“Ohchan, why are you so tired?” Aiba asked innocently with a mouth full of cake. Sho glanced at him as he secretly kicked his leg under the table. Aiba squirmed.
Ohno didn’t answer. He didn’t know how to answer either. It was Christmas day, with many presents and candles and wishes for each other, but still the void inside Ohno’s heart gradually grew bigger with each minute passed. Nino hadn’t showed up yet - and just thinking about Nino and that guy, who might accept his feelings already, being together happily made Ohno’s heart sunk into his stomach helplessly. He wondered why he kept feeling this way, why he wasn’t used to this already? Didn’t he accept it already? The love he tried so hard each day to erase out of his mind refused to leave him. It had been ten years already, ten years of waiting and hoping and just giving up, but as if it had rooted inside his heart, each day passed he found himself deeply in love with Nino, and he knew that his love was unbreakable.
When he was spacing out, only half-hearing what his friends were talking about, his cell phone rang. He didn’t want to pick up - he wasn’t in a mood for a Merry Christmas right now, all he wanted now was to go back home and to lie on his bed and sleep, and maybe Nino would show up…
However, he tugged out his cell phone and when he saw the name of the caller, he froze. Jun noticed the blank look on Ohno’s face as he took a glance at the screen and patted his shoulder encouragingly.
It was Nino.
Nino was going to cancel the meeting with them, Ohno thought bitterly as he felt his stomach squirm uncomfortably. So it’d be the end of this year’s Christmas. Nino might have confessed to that person already, and maybe, he had accepted his feelings and now they were going to have a nice night together… Trying his best to not think to much about it, Ohno picked up the phone. He breathed.
“Moshi mosh…?”
“What are you doing??!” Nino’s voice was a little annoyed “Why didn’t you just pick it up earlier??”
“I’m sorry, I…” Ohno looked around, the rest of Arashi was looking at him, silence suddenly grew around them “It’s… noisy here. I didn’t hear the phone call.”
“Okay,” Nino sighed as he continued “Ohchan… Do you have any free time? Can you come over to my house?”
“Huh? But…” Ohno looked at his watch and frowned “But it’s nearly midnight already! Did you finish your… er… work?”
“Not yet,” Nino said, it was weird that Nino sounded nervous “I need some help here… Please, Ohchan?”
“Er… How could I help you?” Ohno frowned in confusion.
“Please, just come okay… Don’t ask. I’ll tell you when you’re here.” Nino insisted.
“Oh…okay,” Ohno finally gave up “I’ll go there then.”
“Thank you, Ohchan,” Nino said in relief, and he added with a sing-song tone “Tell the others I love them, Merry Christmas.”
And before Ohno could say anything more, he hung up the phone. Ohno looked at his phone in perplex.
“He said Merry Christmas,” Ohno mumbled.
“And?” Sho raised an eyebrow.
“And he loves all of you.” Ohno bit his lips slightly.
“So?” Jun took a sip from his beer “He won’t show up tonight?”
“I don’t know…” Ohno frowned “But… he asked me to go help him…”
“What?” Jun put down his glass and stared at Ohno in disbelief “What is he thinking, asking you that? He knows that you love him and now he asked you to help him to confess to someone you barely know?? What a cold-heart guy!”
“Jun…” Ohno smiled softly at Jun, a little grateful with the other’s concern “I told him I’m over him already… So it’s really okay. He won’t ask me if he doesn’t really need my help.”
“You’re too kind, Ohchan,” Aiba sighed “Telling him that despite the fact that you still love him?”
“I can’t believe he doesn’t know it. Everyone can see it!” Jun muttered angrily.
“It’s okay, Jun, I’ll go.” Ohno said and stood up.
“Tell us if he hurts you,” Sho smiled at Ohno “We’ll teach him a lesson later.”
Ohno smiled, though the hurt can be seen deep inside his brown eyes. He nodded and turned around, still feeling the worried gazes of his friends on his back as he walked outside the cozy shop.
----------------------------------
He stood in front of Nino’s apartment, the cold had found its way into his body, as he tightened the coat around him and he shivered involuntarily. He was going to freeze if Nino didn’t open the door sooner. However, despite his worry, Nino opened it nearly immediately when Ohno rang the door bell. This made Ohno’s heart warmer as he thought might be Nino was waiting for him.
