I think the temptation is always to say, "well, it's not fair that I got eliminated, it must have been due to factors beyond my control that are unfair" and not "I had a bad week, so I got eliminated".
To be totally clear: I understand the desire to say, "it's not my fault", and especially toward the end, where one bad week can make or break you, it can feel extremely unfair that you get knocked out -- but that's how it goes sometimes. I know that the piece I got knocked out on was one that I wasn't especially proud of, but I still had thoughts of, "if only I was comfortable asking my friends to vote for me" -- even as I knew that it would likely not have made much of a difference at all :)
It's human nature. Not much to be done about it.
Never got the feeling that off-lj votes changed much, though, so thanks for clarifying, Gary.
I do worry about non-LJ votes (though mainly I'm thinking about Facebook/Instagram/etc. there-- Dreamwidth always seems like part of the LJ bubble to me).
I know the percentage may seem low, but looking at a week with 20 FB votes where there were only 96 total votes (and 11 of the votes went to one contestant)... that seems like quite a skew to me. A fifth of the votes is a lot, and expecially near the end here, we've had weeks where many people aren't getting much more than about 11 votes total.
Not to mention the unholy number of writeoffs, especially those involving more than two people!
12-20% of the votes coming from 'outside' seems like a lot to me. And yet, I know that part of the problem is that LJ polls allow that. The choices are everyone or community-only, which is frustratingingly limited.
It's an imperfect situation, and I know you weigh the pros and cons of it constantly...
