Chapter 19: I found you.
He didn’t want to ask Nino at first, since he didn’t want Nino to know about the relationship between him and Ninomiya. And somehow, at the bottom of his heart, he didn’t want Nino to tell Ohno about that either. Ohno didn’t like Ninomiya, and maybe, Jun thought to himself, Ohno hated Ninomiya for everything he had done to Nino.
But Jun had no choice. The only one who had a connection with Ninomiya was Nino, and Nino was the only one he thought would have some idea of Ninomiya’s whereabouts. So he decided, he would try. He definitely didn’t want something to happen to Ninomiya and he couldn’t make it on time.
“Jun?” Nino answered his phone, he sounded surprised when he heard Jun’s panic voice “What’s wrong?”
“Which hospital does he usually visit?” Jun asked hastily.
“You mean who?” Nino said, confused.
“Ninomiya. I’m sorry, Nino, I shouldn’t have asked you. But...”
“Ninomiya?” Nino stayed quiet for a while. And Jun took it as a refusal.
“Please, Nino, I need to know... I’ll explain later, okay? Just tell me, please...” He pleaded. Jun usually didn’t plead. But this was important.
“I…” Nino frowned. He sounded honest when he said “I don’t really remember, Jun...”
Disappointment raised inside Jun’s heart, but then he heard Nino said quickly.
“But I think I know a place where you could find him.”
“Oh God,” Jun didn’t try to hide his relief “Thank you!!”
-------------------
Jun couldn’t believe that he had gone this far to find Ninomiya - who just a month ago he didn’t even know about his existence until. Now, he was standing in front of a private hospital, the one that had the best service in Japan. He knew it cost a lot of money to stay here. But he wasn’t surprised this time - it was hard to surprise at anything after those things he had been through just the last month.
He still couldn’t understand why he had come all the way just to be here. It was unexplainable, that strong yet invisible connection between them which he didn’t know it had ever existed continued to nag at his mind and demanded him to give an explanation. But Jun knew he didn’t know it also. He just did it all by his intuition.
And now that intuition had led him here, standing awkwardly in front of the gate, pondered over the idea of coming back or just barging in without permission.
The second thought was stronger though, so he didn’t think for too long before he took a deep breath and came to the secretary desk.
It was all quiet inside the hospital. The scent of alcohol lingered in the air. The lobby was desert, Jun barely saw any patient, just some nurses urgently walked from room to room. Jun was indicated to the first floor where the special patient was being taken care of. He walked in the lobby with unusual nerve and carefully not making any noises as not to disturb other patients.
Ninomiya’s name was written on the card hanging on the fifth door he passed. Jun came to a stop and hesitantly listened carefully. There was no sound inside, except the murmuring sound of the machines from somewhere. Jun’s heart suddenly picked up its rate as he clearly felt the nerve of himself, accompanied by the unspoken worry that had always been remaining in his mind since yesterday. Ninomiya looked pale the last time they met, and the incident… He wished he could turn back time and fix things again.
He pushed the door soundlessly. From his view through the small gap of the door, he could only see part of the bed on which he assumed Ninomiya was laying, with a white blanket wrapped around him. He couldn’t see Ninomiya’s face. An insecure feeling built up inside his stomach, refused to go away until he decided it wasn’t time to be shy and pushed the door open as he entered the room.
Ninomiya wasn’t facing him. He laid on his side and turned to the window, seemingly asleep. Jun suddenly lost all his confidence when he stood there, at the threshold, unable to come any closer to the man he had been searching for days, who was just a few inches away from him…
“I told you to leave me alone.”
A cold voice resounded from the bed. It was unmistakably Ninomiya’s voice; it froze Jun at his spot. He felt something twitching inside his chest, annoyingly pulling him back and refused to let him get any closer to Ninomiya. He hated that feeling, like there was an unbreakable wall between them and he just couldn’t get through it.
“Don’t you hear me?” Ninomiya’s voice got angrier as he turned around, and before Jun could escape from the room, Ninomiya was staring at him with his widened eyes, obviously in shock with Jun’s presence. A flash of hope flickered through Jun’s mind, but he didn’t let it rise too high. Ninomiya blinked slowly, as if he didn’t believe any of his eyes. He stared at Jun, made it harder for the other to breathe or to speak now, so Jun could do nothing but standing awkwardly and giving Ninomiya a weak yet stiff smile.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
Ninomiya said slowly, his voice wasn’t as angry as lately but his stern tone didn’t change. The difference was, the harshness was toward Jun now.
“I… visit you?”
“How do you know I’m here?” Ninomiya’s brows furrowed.
“Nino told me.” Jun answered hesitantly.
“That idiot…!” Ninomiya hissed as he closed his eyes in annoyance. Jun suddenly felt like his decision to come here was so wrong. Ninomiya clearly didn’t want him here. But as stubborn as Jun always was and because he was here anyway, he decided not to run away. He took a step closer to Ninomiya’s bed, earning himself a glare from the latter.
“How are you?”
“Fine, thanks.” Ninomiya grunted and covered half of his face with the blanket “Am I supposed to ask back?”
“No,” Jun chuckled but his smile immediately disappeared as he saw Ninomiya glaring at him. “But I’m fine, anyway.”
“Stupid,” Ninomiya turned to his side again and intentionally ignored Jun. Jun took a chair and sat down beside Ninomiya’s bed.
“You’re not fine,” Jun stated. It was not a question, and Ninomiya remained silent. “Why didn’t you tell me? I was scared to dead when I came to your house and they told me you were hospitalized!”
“Like you’d care,” Ninomiya mumbled as he buried his face to his pillow, refused to acknowledge Jun’s stare at his back.
“Of course I care!” Jun defended quickly “Why don’t I?!”
“You ignored me that day,” Ninomiya accused, and Jun needed to get closer to his bed in order to hear Ninomiya’s words.
“I didn’t!”
“Yes you did!”
“No! Why should I have ignored you?!”
“Because you have no reason to care about me!!!” Ninomiya burst out, his voice broke, and Jun froze for a second before he moved to sit down beside Ninomiya on his bed.
“What the hell are you doing with me, Jun?” Ninomiya continued, his voice wasn’t as calm as before “You’re just like them! You also hate me, right? So why on Earth that you keep acting like this? I don’t need your pity!!”
“I do not pity you!!” Jun defensed, his tone also raised up. His heart was beating so fast in his chest as if bursting out his ribcage. At that moment, he wanted Ninomiya to look at him, look at his eyes to know that he wasn’t lying. But Ninomiya refused to turn back, even when Jun put a hand on his shoulder.
“So why?” Ninomiya asked shakily.
“I…” Jun couldn’t find the right answer. He didn’t know it himself. Why had he always been following Ninomiya? Why was he so worried about him when knowing his condition getting worse? Since when all his thoughts revolved around this person?
“Leave,” Ninomiya breathed, demanded determinedly “Just leave me alone.”
“No,” Jun felt the need to protest, because he wasn’t going to leave Ninomiya when he was still misunderstanding him. Not again. “I’m not leaving you!”
“Why??!”
“Because I don’t hate you, damn it!!!” Jun nearly shouted at a stubborn Ninomiya. Ninomiya froze for a moment, then he turned back to look at Jun’s face, waiting. There was that loneliness look inside those eyes again, and this time the urge to wipe it away was so strong that Jun couldn’t fight against it, so he let himself do what he wanted. He leaned in.
And kissed Ninomiya’s eyes gently.