“Ohchan!” Nino said cheerfully as he pulled Ohno inside the warm house, his hands took both Ohno’s and rubbed it slightly, tried to warm the cold hands inside his. Ohno’s heart fluttered, and the idea of coming here when it was snowing wasn’t so bad anymore. “Sorry, did I bother you? I should come to meet you instead…”
“No, it’s really okay,” Ohno said honestly, a smile appeared on his face. Nino looked at him worriedly, his hands left Ohno’s and came to his face as he cupped Ohno’s face between his palms. Ohno had never known that Nino’s hands were so warm and comfortable like this, and he closed his eyes to enjoy this rare moment. His heart couldn’t stay calm inside his chest, because Nino was close, so close to him, as he wanted to reach out his hand and hug the other man tightly and never let him go…
But instead, he just smiled at Nino.
“How can I help you?”
The floor was messy with crumpled paper scattered around, in the trash can, on the floor, and on the bed. Nino’s guitar was laying near a sheet of paper, and as Ohno took a look, he knew Nino was composing. He frowned in confusion, how could he help him if Nino was really composing? He had never good with words, let alone putting them into melody and song. He could use his body and his voice to express song, but creating them? He had never thought about it. Wasn’t Sho a better choice if Nino wanted someone to help with this…?
“Sorry, it’s a little messy,” Nino’s voice dragged him out of his thoughts. Nino collected some paper and threw it onto the trash carelessly “I should clean it up before you came, but it’s late already…”
“I don’t mind,” Ohno said sheepishly as he sat down on the sofa. “How can I help you, Nino?”
“I… well…”
There was a strange silence around them, and when Ohno noticed it, he felt Nino suddenly tense beside him. The other man put his hand on his waist, a little uneasy as his eyes trailed from the guitar, to the paper and to Ohno, then he looked away quickly when he saw Ohno was staring at him. Ohno arched an eyebrow. Was it so hard to talk about?
“Ohchan, what do you want for your Christmas?” Nino suddenly asked. Ohno didn’t expect this question, so he widened his eyes at Nino, who was still looking at him insistently.
“Er…? If… if you want to make it up for making me come here, I really don’t mind…”
“No, it’s not that. I just… wonder.” Nino blushed and shifted uncomfortably at his seat.
But Ohno absolutely couldn’t say that the only present he wanted for his whole life was him. He loved all about Nino, and he wished he could have Nino for himself, which he knew never came true. He had forgotten how to wish to Santa Claus for Christmas’s present, because he didn’t want anything else. He smiled miserably.
“Well, nothing in particular.”
“Really?” Nino bit his lip. Ohno’s heart missed a beat inside his chest.
“… Yeah. Don’t worry about it,” Ohno said weakly “Why don’t you just tell me what should I do to help you, and we could finish it sooner and, then, you could…” Ohno’s throat went dry “… go to that person and confess?”
“Well, I think so too…” Nino smiled nervously as he stood up and came to his guitar “I want you to hear this, Ohchan.”
Ohno blinked. He didn’t really understand what that meant, but before he could ask, Nino had started.
That was a love song. The melody was sweet, soft and charming. Ohno closed his eyes, listened to the lyric which somehow made his heart tightened. Knowing that those words weren’t about him…
Nino’s voice was so warm, and irresistible. Ohno found his heart melted when Nino whispered in the melody “Suki da yo”. He was mesmerized by the song, he could feel the atmosphere filled with Nino’s love. He thought miserably, who was the lucky one in this song? Who was the lucky one have this song to himself? And had Nino sing this to him… Ohno just couldn’t imagine who he was. He wanted to be that person desperately…
The song ended just softly as when it started. Ohno opened his eyes to look at a worried Nino in front of him as Nino was waiting for his comment. Ohno found his voice murmur.
“It’s… sweet,” Ohno’s eyes suddenly watered. The hurt it brought was more unbearable. He tried to cover it with a smile “… really sweet, Nino.”
“Really?” Nino sighed in relief when hearing it “I’m so glad, Ohchan.”
“Well… the one whom you present it to…” Ohno’s tear started to fall down, and he needed to lower his head to hide it. It was hard, because Nino was staring at him “… is really, really lucky, ne…”
“Ohchan,” Nino put down his guitar and stood up, came closer to Ohno and kneed right in front of him. He surely saw Ohno’s tear as he
stretched his hand to wipe it away gently “… It’s for you. Merry Christmas.”
