Chapter 11
Ohno didn’t know how long he had been staying at the studio.
He couldn’t concentrate on his work. Although tomorrow was the deadline for their school’s next exhibition and Ohno got a very important picture he had to finish, he just had no heart to do anything. He sat still at his spot, stared at nothing in particular while replaying that scene inside his mind.
“There is nothing between us.”
The words still hurt him so bad that it was hard to breath, and even though Ohno could clearly understand why Nino had said so, he just couldn’t stop thinking about it. Everything in their life was in a mess right now. And now Ohno couldn’t help but ask himself countless time, why did they have to face this reality? Why didn’t let them stay in their dream a little longer, where they could be together and be happy all the time? Why did everything happen just too sudden? He still hadn’t been prepared, he had never wanted it to be this way...
Ever since that day, their parents became really strict. They watched over Nino and Ohno every minute. And although they didn’t follow them to school, Ohno knew his Dad had someone for following him and reporting everything he did at school to his Dad. Because once he had talked to Nino in their usual place at the terrace, he had hold Nino’s hand like a way to soothe their pain - that night his Dad called him out and made him promise not to touch Nino again. He had protested, but when he remembered the incident of their Mom, he could only wipe his tingling tears angrily and nodded.
So he missed Nino so much his heart barely could take it. Since that day, they didn’t stay in the same room anymore. Another room was prepared downstairs for Ohno, far away from Nino’s, and if they wanted to meet each other, they had to cross their parents’ room. Ohno could tell they were always watched, so a chance for him to meet Nino alone was close to impossible, let aside touch him or kiss him or just simply felt his warmth all around him.
He suddenly felt so tired he wanted to cry.
What did they do wrong to deserve this? He asked himself countless time but he got no answer each time. Why did they have to be stepbrother? Why couldn’t they be like other boys, meet each other and fall in love and...\
His thoughts were cut off by a voice outside.
“Ohno-san?” Sho called him and he turned to the threshold and saw Sho standing there with an umbrella on his hand. “Want to go home together? It’s raining heavily outside!”
“Ah... I...” Ohno almost replied that he would go back together with Nino, but he suddenly remembered that they weren’t allowed to be so close anymore. “...Okay, I don’t have an umbrella anyway.”
“Great,” Sho beamed at him as he opened the door widely. “So gather your stuff. It’s late already!”
-----------------
Nino had just finished his practice at the music club. It was raining outside, and he remembered that Ohno didn’t take his umbrella with him today. So he hurriedly gathered his notes and pushed them into his bag, then he took his umbrella as he ran towards the studio with a rush.
They couldn’t be close, but because they were brother - and it was raining, and Ohno could catch a cold if he went home without an umbrella - so they could go home together, right?
The feeling that he was going to meet Ohno and talk to the other boy made Nino’s heart fluttered, in an unexplainable way. He ran faster. He missed the other boy so much that it hurt... Lately they didn’t have a chance to talk to each other, didn’t have a chance to be alone. Even his cellphone was taken by their Dad, so they couldn’t contact each other even though they were in the same house. Sometimes he could only look at Ohno walking across the lobby, or see Ohno entered the home, but he couldn’t get any closer more than that- he was scared that something like that night would happen again.
He had just realized he had been missing Ohno too much it was almost unbearable.
When he reached the studio, however, Ohno wasn’t there. Maybe Ohno was waiting for him at the front gate, he thought when he turned his direction. It was raining dogs and cats and Ohno couldn’t go home without him...
Or he thought so.
When he reached the front gate he saw Ohno walking out of the school. Nino was about to call Ohno as he saw another person with Ohno and they were talking happily.
Sakurai.
He didn’t know where this burning feeling inside him came from, but seeing Ohno together with Sho like this made him feel so stupid.
And here I’m missing him like crazy. He thought bitterly. Of course, Ohno had his friends and someone who liked him and would spend time with him... Someone to whom loving Ohno wasn’t a taboo. Someone who could walk side by side with Ohno without worrying that they would get caught. Someone that could make Ohno feel happier, easier compared to when he was with Nino.
Someone that wasn’t Nino.
Nino didn’t realize that tears had burned his eyes again. He wiped it away angrily. He had been crying for Ohno too much these days it started to get annoying. And now Ohno looked like he wasn’t affected... What happened to the determination of Ohno? What happened about the promise that he would protect Nino no matter what? What happened to the love they had?
Did Ohno still love him, or now Ohno thought it was better to go with someone else?
The thoughts squirming inside Nino’s mind refused to get out, all he could do was stand still and stare at their backs until they disappeared into the rain. Nino suddenly felt so stupid. He didn’t even want to go home. He was here because he thought he could meet Ohno. But meeting Ohno like this was not in his expectation.
Maybe he better stayed at school until it stopped raining.
-------------------------------
When Nino reached home that day, it was really late already. His mom was waiting for him, she looked genuinely worried when he saw him entered the house with soaking wet.
“Where is your umbrella?” She asked as he took out his coat and threw it aside.
Nino just shook his head.
“I forgot.”
He lied. But he didn’t want his mom to know that he had thrown away his umbrella because of his anger, and then it was blown away by the strong wind. He had to wait for the rain to stop so he could’ve gone back home safely, but because it was raining like there was no tomorrow, he had to run as fast as possible towards his home.
