Chapter 2: Nightmare

“Ninomiya-kun, we need to buy some new clothes for you.” Ohno said after breakfast. Ninomiya had insisted to prepare the meal as his way to thank Ohno for letting him stay in his house until he got his memory back. Ohno just smiled and agreed, because he wasn’t good at cooking after all. And Ninomiya was really skillful that Ohno was so surprised. The meal was good, too.

Ohno stood up and put the dishes away. He changed into his t-shirt and pants when Ninomiya was busying himself with cleaning. When he finished, he saw Nino was looking at him hesitantly.

“But… I don’t have money,” Ninomiya said honestly as worry was evident in his voice. Ohno chuckled softly.

“It’s okay, it’s my friend’s shop so may be he could let you pay it later.” Ohno smiled assuringly and handled out a white t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans for Ninomiya.

Ninomiya didn’t argue as he quietly changed into the new clothes that Ohno had just given him. When Nino took out his pajamas, Ohno could see those scars again. He couldn’t help but asked curiously.

“Why do you have those scars?”

Nino looked down his own bare chest, and he looked away immediately. As if he had yet excepted their existence, maybe he even forgot about them too.

“I don’t know,” He shook his head, biting his lips nervously. “But… it seems like I have a formidable life, ne?”

“Maybe,” Ohno said with a nod, but to be honest he just couldn’t imagine Ninomiya as a yakuza or someone in the underground world. It didn’t fit. Therefore he added “Or just because of an accident, you know. Maybe your memory was affected because of that, too.”

Ninomiya nodded and smiled gratefully.

--------------------

The first thing they heard when they stepped into the cozy shop together was Aiba’s high-pitched voice.

“Sho-chan!!!! Not there!!! Put it beside Aoi!!!!”

“But I told you already! This mannequin can’t fit there!!!!”

“It’s called Akane!” Aiba corrected, and Ohno could here Sho’s moan. “Bring her here, I’ll help you!”

Ohno glimpsed around to see Aiba carrying a big mannequin with Sho giving him a hand and they were babbling about the position which they should put it down. They were too busy with it to see Ohno coming, until Ohno stepped further into the shop. Aiba was the first one who caught their sight as he gave Ohno a big welcoming grin.

“Ohchan!” He called and immediately put the mannequin down. It accidentally hit Sho’s left leg and made Sho groaned loudly as he rubbed his leg exaggeratedly. “Ah, sorry Sho-chan!”

“Aiba-chan, Sho-kun,” Ohno smiled cheerfully with his two best friends, his hand took Ninomiya’s and pulled him slightly to his side “This is Ninomiya, my friend.”

Both Sho and Aiba gave Ninomiya a friendly and warm smile. The young man smiled back nervously. Since then Aiba had totally forgotten his work earlier - it was only Sho who continued to arrange the position of the mannequins - Aiba had already made friend with Ninomiya and now he was talking to the man enthusiastically. Ohno wandered around the shop to find clothes for Ninomiya, and from here he could only hear Aiba’s voice. He reckoned that all Ninomiya could do was nodding at Aiba in agreement.

Ohno took some t-shirts, some half-sleeve shirts, pants and socks, a blue pajamas and some essential implements. Ninomiya, after Aiba had left him to greet a new customer, was standing beside Ohno, his hand tugged Ohno’s sleeve quietly.

“Ohno-san, it’s…too many,” he mumbled, only enough for Ohno to hear.

“That’s okay.” Ohno shrugged, and took all of them into the cart. “You don’t need to worry that much, Ninomiya-kun.”

“Call me Nino,” Nino suddenly said, his eyes were unfocused “I think… they called me Nino.”

“Who are ‘they’?” Ohno turned to Ninomiya - Nino, his brows furrowed. Maybe Nino had remembered?

Nino shook his head, his eyes turned back to normal “I don’t know. It’s just… the feeling, you know.”

“Oh, okay,” Ohno couldn’t tell if he was disappointed or relieved, or might be both. He started to like Nino, enough to feel a little sad if Nino would go now. “Then, Nino, let’s pay for it and…” He checked his list again “We need to go to the supermarket too.”

