Chapter 2
The door slided open when Ohno finished his lunch. He raised his head, expecting it to be Sho coming to check on his ongoing work, but his eyes spotted Jun as the younger boy waved his hand cheerfully at him. Ohno smiled and gestured Jun in while closing the box and putting it aside his seat. Jun stepped into the room. He looked around and seemed impressed with Ohno’s work. A shorter boy stood behind Jun and from his spot Ohno couldn’t see his face, but it was not Sho or Aiba. He arched an eyebrow questioningly.
“Ohno-san, someone is looking for you.” Jun said and stepped beside to let the other student in. Just then Ohno had a clearer view of his face: a newcomer, since he had never seen this boy around. The boy looked rather shy, but he didn’t look away when his eyes held Ohno’s. Ohno swallowed a sudden lump inside his throat as he felt an unexpected electric current running all over his body.
“Ninomiya, this is Ohno-san. Ohno-san, Ninomiya-kun.” Jun introduced them politely. Ohno broke their eyes contact as he took a look at his face. The way his lips curved up into a mischievous smile, the way he frowned slightly when seeing Ohno’s lack of reaction, and the way he looked at Ohno, silently expecting him to say something - all of them were somehow familiar. Ohno suddenly found himself at a loss for words; his greeting just couldn’t come out of his slightly opened mouth.
“Ohno-san?” The boy called softly and extended his hand to Ohno, a honest smile spreaded across his face as those delightful eyes once again held Ohno’s. “Nice to meet you.”
“N-nice to meet you,” Ohno stammered, his hand holding Ninomiya’s for a split second before he drew back, his skin burning at the brief contact. He smiled to cover his embarrassment, though he knew there was apparently nothing for him to feel embarrassed about.
“I need to go.” Jun looked at his watch and sighed. “Or Sho’ll definitely kill Aiba for being too troublesome. The fifth explosion of the week, oh God…”
“Tell Sho I wish him ‘good luck’” Ohno grinned at Jun. With an understanding nod Jun turned around and disappeared into the crowd of students busying with their own activities, leaving Ohno alone in the room with the new student.
It was not exactly uncomfortable when silence filled the room, but Ohno couldn’t keep his eyes still as they roamed around the room and stopped at anything but Ninomiya. From the corner of his eyes he could see Ninomiya studying him quietly, his arms folded in front of his chest. Ohno rubbed his nape nervously, and tried to think of something to help himself out of the silence which was slowly turning awkward.
“So… why do you want to meet me?” He asked.
Ninomiya didn’t answer right away. His lack of reply made Ohno look at him with uncertainty, and at the moment their eyes met, Ohno thinks he saw the change in those eyes. As if Ninomiya could read his mind, as if Ninomiya could see something inside him that even Ohno himself didn’t know, as if Ninomiya knew exactly what he was thinking and how he was feeling - the look Ninomiya gave him somehow strange, somehow familiar, somehow so sweet that it became unbearable. Ohno looked away, he didn’t want to look at them anymore - as though if he did, there was something that was sleeping deep inside his heart would revive and he wouldn’t be able to control it. Though Ohno has no idea why the feeling came in the first place.
“I want to play the guitar.” Ninomiya answered simply, and when Ohno stole a look at him, Ninomiya’s look had returned to normal again. Ohno started to wonder if he had just imagined everything.
“You should tell Sho about that,” Ohno offered “I am only responsible for the stage decoration and…”
“I want to help decorate the stage which I’m going to perform on.” Ninomiya said with determination.
“Do you know anything about art?” Ohno asked incredulously. He had never thought someone would want to help with the decoration. The responsibility was heavy. Sho demanded it to be perfect and Ohno didn’t think Sho would agree to let this boy take the work.
“I can’t make them,” Ninomiya answered honestly. “But I have good ideas.”
“I think I have my own ideas as to how to decorate…” Ohno felt slight discontentment squirming inside his stomach, “so you really don’t have to…”
“Please,” Ninomiya cut him off, his voice becoming so quiet as he took a step closer to Ohno, and Ohno instinctively stepped backward. Ninomiya’s eyes turned sad, and at that moment Ohno couldn’t look away. “It’s important to me.” Ninomiya insisted.
Ohno bite his lips. Sho would be angry with him, he could see that clearly and he knew that he should ask Sho first. But the look Ninomiya was giving him was enough for him to not be able to say no to the boy.