“I’m going upstairs,” He announced to his mom after he changed into dry clothes, didn’t really have heart to eat anything. All he wanted now was to roll into his bed and had his blanket around him and slept dreamlessly. But his mom forced him to eat at least something or she said he would have got sick, so finally he ate some bread -bored- and tried to chew as fast as possible.
When he almost finished his meal, he saw Ohno walked out from his room. When Ohno saw Nino there, his eyes lightened up in a way that it could warm Nino from his core. But not now. Now, he was really mad at Ohno, even though he couldn’t explain this but the jealousy inside him couldn’t be dissipated.
“You’re late,” Ohno said, and Nino noticed their mom glanced at Ohno for a second before turned away from the boys. Nino sighed tiredly. Since when they were watched everywhere like this, even in their own house?
“Yeah.” Was all Nino came up with. He didn’t have anything to say, not when they were in front of a parent.
“Was it the music club?” Ohno asked, as if the other boy tried to carry on the conversation so he wouldn’t have to return to his room too soon. Nino was glad Ohno did, because Nino wanted him to stay a little longer too, despite the fact that he was mad at Ohno.
“Yeah.” Nino shrugged again. His cold attitude confused Ohno as the other boy titled his head quietly.
“What’s wrong?” He asked, but Nino didn’t have a chance to answer. Their Dad walked out from his room and when he saw them talking, he called Ohno.
“I need your help,” Dad said, but Nino knew better. They were just trying to make sure Nino and Ohno wouldn’t contact much so their ‘weird feeling’ would disappear and they would once again become good children.
“Hai,” Ohno sighed in frustration and he followed his Dad. Nino stayed at his seat, feeling anger and frustration and tiredness ate him up from inside. Suddenly, everything was too tough that he couldn’t handle it anymore. He felt like everything was stumbling down, even their family, even his heart.
So he buried his face to his fold arms tiredly, a single tear rolled down in frustration, but he didn’t know what to do anymore.
That night, he stayed awake late. He couldn’t sleep. Everything rolled in his mind, the memories since the first day he saw Ohno came back mercilessly. Even though it hurt right now, they couldn’t be together. However, those memories were priceless that could soothe Nino’s pain. He closed his eyes, tried to ignore the tears tingling there, tried to come up with any solution for their situation.
Or he really had to give up on Ohno?
Was it that easy?
Suddenly he heard movements. The door was opened quietly he almost didn’t notice, but then a person slipped into his room and he realized who it was immediately. Ohno closed the door behind him without any sound, and he reached Nino’s bed in no time although there was no light in the room. Ohno was too familiar with this room after all. Nino was caught off guard when he felt Ohno’s arms around him, hugging him tightly that it was hard to breathe.
But Nino didn’t complain, not at all. His arms automatically reached out to wrap around Ohno. The warmth of Ohno surrounded him welcomingly, and Nino pulled Ohno closer until there was no gap between them.
They breathed in each other’s scent, Nino could feel his hand shaking from the sudden emotion. He buried his face to Ohno’s neck, breathed in Ohno’s familiar scent; he finally could take back his calmness again.
“I miss you,” Ohno whispered, his words were soundless, only Nino could hear it. He kissed Nino’s temples gently, then his nose and his eyes, and his hand roamed on Nino’s skin hungrily.
“Me too,” Nino admitted. Being with Ohno like this was wonderful, and once he realized it, he also realized how miserable he was the last few weeks when Ohno was not around him - how life was suffocating and how he couldn’t really be happy.
Ohno’s hand sneaked under Nino’s pajama, his hand touched Nino’s skin in a pleasing way. Nino’s breath caught in his throat but he didn’t dare to make any sound. Their parents could wake up at any time and it would be another disaster of their life.
“This is dangerous.” Nino said, his eyes closed when Ohno kissed his cheeks.
“I know,” Ohno whispered into his ear but he didn’t stop. “But I can’t stand it. I can’t, Kazu.”
Nino looked at Ohno, ’s eyes. There was something deep inside that reflected Ohno’s pain, and Nino’s heart ached. How could he even think that Ohno’s love had changed?
“I can’t pretend that nothing happened between us,” Ohno shook his head, he closed his eyes tiredly “I can’t, Kazu. I love you. I know that love exists. Please don’t make me pretend that I don’t love you. I can’t!”
Nino’s tear came back in his eyes. He pulled Ohno’s head down to kiss him on his lips. Ohno immediately kissed Nino back, desperately, like there was no tomorrow for both of them. They lingered in the kiss for few minutes before Nino pushed back.
“I love you too,” Nino said inaudibly, his hand caressed Ohno’s cheek “I don’t want to forget it either.”
“Then let’s fight for our love,” Ohno decided. He kissed Nino’s hand gently. “I know your mother might hate this, but...”
“She would never accept...” Nino cried “Why can’t we be like normal couple? Why does it have to be so hard for us?”
Nino knew Ohno was crying too, because when Ohno was kissing him again, his tear wetting Nino’s hair.
“I will fight for you,” Ohno hold Nino’s hand tightly in his, he leaned down to put kisses on Nino’s forehead “I will never give up on you.”
