Chapter 3

“Ohno-san?” A voice dragged Ohno out of his daydream. He had gotten lost in his thoughts again - it was like a habit whenever he was not focused on his other tasks.

He raised his head and realized that class had ended quite a while ago. He had been sitting here and spacing out, and he didn’t notice the others leaving. Now when he came back to his senses, he was the only person left in this classroom, with the slightly opened door and Ninomiya was looking at him hesitantly.

“Ninomiya-kun,” Ohno smiled when he saw the other boy, his hand holding Ohno’s pen and he looked rather shy. Ohno asked in surprise “How do you know I’m here?”

“Aiba-chan told me your classroom…” Ninomiya smiled softly as he stepped inside, sliding the door close behind him. Ohno had no idea why he was conscious of the fact that there were only him and Ninomiya alone in the room, and the way Ninomiya looked at him made him feel more nervous. He didn’t know what to do with his hands, so he started to collect his stuff in order to find something else to do rather than feeling the heat on his face raising up.

“Thank you for this,” Ninomiya put the pen on the table. His voice was not more than a whisper, and Ohno couldn’t help but thought why the other boy always acted so catiously in front of him - as though there was a line between them that Ninomiya didn’t dare to cross. Though his eyes always expressed the opposite; whenever their eyes met Ohno always felt a strange wave of familiarity washing over him, just like the first time when Ninomiya stared at him in the Art room.

“Oh…” Ohno looked away from Ninomiya’s gaze, somehow feeling like his mind was in a daze “It’s nothing…”

Ninomiya was still standing beside Ohno’s table when silence fell between them. Ohno hastily gathered his stuff and stuffed them into his bag carelessly. Ninomiya still looked intently at him and Ohno couldn’t ignore the thumping in his chest when he dropped his book on the floor. It was Ninomiya who bent down and took it then handled it back to him.

“Your art is great,” Ninomiya commented with a smile when Ohno took his book, and his eyes sparkled mischievously when he saw Ohno’s reddening ears. “I saw your work at the exhibition. They are amazing.”

“Thank… thank you,” Ohno stammered shyly, and he couldn’t help but beamed gleefully at Ninomiya.

And then it suddenly happened to Ohno. Ninomiya’s eyes caught his, an unreadable look appeared on Ninomiya’s face as he took a step closer to him. Ohno’s breathing stopped at that very moment. Ninomiya’s stare held him and he couldn’t move an inch, his heart nearly jumped out of his chest. As if he was trying to tell him something, Ohno found his eyes were sad, so sad that it brought a wave of agitation to Ohno’s mind.

Ninomiya reached out his hand and was about to touch Ohno’s face when he suddenly stopped.

“I want to discuss about the stage,” Ninomiya smiled and drew back his hand. Ohno blinked, and came back to his sense as Ninomiya backed away, his mysterious smile once again plastered on his face. Ohno could only nod dumbly.

“Okay, we… we can go to the Art room and…”

“I’ll just give you my ideas,” Ninomiya reminded him as he turned back and winked at Ohno. Ohno couldn’t take his eyes off the boy, the way he smiled and the way he talked, all was so new, but also so familiar. The thought Ninomiya was flirting with him found its way to his mind and immediately be wiped away violently before he could act any more strangely in front of the boy. How could he even think about it?

“We can discuss here,” Ninomiya continued, choosing not to notice Ohno’s troubled face. He sat down in front of Ohno, and tugged at his sleeves slightly to make the older boy sit down as well. Ohno hesitated for a second before sitting down and set his bag near his feet.

“Okay,” Ohno swallowed hard, to clear all the thoughts that had occupied his mind so he would be able to think of something else other than Ninomiya. “So, er… what’s your idea?”

“I want a lake,” Ninomiya said as he gestured to describe his imagination, “a small lake, with grass and stones around its shore. And a tree… You know the great and old kind? … It will be here.” Ninomiya pointed at an imaginary point on the table. “And an antique well under the tree. That’s it.”

“Why a lake?” Ohno asked curiously as he wrote down the details.

“It’s a secret,” Ninomiya winked. “And it’d be great if you can decorate the ground too… the one with weeds under your feet, and rocks scattered around.”

“Hm… I still don’t know how it looks like…” Ohno hesitated. Ninomiya just smiled encouragingly at him as he took the pencil and drew some lines on the white paper.

“Use your imagination, Ohno-san. You have a good one.”

“Okay,” Ohno sighed and finished his note. “Any other details?”

“I think it’s enough… You have a picture of it in your mind?” Ninomiya gave Ohno the paper, and Ohno could get vaguely the feeling of how the boy wanted it to be.

“Not yet,” Ohno admitted with a shrug. “I should spend time to imagine it in my head.” He smiled and added, “you sure know how the place looks like.”

“Of course,” Ninomiya smiled “It’s my place.”

“What do you mean?” Curiosity grew inside Ohno as he subconsciously leaned forward. “Your place? You mean like your hometown?”

“You can say it like that,” Ninomiya chuckled and then stood up. “Okay, thank you so much, Ohno-san…”

“You know, Ninomiya-kun,” Ohno smiled softly as he placed the note carefully into his pocket. “You don’t need to be so formal.”

“Then Ohchan,” Nino immediately decided and laughed gleefully. “You too, should stop calling me Ninomiya.”

“What should I call you then?” Ohno raised his eyebrows. He had just remembered that he didn’t know Ninomiya’s given name. “What’s your name?”

“Kazunari,” Ninomiya replied with a smirk, and at that moment, Ohno felt like he had just been shot.

-----------------------------------------------

“Satoshi,” Kazunari scolded slightly when he saw the little prince from afar, running toward him with a big grin on his face. “Satoshi, you can’t come here today. You have class with Masaki-sensei!”

“I don’t care,” Satoshi pouted as he approached Kazunari. He tugged at Kazunari’s sleeve insistently. “I want to play with you.”

“As much as I want you to stay, you have to go back,” Kazunari fold his arms in front of his chest and shook his head in disapproval. “You are the prince of this kingdom, you should remember that!”

“Of course I remember! But I want Kazu to be with me even though I’m a prince…”

“I’m always with you,” Kazunari’s voice softened. As though all his energy was drained out, he sighed,  “you need to be a great prince, Satoshi… This kingdom needs you.”

“But… if I’m a great prince, then I must have a wife…” Satoshi said quietly and sadly. “I don’t want to.”

Sadness took over Kazunari as he sat down on the ground and brought his knees to his chest. At that moment, Kazunari looked so small, so defeated, and so fragile that Satoshi didn’t want anything else but to hold Kazunari for the rest of his life, to protect him from any misery. He hugged Kazunari from behind, his arms wrapped around Kazunari’s waist and he pulled the other boy closer until Kazunari leaned back to his chest.

“You know your responsibilities, Satoshi.” Kazunari whispered.

“But I want to marry you,” Satoshi whispered against Kazunari’s ear. “I want Kazu to be my wife.”

“No way I’m the wife,” Kazunari teased slightly, but then he shook his head bitterly. “You know we can’t.”

“That’s why I don’t want to be a prince, Kazu.” Satoshi mumbled into Kazunari’s shoulder, squeezing his embrace as he felt a flow of sadness rush into his heart. “I want to be with you.”

Only silence answered Satoshi. They both stayed quiet until it was sunset. Kazunari forgot to tell Satoshi to return to the castle, and Satoshi didn’t care about Masaki-sensei’s class anymore. They simply stayed there in order to feel each other’s warmth, to feel each other’s presence.

They could never be together, they both knew that clearly.
