Chapter 16: Conspiracy
He caught Ninomiya’s sight one day when he was striding through the crowd in Shibuya, busying himself with the groceries for his shop.
Ninomiya didn’t see him, obviously, because he seemed not even remember Jun’s face. The other man today wasn’t alone though - it was exactly like the first time Jun saw him at Sho and Aiba’s coffee shop. Ninomiya was with two burly guard at his two sides. Ninomiya was wearing a black suit - totally different from the other day when he had simply t-shirt and jeans on. Jun noticed the blank look on his face as he entered the car. Where was he going? Jun wondered. Ninomiya didn’t look like he had a job - he seemed to be a son of a wealthy family. But Ninomiya didn’t look like he was happy. In contrary, there always was something in his brown eyes whenever Jun had a chance to look into his eyes - something Jun couldn’t decipher, something that Ninomiya was hiding from the whole world.
When Jun was about to walk away, however, at the corner of his eyes he spotted Ninomiya suddenly collapse onto the ground, with his hand clutching his chest tightly. Out of sudden, his face turned pale and sweat started to roll down. Jun could see he bit his lips helplessly as he searched frantically for something in his pocket, but seem like he couldn’t find it.
Before Jun could think twice, he immediately rushed toward Ninomiya. He threw aside his bags, totally forgot the two men beside Ninomiya as he squeezed himself into the space between Ninomiya and the car. His arms reached out to support Ninomiya as he tried to hold the other man from falling on his knees. He shouted at the two men angrily.
“What the hell are you doing there?!!! Just help!!!!”
“My…” Ninomiya breathed. Jun could feel Ninomiya’s pain just by looked at his face, and somehow, something inside him twisted. Had Ninomiya been always fought against his own pain? So it wasn’t only Nino, but Ninomiya also had his own problems? If so, was there any reason for Ninomiya to hurt Nino? “My… pills…”
“Where?” Jun asked while searching Ninomiya’s pocket, and finally he fished out a small bottle with some white pills inside. “This?”
Ninomiya could only nod. Jun opened the bottle with his teeth and shoved some pills onto Ninomiya’s hand. The other man took it in immediately, and still with his eyes closed, his head tilted a little to rest on Jun’s shoulder. A minute later, the pain seemed subside as Ninomiya’s breath evened out, his pale face took back its rusty color and he seemed better when he stood up on his own. Jun stared at Ninomiya, wondered what had just happened when the man turned to him.
“You again?” Ninomiya asked, his hand still clutching his chest but seemed like the pain had gone away.
Jun just shrugged. He didn’t know why he had helped Ninomiya. He just couldn’t leave a person in need, that was all. It wasn’t like he was worried or anything.
“Matsumoto?” Ninomiya mumbled, his frown ceased in concentration in order to recall Jun’s name “What’s your name again?”
“Jun.” Jun answered simply.
“Jun,” Ninomiya repeated, his eyes focused on the newcomer. And with an unexpected soft smile, Ninomiya said. “Thank you.”
Jun was taken aback suddenly. He didn’t think Ninomiya could smile like that. The evil in every of Ninomiya’s smile had somehow went away. And standing there, was a Ninomiya Jun had never seen before.
“What was that?” He asked “What was that pain?”
“It usually isn’t that bad,” Ninomiya answered, nonchalantly “I’m used to it.”
But Jun knew. He had learned some medical knowledge in high school, so he had some idea. With a serious tone, he asked.
“Is it heart disease?” Jun swallowed “You have a congenital heart disease, don’t you?”
Ninomiya didn’t answer for a while, his eyes looked tired, and Jun realized that Ninomiya didn’t have any reason to tell him that. He was just a stranger to Ninomiya, after all.
“Yes,” Finally, Ninomiya raised his head and looked at Jun. “I do.”
Jun could hear his own heart beating fast inside his chest. Ninomiya looked indifferent, but somewhere inside his eyes, he looked lost as if he had given up on this for a very long time.
“Why… so why…” Jun stuttered, and a thought suddenly popped up as he covered his mouth in panic “Don’t tell me…!!!”
“Shut up, Matsumoto!” Ninomiya snapped, clearly didn’t want Jun to say anything about it “Go away. I don’t want to see you around anymore!”
