Chapter 7

The next day when Ohno woke up, Nino had already gone to school.

Last night, although he had been waiting for Nino to come back from school, Nino had stayed outside really late. Even when Nino had come home he had just sat in the kitchen, doing things around, playing his DS at the living room, intentionally hadn’t let them stay together alone at any moment. When Ohno had thought he had caught Nino alone, Nino had definitely found a way to call their mom - or dad about something and they had showed up, and Ohno had lost his chance. He had been waiting in their bedroom but Nino must’ve stayed at the living room until Ohno had fallen asleep.

Ohno sighed. He blinked slowly, tried to get the situation of the day before yesterday back in his mind. Something like a cloud had covered his mind, and he found himself unable to understand Nino’s feeling. Nino gave out mixed signals and Ohno sometimes almost believed Nino liked him, but most of the time he barely felt that way. He thought Nino had gradually accepted him as his older brother. But thinking about Ohno differently, specially? Ohno wasn’t so sure.

However, maybe - just maybe, Nino did like him back and somehow, when he said that Nino was just a brother, he had hurt Nino’s feeling?
Ohno shook his head. It sounded strange even in his mind. Was it even possible? But if it wasn’t the case, what was the reason for Nino to get upset? Or just because Nino thought Ohno was forcing himself into liking Nino? But if Nino didn’t like him, why did it even matter for Nino?

It got really complicated thinking by himself like this, and Ohno realized he would come up with no answer just debating within himself. He had to talk to Nino, and it should’ve been as soon as possible, because Nino being sad also made him unable to feel happy.

Therefore, he decided to come to Nino’s classroom that noon. Welcoming him was Aiba, Nino had already left.  Apparently Nino had told Aiba something, because Aiba was looking at him disapprovingly - it was unusual because Aiba was always friendly with him. Ohno sighed slightly. He just had to ask Aiba for Nino’s whereabouts, he thought.
“You don’t understand him,” Aiba replied to Ohno’s question with a shrug. He didn’t give away Nino’s place, though “He had hoped that you would understand, and he almost told you, but…”
“Please tell me where he is,” Ohno insisted. He just had to meet Nino, because avoiding each other would lead them to nowhere and because he wanted to fix this, he wanted Nino to be back by his side, not running away from him.
Aiba looked like he was debating within himself really hard. He looked like he wanted to tell Ohno, but Nino must have made him to promise not to reveal his hidden place to Ohno.
“I really need to talk to him.” Ohno added and bit his lips.
“He would kill me,” Aiba shook his head “If you’re going there to hurt him even more, I won’t tell you…”
“I won’t,” Ohno hurriedly said “I won’t. I’m going to fix this, Aiba-chan, really…”
Aiba hesitated, and maybe because Ohno could look really honest, finally Aiba told him with a small voice. He added when Ohno turned and started to run to that place immediately.
“Don’t tell him I told you!!!”

When Ohno reached the terrace of their school, Nino was really there. Nino’s back leaned to the wall and his eyes were closed. The bentou was abandoned beside him. Nino looked like he was sleeping. But right when he heard the footsteps, he opened his eyes almost immediately and turned his head towards Ohno’s direction. When he saw Ohno standing there, his eyes once again glared in anger and he stood up abruptly, took his bentou and was about to leave. He had no intention to talk to Ohno, because he was still in a bad mood since that day’s conversation. However, Ohno wouldn’t let Nino escape from that easily this time. He quickened his steps and before Nino could run away, he caught Nino’s arm and made the boy stay. Nino struggled to get out of his hold, but he couldn’t, because Ohno was stronger than he looked like and maybe because - Ohno thought hopefully - Nino did want Ohno to hold him back.

“Let me go!” Nino snapped, he was looking anywhere but Ohno’s eyes.
“Nino - Kazu, I’m sorry.” He said hurriedly before Nino could stop him “I didn’t mean it like that, I really didn’t… I like you, really like you, and…”
“Don’t you need to say that again,” Nino said, and Ohno frowned. There was no more anger in Nino’s voice, there was only something that closed to frustration “I know it already.”
“No, you don’t,” Ohno said desperately “You don’t know it at all!”
“What?” Nino rolled his eyes “Really, Satoshi, what are you…”
“I like you,” Ohno said breathlessly “Not like a brother, Kazu, I like you.”

There was silence followed Ohno’s confession. Nino was staring at him, his eyes squinted, as if he was trying to read if there was any lie hidden behind Ohno’s words. Ohno had already spit out his feelings, no turning back anymore... He was just about to tell Nino that he wasn’t forced to like him, but somehow, his heart felt like he had to say this - He had to say this or Nino would never listen to him...

Ohno swallowed hard before continued.
“I… I was scared.” He admitted quietly “That I would creep you out, and you’d avoid me… But I can’t stand you being hurt like this. I’m sorry.”
“Seriously?” Nino asked, his voice small and hopeful and Ohno had the urge to hug Nino tightly. He had always hold himself back, but now Nino knew it already, so why did he have to hold himself back anymore? So he just leaned in closer and pulled Nino into his arms. To his relief, Nino didn’t push him away.
“Seriously.” Ohno repeated, his arms around Nino tightened, as if he was trying to convey his feeling to Nino’s heart. Nino looked perplexed at first, but the other boy hugged him back hesitantly. For several minutes none of them said anything. Ohno closed his eyes, took a deep breath, remembered Nino’s scent around him which was so familiar to him that it was so peaceful holding Nino like this.

It was Nino who broke the silence, and it was totally out of Ohno’s expectation when Nino said, very low but enough for Ohno to hear.
“I like you, too.” He admitted, and Ohno had to pull back to look at Nino’s eyes. Those eyes were looking at him shyly, and Ohno couldn’t help but grinning like an idiot when Nino pinched his cheeks playfully. “Not brother-like, mind you.”
Ohno nodded gleefully. It was hard to believe at first, but it was all that he wanted to know. So, the signals Nino gave him had not been lying... Ohno smiled. The happiness flowed inside him, and he had to admit that this was happier than the imagination of this scene in his mind...
“But,” Nino suddenly pulled back as his eyes turned sad at that moment “We are… you know, and we can’t…”
“Why can’t we?” Ohno asked with a frown “It’s not like we’re blood-related!”
“But your dad married my mom,” Nino said, matter-of-factly “And we’re brother nonetheless!”
“You really want to be my brother that much?” Ohno’s frowned deepened. Nino shook his head frantically.
“No, it’s not like that!” Nino bit his lips “Just, you know, what they - our parents - would say about this? I mean, if we ever- if we are…”
“… dating?” Ohno grinned, and Nino blushed. But he nodded anyway.
“They would get angry,” Nino buried his face onto Ohno’s shoulder “They would never agree. They’d be disappointed. They’d be…”
“Shh,” Ohno said coaxingly, his hand stroking Nino’s back gently “Don’t say things that haven’t come yet. Maybe they’d be cooler than we think.”
“But…”
“Even though they really wouldn’t agree, I’d still fight for you.” Ohno said, and his ears grew pink at his own statement. It sounded sappy, and he didn’t know he would be able to say something as sappy as that. But when Nino squeezed his arms around him, it proved him that he had said the right words, because then Nino seemed to relax in his arms.
