So being the smart old bean that I am I took a trip to the American Embassy with some diet coke and mentos. Upon the steps of the embassy I "lit" off my "display". What exactly does mentos and diet coke do? And if you tell me anything short of bursting into flame, I will cry.

Simply? The mentos and diet coke react to cause a large amount of fizz at a very fast rate. So it shoot coke into the air about 10 feet.

Scientifically?

Two theories.

1. Mentos have a ton of gum arabic in it which has been said to lower surface tension a lot. Quickly. Meaning the infused CO2 will be released at a high rate. Causing the fizz.

2. Nucleation. Nucleation is the forming of bubble in cracks and ridges on the mentos. Mentos are full of these things, so bubles can be made at an extremely fast rate.