Jun’s eyes widened.. He didn’t know if it was his heart twisting or his anger bubbling that made him dizzy out of sudden. He opened his mouth and was about to protest, but Ninomiya had already turned away and stepped into his car. Until then Jun noticed the look which Ninomiya’s two guards were shooting at him. Their eyes were full of suspicion, and Jun wondered if they knew anything about their master. After all, when Ninomiya was in pain, they looked unsure what to do. If they were his guard, wasn’t it their responsibility to take care of Ninomiya?
With those unanswered questions in his mind, Jun stood rooted at his spot, staring at Ninomiya’s car running along the road. And in a second he thought he saw Ninomiya’s eyes on him, an apologetical look appeared on his face. Somehow his anger subsided and he sighed, waiting until the car disappeared completely into the traffic crowd.
---------------------------------------
It was the door bell ringing that woke him up at 3 in the morning. He grunted tiredly, tried to ignore it at first, but seemed like it would never stop. Jun slowly sat up, scratching his head desperately as he rolled out of his bed and reached for the front door.
“Who’s that?” He snapped. No one was supposed to visit him at this kind of time.
“Guess who?” The familiar voice resounded at the other side of the door, and the hint of a smirk in it made Jun immediately realize its owner.
He opened the door with a frown on his face. Greeting him with the usual mischievous smile was Ninomiya, in his casual clothes and his hands put deep in his pocket. He looked cold, but he was smiling. Jun didn’t know why his heart started to pick up its rate unexplainably, but he ignored it and opened the door widely for Ninomiya to enter.
“Messy,” was Ninomiya’s first complain when he stepped into the living room, his eyes squinted at Jun’s flashy clothes on the ground. He was too tired to clean up last night, since he had paid too much time thinking about the incident concerned Ninomiya.
“Shut up,” He grunted and closed the door behind them. “What are you doing here?”
Ninomiya didn’t answer right away. He sat down on the sofa and made himself comfortable as he leaned back and closing his eyes tiredly.
“Visit you. Mind?” Ninomiya smirked. Jun muttered under his breath.
“It’s not like you’re welcomed here.”
“But you let me in, after all.” Ninomiya grinned victoriously. But a second later, the grin slowly faded, and Jun noticed how tired Ninomiya looked. He was even paler than the first time Jun saw him. Worried, he approached Ninomiya and sat down beside him on the sofa.
“I want to apologize,” Ninomiya said with a nearly inaudible voice, and Jun had to concentrate to listen to him. “For… you know, yesterday.”
“Why?” Jun asked before he could think of it. He had been wondering about it the whole day, and he just couldn’t come up with the right answer.
“It’d be bad if they heard it.” Ninomiya rubbed his eyes tiredly “They would definitely harm you or something.”
“What? Who?” Jun’s brows ceased. And he suddenly understood “Those two men?”
“Yes.” Ninomiya crossed his arms and said seriously “Those damn two guards. They work for my father.”
“Who’s your father?” Jun asked. Ninomiya’s eyes darkened, and he didn’t answer. Silence grew uneasily around them, and Jun felt the need to change the topic.
“So… you have a heart disease, don’t you?”
“I do,” Ninomiya sighed. He looked tiny in this kind of clothes, Jun noticed.
“Since when?”
“Since I was born.” Ninomiya shook his head “It’s incurable.”
“But… But…” Jun’s heart tightened at the word “incurable”. Was it really that desperate?
“I think you know the reason behind all of this,” Ninomiya said calmly “That’s why I didn’t let you say any further that day.”
Jun nodded. But the idea was so unbelievable that he couldn’t bring himself to think it was true.
“It’s Nino, isn’t it? He’s your clone.” Jun mumbled.
“Yeah.” Ninomiya smiled approvingly, but there was no humor in that smile. More like a hollow one. “You’re getting there.”
“His heart… and yours…” Jun muttered. He couldn’t say it. He couldn’t believe it - didn’t want to.
“… are identical, yes.” Ninomiya continued. And he shot Jun a sad look “That’s what my dad has been doing throughout years. He wants to cure me from that disease.”
“So he made another you…” Jun’s eyes widened in shock “… and…”
“And killing him to give me life.” Ninomiya finished.
