Chapter 8

Ohno woke up with tears on his cheeks. It was so sad, his dream this time round. It made his heart constrict as though he was the one who had experienced it. It was the saddest ending he could ever think of for his story - the story he had always written inside his mind since he was a child. He didn’t want it to end like that, with Kazunari’s death and Satoshi’s broken heart… He loved Kazunari - or more like, Satoshi loved Kazunari so much that it was unbearable for him to bear with his death. It was heart-wrenching. It felt like something inside him had died together with Kazunari, and Ohno couldn’t bear the pain. He wiped at his tears with his palm quietly, the scene vaguely replayed over and over again in his mind again, and all he could recall was the agony of the little prince and the crackling laughter of the scornful fire.

It was the worst nightmare ever.

Unable to stand the loneliness suffocating him any longer, Ohno reached for his phone - which had been thrown carelessly near his pillow, his fingers automatically typed a familiar string of numbers without thinking.

“Moshi moshi?” Nino’s voice appeared at the other end of the line. Ohno pressed his phone against his ear, letting the other boy’s voice warm his body while his tears still ran down his cheeks uncontrollably.

“Ohchan? What’s wrong?” Nino asked worriedly when he heard Ohno’s quiet sobs, but Ohno couldn’t bring himself to say anything as something had obstructed his throat completely. He just cried quietly, while listening to Nino’s even breathing at the other end. He needed to feel Nino’s presence. He needed to feel Nino now.

Nino called again since he didn’t hear Ohno say anything, his voice slightly confused. “Ohchan?”

“Nino…” Ohno mumbled hoarsely. The feeling of losing the most important person in his life took control of his mind, leaving behind a black hole in his heart. To be honest, it felt like he had just lost Nino. “Nino…”

“I’m here.” Nino replied, his voice was soft and comforting. “Where are you now? You just got up?”

“Yeah…” Ohno sniffed. Hearing Nino’s voice calmed him down a little bit, but he was still at a loss for words so a comfortable silence settled between them.

“Would you like to go to school together?” Nino asked after a while. There was a hint of a smile in Nino’s voice that made Ohno’s heart brightened slightly, though his brain still hadn’t functioned properly.

“Huh?” Ohno blinked in confusion. “What…?”

“The festival today… do you still remember?” Nino chuckled. “Don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten about it.”

“Ah…” Ohno realized, his cheeks reddened as he started to feel slightly shy for waking the other boy up too early in the morning and creating a hoo-ha over his nightmare. “Sorry…I forgot.”

“You’re hopeless,” Nino teased slightly. “I’ll be there in ten minutes. Get out of bed okay?”

“Okay…” Ohno smiled and sat up on his bed. When Nino hung up, he felt a little better, but the feelings were still so strong that he couldn’t wipe it away completely.

It had never felt so real like this.

Nino came when Ohno was struggling to put on his socks. Just when he heard the bell ringing, he rushed to open the door, revealing a smiling Nino standing with his hand extended to hold Ohno’s. But Ohno didn’t take Nino’s hand; instead he ran towards Nino and pulled him into a tight embrace.

“Ohchan,” Nino laughed when Ohno tightened his hold around him. “You’re suffocating me!”

“Just let me be like this a little longer…” Ohno murmured, his face buried into the crook of Nino’s neck, searching for the warmth radiating from Nino to reassure himself that Nino was here, he‘s alive.

“What’s wrong?” Nino asked again, his hand rubbing Ohno’s back gently.

“Nightmare…” Ohno mumbled. Somehow, he found this once again familiar, but he couldn’t bring himself to care when Nino’s body was pressed against his in a comfortable way like this.

After a while, when Ohno finally regained his calmness, he pulled away and looked at the boy in front of him. Nino was smiling at him, the smile he suddenly realized that he had been missing for a very long time. He missed Nino’s smile, he missed Nino so much.

--------------------------------------

The festival was enjoyable. The nightmare nearly slipped from Ohno’s mind when he went around with Nino and enjoyed their time together. He had laughed gleefully at Nino when the younger boy appeared to be seriously scared when they were in the haunted-house so that he had held onto Ohno’s arms tightly for his life. Nino pouted at Ohno with his irresistible eyes that made Ohno’s heart flutter helplessly. They bought some candy floss and shared between themselves, while Nino kept laughing at how Ohno looked like an old man with candy floss in his hand. Ohno felt like he was the happiest person in the world.

Time flew by unnoticeably, with their hands linking together and Nino leaning into Ohno occasionally, their shoulder bumping and their laughter never died down. But then Ohno realized that it was nearly time for Nino to leave to prepare for his next performance. At this time, Ohno suddenly remembered something, and he turned towards Nino and asked rather hesitantly.