--------------------------

He was cold. He was hurt. The pain started growing inside his numb body, the fire was tearing him apart with its scorching hot sparks. He couldn’t see anything, his eyes were closed tightly. It would gone, he convinced himself with an uncertainly raw voice inside his head, it would gone soon. But no matter how much he prayed for the pain to go away, it still remained inside him, and he felt his body tense under the envelopment of a dark shadow above him. A hand reached out, and he opened his mouth for a soundless scream, calling for someone to help.

He shot up to sit on the sofa, the tears started to roll down on his cheeks, and he felt relief covered his body when he realized it was just a nightmare. But the feeling was strong, so strong that he almost believed it was true. Had it ever happened to him before? He didn’t remember, but the scars on his chest were prickling, and he subconscious hold his chest tightly, as if the pain still remained there. He didn’t dare to close his eyes, since he knew clearly the images would come back - a nightmare that he would never want to experience again. He couldn’t stop thinking that he had actually gone over it. It was part of his lost memory. But he was too scared to admit it, all he wanted to believe now was he was safe here. Anything had happened to him before, he didn’t want to remember, if it was just like that nightmare.

His hands were still shaking violently, and his tear was still streaming down, his whole body was wet from the sweat, he was breathing heavily. He brought his knees closer to his chest and snuggled closer to the end of the sofa. Being in the corner made him feel better. The only sound he could hear now was his sobs and his breath, and it just made his fear grew up with each second passed. If felt like time had somehow stopped in this room and he was stuck without any chance to escape.

A sound suddenly resounded from the bed room, in which he knew Ohno was sleeping. Nino shot up his head in fear. He stared at the movement in the darkness, his heart beat faster and faster, and he almost thought it was going to burst out of with chest.

“Nino?”

Ohno’s voice made him relax immediately. Until then he realized he hadn’t dared to move a muscle. Ohno turned on the light, and the white fluorescent light was so welcoming. It calmed him down slowly, though he was still hugging himself and the tear hadn’t stopped yet. Ohno was staring at him, his face looked sleepy but his eyes were totally awake. He looked confused, and worry at the same time.

“Nino, what happened? I think I heard you screaming.” Ohno asked, carefully approached Nino.

Nino shook his head, his face buried into his knees, and though he was so glad that Ohno was here, he still didn’t dare to move.

“Nino,” Ohno came and sat beside him, the warmth radiated from his steady presence made Nino calm down. When Ohno took his arms and pulled him into an embrace, Nino didn’t even think about it twice as he automatically hugged Ohno tightly. He buried his face to the crook of Ohno’s neck, and his fist clenched Ohno’s pajamas, as if holding Ohno was the only thing keep him from breaking.

“Calm down,” Ohno whispered, his hand rubbed Nino’s back comfortable “It’s okay now…”

Nino nodded, still hugged Ohno tightly. Ohno hesitantly asked.

“Nightmare?”

Nino nodded again, his voice cracked from crying.

“I think it’s my past life…” Nino murmured “I think I experienced it…”

Ohno didn’t know what to say, he felt clearly Nino’s body trembling in his embrace, and he felt clearly Nino’s fear from the way Nino hold him, his breath was fast and uneven. Ohno rubbed Nino’s back, smoothed his hair with most gentle touch.

“Someone was there…” Nino continued “And it was painful… I don’t want to remember…”

Ohno closed his eyes, thinking about those scars on Nino’s chest. Ohno shivered, who could do that to this man?

“It’s okay now, you’re safe here…” Ohno whispered to Nino’s ears, his hand never stopped smoothing the latter’s hair and rubbing his back.

After a while when Nino’s trembling body had subsided and all they could hear was the thick silence of the night, Nino snuggled closer to Ohno’s protective arms as he felt his eyelids droop down. Ohno helped him to his bedroom and he let Nino stay on his bed that night, with his arms still wrapping around Nino carefully.
