Chapter 10
The hospital room was cold. Nino was too tired to even think about anything. His Mom was being treated in the emergency room. Nino, Ohno and Dad were sitting outside, waiting any news from her impatiently. All the strength to fight for their love left Nino momentarily. He still couldn’t forget her eyes when she looked at them - the emotion he had never seen before in his Mom’s face. She was shocked, and he hated to admit it, but apparently she also disapproved their love, just like Dad. This made their love coming to the end just when it was about to start.
No one said any word while waiting, there were noises along the lobby, but no word was exchanged between those three. Each chased after their own thoughts, and Nino wasn’t sure what Ohno was thinking. He wished he could know what was inside the older boy’s mind, because now Nino didn’t know what was inside his. Because of all that had happened, Nino couldn’t be so sure about them anymore.
When the door opened and the doctor stepped out, the first who rushed to her was Nino. He looked insistently at the doctor when she informed them about his Mom’s condition.
“She’s got too emotional so her blood pressure got too high. Now it’s more stable, but please make sure that won't happen again, okay?”
“Yeah...” Nino breathed out a sigh of relief by knowing that she was okay, but then fear rose inside his chest again. If she couldn’t stand this and it got her worse and also it could have endangered her life... What should’ve he done? What should’ve they done from now on?
Ohno didn’t say a word till then. He didn’t look at Nino either. He knew this was Nino’s decision, because it was Nino’s birth mom, and he had no power over this. He could fight against his father no matter how hard he could slap him, but Nino... Nino couldn’t risk his mother’s life.
They came home later when the doctor said that his Mom would need to stay in the hospital for tonight to be sure she would be okay. On the way home, no one said a word, the intense silence was like before. But this time, there was something heavy in the air, something that even made everyone unable to breath. Ohno counted each step, wished that the way come home would never end. Because he knew Nino would have to give the decision soon.
When they reached their home, Ohno was about to come upstairs to their room when his Dad called him back with a stern voice.
“Satoshi!”
He startled, as he turned around and saw his Dad pointed at the sofa.
“You sleep here tonight!”
Nino opened his mouth to protest when Dad glared at him too.
“You saw what happened, I have to make sure nothing would happen between you two. I don’t want her to get hurt, it’d kill her.”
“We’re not going to do anything!!!!” Nino rolled his eyes in disbelief “You can’t let him sleep here, it’s cold!!!”
“I’ll get him blanket and pillows,” Dad said, determined, and he added when he saw Nino still stood dumfounded at the threshold “Go upstairs and sleep. Tomorrow we’ll go to the hospital again.”
Mentioning about his Mom made Nino unable to utter another word. Ohno closed his eyes tiredly as he sat down on the sofa. He looked at his brother.
“I’m okay, you should go to sleep.”
“But..!” Nino was about to protest but Ohno already laid down and closed his eyes. He looked really tiny there on the sofa, and Nino’s heart squirmed, in fact all he wanted to do was to wrap his arms around Ohno’s waist to somehow soothe each other’s pain.
Today was such a long day.
He sighed and gave up. He moved upstairs with heavy steps, and when he reached their room, he threw himself on his bed, exhausted.
He had expected it to be terrible, he just didn’t know it was such a disaster. He couldn’t find any way for them to continue... Not if his mom would be shocked again and who knew next time what could happen to her...
Nino’s tears rolled down on his face. He loved his mom, but he loved Satoshi too. Why couldn’t he be happy with the two of them around? Why couldn’t he have the persons he loved the most beside him? Why did he have to choose one of them?
He closed his eyes tiredly, wished that he didn’t have to give out the decision, wished that everything would miraculously become better.
That night he slept without feeling Ohno around, without hearing his snoring, without sweet ‘goodnights’ and small kisses. He realized that he had been too depending on Ohno, so now when the other boy wasn’t here, he found himself too incomplete and it made him unable to really relax.

When they met their mom at the hospital next day, she was staring at the ceiling. He and Ohno entered the room, tried to make as little noises as possible. But she could still hear them. She called when Nino was closed enough to her.
“Kazu...”
“Hai, mom...” Nino mumbled as he came beside her and took her hand. She let out a sigh.
“Last night...” she started. Nino’s heart wrenched. What was she going to tell him?
“Mom, I...” Nino hurriedly said, but she stopped him mid-way.
“There is nothing between you two, right?”
Those words were like a knife stabbing into Nino’s heart. And by the way Ohno stopped still, he knew Ohno felt the same way.
“Mom,” He pleaded, but his mom didn’t look at him, not in his eyes. She kept staring at the ceiling, her face didn’t show any emotion, and she didn’t let Nino say anything more.
“Tell me there is nothing between you two.” She repeated, and this time, her eyes were closed, as if she refused to hear any other replies beside that one.
Nino’s tears rolled down. It wasn’t’ true - it couldn’t be true. He wanted to shout, to let her know that no, they really loved each other and there was something that was both miracle and happiness between them, but he couldn’t utter a word. He knew Ohno was just as miserable as him, the older boy stood still at his spot, also waiting for Nino’s answer. But what else could he do? He loved his mom the most in this world. Since his dad left, there was only the two of them together for years. There was this only thing he couldn’t scarify for his love, it was his mother... He and his mom were so closed to each other, he just couldn’t...
He turned to Ohno, the other boy’s face looked pale, but Ohno didn’t look at his eyes. Ohno’s hands clutched into fists as Ohno bit his lower lip tightly it almost bleed, and that hurt Nino even more. But Ohno didn’t try to hold Nino back. Ohno was giving him all the right to make the decision.
And finally, even though each word was killing him inside, he told his mom with tears burning his eyes.
“Yes... There is nothing between us.”