“Nino, is the person you want to see your performance… here?”

“Yes,” Nino replied softly after a while of silence - his voice was so low that Ohno nearly missed it “Yes, he’s here.”

Ohno bit his lips. Somehow, loneliness was again evident in Nino’s eyes, which weren’t looking at Ohno but somewhere Ohno couldn’t figure. Witnessing that made Ohno’s heart wrenched inside his chest. He never wanted to see Nino like this again, especially when he was beside Nino… couldn’t he be the reason for Nino to be truly happy? He reached out for Nino’s hand, and tried to calm down the furious pulsing through his veins when their hands entwined naturally. He wanted nothing but for Nino to be happy. And he knew he would do anything for Nino to be happy. Nino turned to him, a hint of a smile plastered on his face.

“Ohchan…” He called softly. “Satoshi.”

Ohno stared at Nino. The name buzzing in his mind, awakening something inside him that he didn’t quite understand. But it was familiar. It was strangely familiar when Nino called him ‘Satoshi’ with his gentle voice, and naturally as if it had always been like this. As if they were always like this. Part of his nightmare dissipated, and Ohno felt like the world around him had disappeared. There was only Nino with his insistent eyes, staring at him as if he wanted to say something, as if he wanted Ohno to understand something, to realize something…

“Make sure you come,” Nino told him. Ohno’s thoughts were cut off, and all he could do was to nod dumbly. Nino didn’t need to tell him that, because there was no way he was going to miss it. It was Nino’s performance, after all.

When Nino finally left, his hand leaving Ohno’s, the older boy found it unbearably cold. He stared at Nino’s back until the boy’s frame disappeared into the crowd. He turned away and was once again lost in his thoughts, which were now flowing back uncontrollably.

--------------------------------------------------------

When it was about time for Nino’s performance, Ohno came to the stage area and helped himself a seat near the front. From here he could see his decorations clearly, and the more he looked at it, the more it reminded him of the little garden in his imagination. It was exactly the same. He didn’t know if he had painted Nino’s ideas or his own, because the scene came completely from his heart, from his imagination, and Nino had said that it was what he had wanted it to be. Was there by any chance…?

The performance began before Ohno could complete his thoughts, and he searched left and right for Nino. But as Nino’s performance was the next item, Ohno was sure that Nino was still definitely at the backstage. Ohno’s eyes returned to the main stage, where some students were playing the harmonica and swinging around in a dance that Ohno didn’t quite remember the name.

When Nino’s name was being called, and the younger boy stepped out onto the stage, Ohno was put in a daze as Nino’s face was illuminated by the colorful lighting system. He was so like a mirage that Ohno didn’t dare to blink and even held his breath, worried that if he even moved his eyes, Nino would disappear. Nino had his guitar with him and he came to sit on the side of the lake, his eyes roaming around the audiences and seemed to light up when he caught sight of Ohno. He took a deep breath, and Ohno could see that he was nervous. But then, Nino started to sing. As his warm voice slowly echoed around the whole place, the noises immediately stopped and everyone turned towards the stage.

The melody was strangely familiar… Nino’s voice was strangely familiar…

Even though all my memory disappears...
When I’m reborn, I’ll search for you again…

It was like a whisper, it was also like a plea. Nino’s voice was gentle, as he put all his heart into strumming and singing, like the world around him had disappeared, and that there was only him with his guitar left, struggling with his own sadness.

Nino’s voice slowly rose in volume at the chorus, and suddenly it rang a bell through Ohno’s mind. At that moment, his heart stopped beating.

It was Kazunari’s last farewell song that he had just heard the night before in his dream.

The melody which was full of hurt and pain and regret, the song that was for only him, the song Kazunari had been singing before death tore them apart.

It was Satoshi’s song.

Ohno’s tears fell down without him realizing. Nino on the stage was so beautiful that it was heart-breaking, his brows ceased as if he was bearing the same sadness, the same loss as Ohno. As Ohno held his breath and felt the overwhelming feeling washed over him like flowing water breaking through a dam, he heard Nino’s voice wavered. Nino was also crying.

The memories flowed back freely to Ohno’s mind and made everything clearer than ever. He could almost smell the scent of the familiar moist air around them, could almost sense the light of the rims of sunlight, and could almost feel the touch of the wind on his skin. He could almost picture the scene, could almost feel the warmth radiating from the boy in front of him, could almost see Kazunari’s eyes looking deeply into his, and could almost feel their sadness reaching out for each other from their eye contact. He could almost taste the salt of his tears, could almost feel the burning inside his stomach, the hurt scratching at his heart, the pain tingling all over his body. He could feel the story which was once again playing in his mind, reminding him of that part of his soul that he had forgot, the past in which they had been together, the memories that they had made.