The heaviness of the answer spread around, and it tightened Jun’s heart. It was simply cruel. Too cruel for any human being. He stared at Ninomiya, expected to see any hint of agreement with this action, but he saw nothing. Ninomiya didn’t look happy, and Jun let out the sigh he had been keeping until then.
“I didn’t let him do that,” Ninomiya continued “And he was mad at me. Now, when the disease is getting worse…”
“That’s why you want Nino back that badly?” Jun shivered involuntarily. How on Earth could he feel sympathy for this man at the first place? “I… I can’t believe you! I won’t let you do that!!”
Ninomiya looked up at him, something broke inside his eyes. Jun startled. Ninomiya had never seemed so sad, it was so unfamiliar.
“I want him back,” Ninomiya admitted. Jun couldn’t stop his frustration growing uncontrollably. But then, Ninomiya added “But not because of what you are thinking.”
“So, because of what??”
Ninomiya looked away from Jun. He clearly didn’t want to really answer the question.
“I’ve been living with him since we both were children. And we grew up together.”
Jun’s eyes widened and he felt something throbbing in his chest. He tried to compose himself, not letting the disappointment now started to welling inside him.
“You’re not going to scarify his life…?”
“I won’t.” Ninomiya shook his head with a frown “Why should I do that??”
“But you’re going to die…” Jun whispered in disbelief. What kind of person Ninomiya could be, despite what he had been showing to the world?
“I don’t care.” Ninomiya shrugged “I don’t care, okay? I could die tomorrow, it’s just a matter of time.”
Jun’s throat was locked by the sudden emotion washed over him. Ninomiya looked honest. His face didn’t crumple when he said the word “die”, as if he had accepted it for a very long time already. But he looked so lonely that Jun wanted to tell him to get out of his world or at least, let someone enter it with him.
“But…” He started. And Ninomiya cut him off.
“But he hated me,” Ninomiya rolled his eyes in disbelief “Why the hell is that, after all that we shared together?!”
“Because you hurt him terribly, isn’t that too obvious?” Jun shook his head with a frown. Those scars on Nino’s chest were real.
“I thought he enjoyed that?” Ninomiya’s brows ceased. “He had never told me he didn’t like it. He just simply gave in.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Jun rolled his eyes. He couldn’t believe this man. He tortured his clone - his friend, or whatever - and thought that the other enjoyed the pain? “You hurt him when you were... well,” Jun’s face turned red as the mention of it “...having sex?”
“Making love,” Ninomiya corrected nonchalantly. Jun shuddered at the answer. The thought they two were doing stuff was too weird for him to accept. It was just so wrong, just so unacceptable. But it happened. And maybe, it wasn’t Nino or Ninomiya’s fault. They had to be kept away from the whole world all of those years. It was the father - whoever he was - ‘s fault.
“You are such a DoS, aren’t you?”
“Am I what?” Ninomiya raised one of his brows. Jun sighed. It seemed like this man really had no idea about that.
“I’ll tell you about it later…” Jun mumbled, his voice lowered. It was getting too complicated to understand right away, both Ninomiya and Nino’s story, and even Jun’s feeling. He didn’t even know why he was getting involved in this. He couldn’t see any light at the end of the dark tunnel he had fallen into. It was hopeless.
But Jun wasn’t kind of a guy giving up easily.
------------------------------------------
A/N: Well, I was having goosebumps all over when I wrote that part. I know it sounds lame (for being a DoS and hurt the other) T_T But urg, I just can't let Nino to be a really bad guy. Blame me T_T And I'm really sorry. This is going to end soon, I'm going to update it almost everyday, because it's a year already since I started it. I want to finish it and maybe, move on to the next ones. I've been far away from the fandom for a long time, and when I come back, things changed a lot... Is there any recommend for me to catch up with Arashi as soon as possible? Feel like an outsider already T_T
And thank you so much for still reading this. I was thinking to myself, "should I stop, because it's been a really long time and people may forget it and forget me already", and I thought "Well I would check my Flags collector, if I have 100 flags I will continue". When I checked it the other day, it was 100 flags collected. I was seriously thankful for those who still visit my page till now (though it was desserted for so long), and those who still read my fics. Thank you so, so, so much, really. It gave me strength to come back now. And I hope you still enjoy reading... :)
See you tomorrow with the next chapter :)
