Honma serves as AD
- The Quiz Show suddenly is canceled due to the "Yamanobe Incident"
- Honma gets an idea for his revenge from the affair
- Yamanobe, Tazaki, and the company president are fired from Galaxy TV.
- Kamiyama wakes up with severe amnesia
- Honma takes Kamiyama to the aslyum where Yamanobe once kept Tazaki.
- The Quiz Show Golden suddnely goes into pre-production planning
- Saejima transfers departments
- Saejima becomes a Producer, Honma is promoted to Director for the show
- Honma pitches to the higher ups to have Kamiyama as MC and its approved without question
2010:
- The Quiz Show Golden premieres, live, and the highest ratings in station history
- Andou Kousuke is arrested for murder
- Rumors on the internet start talking about the Yamanobe Incident, people start to suspect something of the same to happen again
- Mika debuts as a successful writer
- Neo Arkadia goes under
- Tomobe Koichirou loses his status
- Yamanobe returns
- Saejima is fired
- Shibata becomes a pilot again
- Saejima challenges the Quiz Show and gets her position back at Galaxy TV
- Nitobe Aviation goes under
- Honma pulls strings and takes control over the show, challeging Kamiyama
- Its revealed on live national tv that Kamiyama killed Misaki.
- Honma makes Kamiyama atone for his sins on the last episode
- Kamiyama challenges Honma on the show and its revealed that Honma suffered from Episodic Memory and he killed Misaki
