new (old) car?

Here's the deal, we have been offered my father-in-law's old car, a 16 year old mazda with relatively low milage. ( He walks to work.) We don't need a car, my residence has been carefully chosen to make a car unnecessary, and we are not moving out woop-woop (eg Templestowe) in the near or distant future. We would only use it for weekends ( Read more... )

An hours long walk?! did you fail to mention Wombie's walking / dawdling pace?

As for the car... I don't think you need one. I am here if you ever want to borrow the car on the weekends (I only use mine for work) and the less on the road the better I say.

Car lead to poverty, road rage, laziness and fines. Then you have to join a gym to work out all the aggression from owning a car. The freedom to just take off when you want on the weekends is great, not having to miss the train that only goes twice a day (grrr)... but hiring or borrowing the occasional car is by far the cheaper option.

Yes, it is really 30-40 minutes for someone with a 6 year old dog... but it did sound impressive.

Thanks for the weekend car offer. We have been away before (Ballarrat, Souverign Hill, the Grampians, St Claire) and have managed with the train. Like living in the city, it just takes a bit more ogranisation and research on transport options.

Yes, you are right about the problems with a car. Speaking of the gym, I am off today to start my personal training at the Melbourne City Baths.
towel (check) -they provide it
water bottle (check)
doctor's letter (check)
heart monitor (check)
gym clothes that fit (check) -got some with my summer clothing shopping spree

Should be good! I'll keep you posted.

While I was umming and arring, my brother-in-law has claimed the car. Problem solved. (I don't think we would have taken it anyway.)