It was as if Ohno could finally take his first breath after years of being suffocated. As if Ohno could finally see after years of being blind.

Ohno didn’t know how long it had been; maybe it had been centuries already. But miraculously, the connection between them never died. Their love had never died. The song recalled the sound of the fire, the despair of their separation that only they could feel inside their hearts. Ohno’s heart once again broke inside his tightened chest, as his mind couldn’t stop screaming his name. Kazunari.

It was the song of farewell, of promise, of separation.

But it was also the song of hope.

It ended with applause resounding thunderously around them, but Ohno could hear nothing. Now and here, there was only Nino and him, and Nino was there, staring at him, waiting, longing, insisting, just the same as the first day they had met…

Nino stood up and bowed before leaving the stage. Ohno snapped out of his daze, and he immediately stood up too, as he rushed to the backstage to catch Nino before he entered. Nino’s arm was still trembling, just like his whole body. When Ohno’s fingers wrapped around Nino’s, the boy turned back, his eyes holding onto Ohno’s as they stared at each other without in silence. They didn’t need to say anything. They could always understand each other as clearly as their own hearts.

It had been years of waiting and hurting, and now once again, they could finally be together…

“Don’t leave…” Ohno murmured as he leaned in closer to the boy in front of him. The warmth from Nino, the solidness of his body, the quicken beatings inside his chest… these were the only things Ohno was aware of right now. It was a need, and he couldn’t even think of letting him go again.  “Please, don’t ever leave again…”

And Nino smiled, despite a lone tear rolling down his cheeks. Ohno’s hand came to cup Nino’s cheeks as he gently wiped the tear away. He leaned in to kiss Nino’s eyes quietly; his hand smoothing Nino’s hair affectionately.

“I couldn’t continue living after that…” Ohno cried as he kissed Nino’s forehead, his own voice becoming a whisper. “I couldn’t bear the fact that I had lost you…”

“You didn’t lose me…” Nino whispered fondly, his arms wrapping around Ohno’s waist as he pulled the other closer. Finally, he thought, finally, after all those seemingly endless days, he once again had Ohno in his arms. It felt exactly like it had been centuries ago, when he was just a spirit of a forgotten garden, and Ohno was an unreachable prince. They hadn’t been able to fight against fate of being separated for such a very long time… “I’ll continue to find you, no matter how long it takes.”

“And now you found me,” Ohno smiled in tears as he hugged Nino tightly. Everything was right again, and he realized why there were so many familiarities since the day he met Nino, and why Nino seemed to know everything about him. It was because they were born for each other, and it was like that since a long time ago. “Thank you so much for finding me.”

“And this time I won’t let you go,” Nino smiled softly as he gently rubbed Ohno’s back. “I will never let you go again.”

And they both cried, but this time, those were tears of happiness. For they finally had each other in their lives to have another go at being together forever. This was what they had always been wating for since centuries ago, ever since the first time the little prince entered the hidden garden to find out about its little secret, to find his most important person.

To love and to be loved.

A/N:
So... How is it, minna? I'd love to know how you think/feel about the whole story, also the ending itself :) To be honest, I didn't think about this ending when writing this fic, but as if it was written by itself, and it just poured out when I was writing. And when they finally met each other again, I knew that was the perfect ending for them :)

Anyone want an epilogue?

To jamiestewart88 : how about wrapping it up like this? >_<
To vietnga : cannot fulfill your wish this time, gomen >_< But I said it before right? It's a fluffy fic so it just couldn't have an angsty ending~!

And I'm really happy, also relieved when everything is getting better there in Japan. They are all so brave, so strong. And so I know they would definitely overcome this!

One more thing, you guys definitely know about the fundraiser at arashi_on , and yup, I also wanted to do something rather than staying still and waiting for news, so this is my offer: Here And of course you guys also know we've reached ~17,800 USD. Amazing, Arashians!!!!!
Finally, it's a year already since my first post here in LJ! It's 14/3 (White day!!!), but I didn't post anything here to celebrate O_O So I'll celebrate it today too >_<

Have a nice day minna, taking care of yourself and continue praying for those who are still suffered from the disaster :)!!! (I love three things Ohchan taught kids through Kaibutsu-kun! Just how sweet of him XD - just random thought~)
