Chapter 1
He hated him.
He meant it, he really hated him.
The boy who had just suddenly moved into his house and became his stepbrother - Nino really, really hated him.
First, it was because now he had to share his mom. Not just with one people, but two. Second, now he had to call him nii-san, since that boy was three years older than him.
But who was him anyway?
They weren’t brother, not at all. Even though his Dad was going to marry Nino’s Mom and soon they would become a family, but they were no blood-related. And there was no reason for Nino to call him his older brother, like no reason for Nino to call that man Dad, beyond that also there was no reason for Nino to respect these strangers who had just moved into his house without his permission (it wasn’t like his Mom needed his permission to marry this man, though). But he wasn’t going to change his surname to Ohno - no, he would never ever do that, he was too used to his nickname as Nino, and he preferred to be called that way.
Therefore when his Mom announced her wedding, with an unusual bright smile which Nino hadn’t seen for a very long time, at first he had frowned. Of course he winced and objected by all his heart, but when she rushed to him and hugged him tightly with tears could be seen in her eyes, Nino’s heart softened as he admitted that clearly she needed someone rather than his Dad - the one who had left his wife and his son for an another woman. So Nino finally gave a small nod and earned himself a breathtaking embrace from his Mom.
But he never, ever thought that he would have to deal with this later.
The boy standing in front of Nino, beside his Dad, looked a little shy and obviously absent-minded. Nino just glanced at him while he was picking his nose sleepily. Nino’s Mom came to greet both of them with her warmest smile, and Nino couldn’t help but feel the envy tugging at his stomach when his Mom hugged that boy tightly. The boy returned her hug with a smile, and when his Dad - now was also Nino’s Dad reached out his hand for Nino to take, Nino didn’t take it and turned his head away.
He knew that his mom was looking at him sadly, he could feel the intensity of the aura around him and at that moment, he thought he couldn’t stand it anymore. So he took a deep breath and shook his hand - just the simplest touch he had ever done in his life. And then, of course, he ignored the hand of the boy and just looked away, found himself suddenly very interested with a small bug flying outside the window.
“Kazunari-kun, this is Satoshi.” His stepfather said, and Nino didn’t turn back. His mom sighed.
“Kazu, behave yourself.” Her voice was stern, and Nino hated it, because his mom was always gentle with him. He had never been scolded, and now he was - because of a strange man!
“Satoshi, this is Kazunari. He’s a little stubborn, you see.” His mom said, and Nino stared at her in disbelief, how could she say that? He wasn’t stubborn, he was a nice boy - she told him before! And now it was because of these people, she said he was stubborn??
“I don’t mind,” Satoshi replied, and his voice was so soft that Nino hated how it suddenly made him feel guilty. No, he had no fault, it was all theirs. He didn’t welcome them here, but since his mom loved them, it was the only reason for him to let them stay. For a while, he thought mentally.
“Kazu, Satoshi will share the room with you, okay? Until we arrange him another room… We still haven’t had time to do that…” His mom said casually, and Nino rolled his eyes as if he didn’t believe any of his ears.
“What??” He hissed in clear annoyance, but his Mom had already been giving his stepfather a tour around the room, and since that Satoshi didn’t have any intention to follow them, Nino was left here alone with him. Uneasiness settled around them and Nino didn’t want to stay here any longer. He wanted nothing but to come back to his room and locked the door so he could finally be free from this boy - oh wait, since they had to share his room from now on, did it mean he couldn’t do that either?? He groaned mentally.
Satoshi was still eyeing him in silence with a small smile on his face and Nino found this extremely annoying, normal people just didn’t stare at the person they had just met minutes ago like that! And that smile, he hated that smile, because it made him feel like he was being read thoroughly like an open book…
“Nice to meet you,” Satoshi said, and Nino startled. When that soft voice was directly to him, also while those eyes were still setting on him, it was not a nice feeling. Nino’s heart raced. He turned away, pointedly saying without words that I don’t want to talk to you, but Satoshi already approached him with his hand taking his luggage.
“Now can you show me our room? I’m kind of tired with this luggage. It's heavy.”
Nino had to stop himself from rolling his eyes again at the word of “our room”. He knew that Satoshi had all the right to now call Nino’s room our room, but apparently Nino hadn’t allowed him, Nino hadn’t said a word to him actually, but hey, didn’t he realize that Nino didn’t want him here , not at all?
“Can I call you Kazu, too?” Satoshi said conversationally, and he looked genuinely happy, despite the silence treatment Nino was giving him.
“It’s Nino!” Nino snapped, and Satoshi widened his eyes before answered softly.
“But… is that okay? Isn’t that weird that I’m calling you Nino? Because soon you’d also change to…”
“I said call me Nino!” Nino grinded his teeth. The thought of being called Kazu was terrible, but the worst thing was being called by that surname of this boy. Ohno. How he hated that name. It sounded stupid. Crazy. Crazily stupid. Whatever.
“Oh, okay, Nino,” Satoshi gave up as he saw Nino’s cold eyes. He knew he had no chance to win against this stubborn boy. “So what are you going to call me…”
“Ohno,” Nino said firmly and determinedly, and Satoshi could do nothing but widened his eyes again at Nino’s answer.
“But isn’t that weird??” Satoshi didn’t know that he was repeating the same question as before “It’s, you know, you can’t call me Ohno because it’s also my Dad and Mom’s name…”
“I’ll call you Ohno!” Nino snapped again and when he thought about it, it would be very likely he would be scolded if his Mom ever knew that, so he added “Satoshi when we’re at home, then.”
“Oh,” Satoshi titled his head, as though he was considering the idea. However, Ohno had no choice but nodded his head “Okay.”
“Fine.” Nino smirked, felt a little satisfied with himself. When Satoshi asked him the room again, he agreed to lead him to their room without any other complaints. The tingling hatred was still there though, and Nino knew as long as Satoshi was living here, he would still feel that way because simply, he just couldn’t stand that calmness radiating from that boy, and he couldn’t stand that sleepy smile and that stupid grin and those too-warm eyes…
Because he hated everything about Satoshi, he already decided about that.