“Okay,” he gave in after a minute of thought. Nino had been staring at him with puppy-dog sad eyes. “Okay. Give me your ideas then. But only for your performance. I will take care of the rest.”
Ninomiya beamed genuinely as he bowed and left the room, not noticing the quiet look on the older boy following him until Ninomiya’s back disappears behind the door. Ohno held his left chest by his hand, wondering what that meant when suddenly a hot sensation appeared and spreaded all over his skin. As if there was something wanting to burst out when Ninomiya stood so close to him, and now his heart was beating furiously as he could feel his own smile on his face, despite the confusion which had totally taken control of his mind.
------------------------------------------------
The next day, Ohno came to school earlier than usual. He wanted to take a chance to look through the whole place which the other events would be held so that he would have ideas on how to decorate. He threw his bag carelessly into his locker, slammed the door shut and turned around. His eyes caught a glimpse of a boy fumbling about his locker - which happened to be opposite his. Ninomiya. Ohno’s heart started to thump strangely again. The way his brows crinkled when he was concentrating was somehow attractive, and the way his thin lips tightened into a line when he was worried was somehow lovely. Ohno didn’t know that he was staring at the other boy until Nino raised his head and looked straight at him through the mirror on the wall.
“I forget my pen case,” Ninomiya said casually, and he turned around to face Ohno with a sigh. “I must’ve left it on my bed.”
“You… you can have my pen,” Ohno offered, surprising even himself by the way his voice seemed so weak “I still have another one.”
“Thank you.” Ninomiya grinned and Ohno automatically grinned back, feeling his heart flutter in a strangely welcoming way. He took out his pen and gave it to Ninomiya, who took it thankfully.
“Where is your class? I will return it to you when school ends.” Ninomiya asked, a hint of smile flashed in his deep brown eyes.
“You can bring it to the Art room, I’ll be there.” Ohno answered, and with a small nod Ninomiya left, and Ohno looked at his small back until he turned at the corner of the lobby and disappeared.
The rest of the day the only image remaining in Ohno’s mind is Ninomiya’s small smile - the smile that Ohno felt strangely lovely. He had never known Ninomiya before, but it felt like there was an invisible and indescribable bond between them, that only him and Ninomiya could sense. It hung in the air around them when they looked into each other eyes, it passed an electric current through Ohno’s body when Ninomiya smiled, and it sent a latent happiness under his skin when Ohno thought about him. The feeling was all new to Ohno, but he liked it.
----------------------------
“You are late,” Jun winced. Jun always winces, Satoshi noticed. His thick eyebrows always ceased into a frown whenever Satoshi came late for the classes. Jun was Satoshi’s preceptor, who taught him many things about how to become a good prince. And his classes weren’t interesting at all, in Satoshi’s view point. The only class that Satoshi loved was art. He had stayed in his room for hours just to paint something with his little hand and imagination, and his pictures were always welcomed by the others, even \his parents. The only time when Satoshi enjoyed himself was when he was immersed into the world of imagination and dreams. However, that was replaced by the time when Satoshi could hide himself in the secret garden with Kazunari, spending time to talk and laugh and be happy together.
“I know,” Satoshi sighed. “I’ve just returned from my visit to Kazunari’s.”
“You keep talking about that,” Jun shook his head. “Satoshi, your imagination is really great.”
“It’s not an imagination,” Satoshi muttered under his breath. “He is not an imagination.”
“Okay, so today we should return to the lesson…”
And when Jun kept talking non-stop about the most important roles of what culture means to a kingdom, Satoshi yawned and his mind wandered around, came to Kazu and his sweet smile that always there for him. But always behind those eyes were sadness - Satoshi had never failed to notice it. It felt like Kazunari always had something bothering him so much and he didn’t share it with Satoshi. It was mostly Satoshi who talked about himself when they were together, Kazunari was always listening to him with a gentle smile on his face. Sometimes when Satoshi thought about this, he made sure to himself that he would ask Kazunari later - about him, his parents (did he even have parents?), his life, his world… everything that was about Kazunari, Satoshi wanted to know. He wanted to know what had made Kazunari Kazunari, what had brought him here to be the spirit of this garden, had he ever met other spirits, too? With Satoshi, Kazunari was always a mystery that he wanted to discover.
