Chapter 5

Nino couldn’t pay attention.

It was the fifth time he made another mistake again while he was playing his guitar, making the whole group grumble since they had to practice it all over again. Nino couldn’t do anything else but mumbled ‘sorry’ because his mind wasn’t entirely here. Usually, Nino was relax when he played his guitar and so making mistake didn’t happen frequently. However, today was different. Ohno had said that he would come to the Music club after the school, because Nino had insisted that he wanted Ohno to be in the same club with him. And Ohno had indulged Nino once again.

When the door creaked open and someone stepped into the room, Nino’s heart doubled its rate automatically. He immediately turned towards the door to see the person standing there, looked like a little lost but apparently awe with the happening activity.
“How can I help you?” The club’s president said when he waved for everyone to stop, and Nino almost put down his guitar and rushed toward his brother. However, he hesitated, and finally he chose to stay at his spot. After all, the idea of Ohno being his older brother still bothered him and he didn’t like that at all, so he didn’t want anyone to know it.

Ohno saw him, though. From afar Ohno gave him a gentle smile that Nino started to wonder whether he hated or liked this smile, because Ohno seemed like he was shining with his smile, and Nino didn’t like shining things because it hurt his eyes when he looked directly at them. But Ohno was different. Ohno had something that made it hard to look away. Ohno always caught Nino’s eyes in some unexplainable way.

“Ano, I… um,” Ohno faltered as he looked troubled about finding a word when the club’s president approached him “I want to… join this club, so I want to see how it works before signing in.”
“Oh,” The president - the boy with sloppy shoulder about which Nino always teased him - grinned as he approached Ohno and extended his hand. “I’m Sakurai Sho, the president of the music club. Welcome!”
“Ohno Satoshi,” Ohno smiled, and Nino suddenly felt an itch deep down in his heart. Since he didn’t know what that feeling was, he brushed it away violently together with a need to snap at Ohno and tell him to stop smiling like that at just random people. “Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you, Ohno-kun,” Sho smiled and he pointed at the audience seats “You can sit there and watch our practice. We have some rules, but I’ll explain it to you after the practice, okay?”
“Okay,” Ohno nodded. He moved to a near-front seat and sat down, his eyes looked for Nino again. When Nino was caught staring at Ohno, the younger boy looked away immediately, didn’t notice his own ears reddened. He turned his attention back to his guitar, tried to remember how to play it properly because Ohno was looking at him and he couldn’t make those stupid mistakes again. He had been making mistakes for the whole practice and now he just couldn’t let Ohno see them.

But from the corner of his eyes, he also saw Sho looked at Ohno with strange warm eyes and then he gestured towards Ohno, as if with the sign he tried to say “We’ll start.” and again Ohno smiled widely at Sho after that. Nino’s hand slipped from the chord and for the first time in his life he couldn’t finish the song when the practice ended, and it might be the worst practice he had ever had since he entered this club.

“Nino,” Ohno called when everyone started to collect their stuff, chattering aloud. Nino was kind of embarrassed and pissed; he felt all his blood ran to his face when Ohno came closer to him. Surely, Ohno must’ve thought him as a loser. “You were great.”
“I wasn’t,” Nino snapped, showed his annoyance more than he had intended to, and Ohno looked surprised, but then the boy smiled gently at him. Nino’s heart raced again.
“You were,” Ohno said without blinking “And I want to join this club, but all I can do is singing. I can’t play any instrument.”
“We have singers here, too,” Sho suddenly interfered from somewhere behind them. Nino rolled his eyes at Sho who innocently approached the two boys with a grin on his face “You’re always welcomed here! You can apply as a singer in our club!”
“Oh, really?” Ohno’s eyes lit up, and Nino’s face darkened. He hated it when this boy looked always so bright and so naïve while talking to others, and he hated it when everyone seemed to love Ohno. Include this Sakurai boy.
“Yes, of course,” Sho nodded and he asked again “Anyway, which class are you in? I didn’t see you around much…”
“I’m at class 2-3,” Ohno answered genuinely “I’m not going out that much.”
“Ah, so your classroom is beside mine!” Sho exclaimed happily and he shook Ohno’s hand again, and the tug at Nino’s stomach happened again. He could feel a need to slap Sho’s hand away from Ohno. However, because he didn’t know why he ever wanted to do that, and because he was in the middle of a crowd so he kept his hand for himself when he gathered his stuff, intentionally he made more noises than usual.
“We should meet at lunch tomorrow,” Sho suggested nicely as he handled Ohno a piece of paper “This is the club’s rules and I’ll explain them to you tomorrow….”
“You don’t have to!” Nino snapped, because the thought of Ohno having lunch with Sho was definitely a No and because he didn’t want Ohno to agree and because… He didn’t know why, but Ohno couldn’t have lunch with this boy. Nino wouldn’t allow him to.
Both Sho and Ohno stared at Nino in surprise. The younger boy frowned disapprovingly at them as he rolled his eyes.
“I can tell him those rules!!!”
“Huh? But you are…” Sho startled, and he looked at Nino and Ohno questioningly. Ohno began to explain but Nino didn’t let him finish.
“We’re br…”
“… Friend,” Nino said, and he glanced at Ohno, he was like Don’t you dare to say anything. Ohno looked confused, but he stopped before the word ‘brother’ come out from his mouth.
“Oh,” Sho looked surprise, and he titled his head “So, uhm. You can explain the rules to him, ne?”
“Of course I can!” Nino said firmly. He tugged Ohno’s hand back to prevent him to reach out to shake Sho’s again - they had shook twice and it was more than enough.
“Oh, so, yes. Of course.” Sho smiled, he looked troubled, and Nino knew what he was thinking. He wanted to be alone with Ohno. It might be Sho liked Ohno at the first sight. But it was definitely a No. Because Nino was his brother, and because he didn’t like Sho - well, he had still liked Sho until this afternoon, but not anymore - so he wouldn’t allow Sho to approach Ohno. And that was why he would keep Ohno away from this boy. As far as possible.
“So, see you two again ne, at the next meeting,” Sho smiled weakly as he looked a little deflated at Nino’s harsh expression. Nino didn’t leave his eyes from the boy’s back until he was sure that there was no more danger and he turned to Ohno, who was still standing behind him, looked confused but sheepish at the same time.
“You!” Nino snapped, though he didn’t really know what Ohno had done wrong. He just felt the need to snap. So he did. And as always, Ohno just looked back at him with a slight frown on his face and Nino suddenly felt so stupid.
“Me?” Ohno asked, and Nino’s stomach did a flip-flop. Ohno was looking at him, and Nino felt strangely uncomfortable, so he needed to look away. He couldn’t find any word and he couldn’t say anything since his throat seemed to be blocked, and he just stormed out of the room, with a very confused Ohno following behind.
“Nino,” Ohno called, but Nino didn’t slow down his step until Ohno called again “Kazu!”

