Why doesn't the list include a wool army blanket? If someone were to get stranded in a car in very cold weather, they could freeze to death. Also, wool is a good material in the event of a fire, because it won't catch on fire easily.
I know this because I was in a costuming class, and we had to burn fabrics in order to identify their properties. Wool is the most flame resistant natural fabric. That's why early fire fighters of the mid-19th century had wool uniforms. It warded off both the flames and the cold winter air. I believe it is also water repellent.
FYI, Nylon, is one of of the worst fabrics in a fire... it burns up like a mofo, and literally melts into liquid.
My grandfather kept a lead pipe in an umbrella case for protection. And it wouldn't hurt to have a supply of bottled water, either.