As if there was an electric pierced through Ohno’s body, he lifted his head to look at Nino in shock and confusion. He couldn’t answer anything until he felt Nino’s lips came to his. A sudden warmth spread inside his body, and he closed his eyes, still didn’t wholly believe this was real. Nino was tense at first, but it quickly became a sweet kiss when Ohno’s hand came to the back of his head, pulling him closer. Ohno kissed him back, more demanding, and he tried to remember all the sweetness, with Nino right here, in his arms, kissing him… It surely was a dream, Ohno thought, and when he opened his eyes, Nino would go away. This dream was too real, and too precious to end. If he couldn’t have Nino to himself, this dream was just enough for him…
They finally parted and Ohno opened his eyes while worrying that Nino would disappeared as he always did in his dreams. But he still saw Nino sitting right in front of him, smiling at him, his face blushed and his eyes sparkling with happiness. Nino had never been so beautiful, Ohno chuckled.
“It just…” Nino smiled nervously “… I don’t know if you still… but… I love you, Ohchan.”
“What?” Ohno breathed.
“I love you,” Nino leaned in and their nose touched slightly “I’m sorry, I just couldn’t tell you that. I rejected you once, right?” Ohno blinked. The memory was still there. But it was different this time… “But I found out that I was in love with you… so much. I just… couldn’t understand myself, and…”
“But… just… wait a minute!” Ohno cut him off in confusion “So that song is… for me?”
“Yes.” Nino smiled.
“But… you called me to help you…” Ohno blinked.
“I want to make a surprise.”
“So it really …is…?”
“Yes,” Nino hold Ohno’s hands, press them against his cheeks “It’s your song.”
Ohno beamed in happiness when his tear still continued rolled down on his cheeks. He hugged Nino tightly, couldn’t breath as his throat tightened with so many unnamed feelings. He forgot all about the sadness, the disappointment he had experienced throughout his days; right now, right here, it just was Nino, in his arms, and was gently hugging him back. He could feel Nino sighed in relief, as he buried his face to Nino’s chest, melted into Nino’s sweet smell and his warmth surrounding him. Nino chuckled.
“Why are you crying?”
“Nino…!” Ohno cried “I love you!”
“Thank you, Ohchan,” Nino squeezed his embrace “Thank you for still loving me, for such a long time…”
“I could never really be over you” Ohno smiled “I… lied to you…”
“I know,” Nino rubbed Ohno’s back gently “You nearly broke my heart… When you said that, on the terrace, remember?”
“So you was too busy with… composing this song so you didn’t come to the party? And the days before that?”
“Yes. I was worried I couldn’t finish it on time. It’s hard, thinking how to confess to you,” Nino chuckled “I must put away all my new games and my new tricks of magic, to concentrate on this, you know.”
“Thank you… “ Ohno refused to leave Nino’s arms as he put his head on Nino’s shoulder and smiled sheepishly “I want to hear it again…”
“You do?” Nino asked softly.
“Yes. I was listening to it when thinking you actually would present it to someone else…” Ohno pouted “It hurt me.”
“You idiot,” Nino patted Ohno’s head slightly, but he couldn’t help but grinning at Ohno “I couldn’t really understand why you think that’s Ryo, seriously!”
“You spend a lot of time with him... more than me…”
“I’m not,” Nino rolled his eyes “We worked together on a drama, so how could I not go out with him?”
“But…” Ohno pouted again “… well, I was hurt…”
“You’re a jealous guy!” Nino laughed “Come on, I’ll sing it for you again. But not now, okay?”
“Why?” Ohno looked at Nino, a frown appeared on his face.
Nino didn’t answer, he leaned in and put a slight kiss on Ohno’s lips.
“I won’t let you wait anymore, Ohchan.”
And Ohno knew this was time his wish coming true. Not in his dream, not in his wish, but the real Nino was right in front of him, was looking at him with the most alluring eyes, and now was hugging him tightly. They both smiled happily.
Outside, the snowflakes were still falling from the sky. But this time, it didn’t bring coldness anymore, but happiness for them instead…
--------------------------------------------------
“What do you think they are doing now?” Sho said with his ear pressing against the front door.
“I don’t want to think about that!” Jun grimaced “But it sounds like everything is okay now.”
“Nino confessed!!” Aiba said amusingly “That song definitely is about Ohchan, right?”
“Well, I guess so too…” Sho thought aloud.
“But Ohchan hasn’t come out yet! They must be together now!” Aiba pressed his ear to the door “Wait, I can't hear anything!”
“Stop that, guys!” Jun grunted “Let’s go, we just were too worried about them!”
Aiba and Sho giggled all the way back. Finally, Santa Claus had given Ohno the wish he always wanted for years, and it was the best miracle of this Christmas, they thought happily.