Nino stopped right away. He could feel his heart beat so fast in his chest that it was making him dizzy, and he was also too aware of Ohno’s presence behind him. Ohno was close to his back, and he knew that if he had turned, he would’ve seen Ohno’s face right in front of his, but he had no courage to do so. So he just stayed still, and he heard Ohno sighed as the boy came to his side and took his hand quietly.
“What’s wrong?” Ohno asked, and Nino found himself asking the same question.
“Nothing.” Nino’s voice was nowhere near as convincing as he wanted it to be, so Ohno wasn’t tricked. The older boy asked again, this time firmly and sternly.
“You’re acting strange. What’s wrong?”
“Am I?” Nino asked, frowning. Was he? No, he wasn’t acting strange at all, this was just a very usual day in his life, very usual things he had done every day…

Just the only difference was that feeling towards Ohno. It had changed into something Nino couldn’t decipher anymore.

“You are,” Ohno asked and he tugged his brother’s hand, turned him away so he was facing Nino. “What did I do wrong?”
Nino took a deep breath as he recalled the whole situation in his mind. He was still pretty happy when Ohno showed up at the door this afternoon. Then it was Sho who greeted Ohno way too friendly and those looks Sho was shooting Ohno the whole time; Ohno should’ve been angry and should’ve never looked at those perverted eyes of Sho again. But Ohno just smiled. The same warm smile that Nino was always used to get from Ohno, and Nino hated the fact that now it was also given another person apart from him.

But how could he say that? He knew Ohno was always oblivious about everything. Yet he was pretty sure that Sho had interest in Ohno. Moreover, Sho was perfect and he was the target of many girls in this school, Nino knew if Sho wanted, maybe he found a way to make Ohno like him back.

The thought annoyed Nino so much that he needed to snap to cover his anger.
“You,” Nino snapped again, tried to find the right word - he didn’t know which word was right for like this situation though, because he also didn’t know what he was trying to say now either - “That boy. I mean, Sakurai. He… Well. Just.”
“Nino, I don’t understand,” Ohno sighed, “Sakurai?”
“He was talking to you,” Nino finally said, and when he realized how stupid it sounded, his face warmed up. And Ohno’s confused smile didn’t help him either.
“And what was so wrong with him talking to me?” Ohno asked, and Nino found himself unable to find an answer. Well, maybe he could. He just didn’t dare to come up with that conclusion.
“I don’t know,” Nino admitted, “I just… I don’t like it.”
“Oh,” was all Ohno said. A pause. And then, “You like Sho?”
“WHAT?” Nino rolled his eyes, and he looked at Ohno as if this boy was the most idiotic person on Earth.
“You like Sho, so you don’t like when I talk to him too much, ne” Ohno said, and Nino groaned inside. How could Ohno even think that was possible? How could Ohno not try to reverse the position?  “I got it.”
No, you don’t get it at all. Nino thought miserably. It definitely wasn’t Sho that he liked. And all of that left him with the only conclusion that he was trying to avoid, but it was so obvious now that it was hard to ignore the small voice at the back of his mind telling him that his hatred for this boy had finally turned into something he didn’t expect at the very first time they met.
