Chapter 12

Ohno was going to graduate soon.

He would leave this school and apply for university, and that meant they wouldn’t go to the same school anymore. Nino hadn’t had chance to ask Ohno for which University he was going to apply recently, though he assumed Ohno would find an Art-related one. It would suite him the most and it would be where his talent was going to shine.

However, the thought that Ohno was going to leave the school wasn’t welcoming at all. Now, although their parents were loosening a little bit, they still barely had time for each other at home. And in those precious moments at school when they made sure no one was looking, they could hold each other’s hand for a few minutes before letting go and come back to their own activities. Those small moments were Nino’s source of energy every day. And now he would lose it right after Ohno’s graduation.

The thought bothered Nino’s mind every day until he found it so annoying that he had to look for Ohno to ask for the answer.

However, he couldn’t find Ohno anywhere today, since the morning when he woke up Ohno had already left home. He was nowhere to be seen at the school either. Nino kept wondering about Ohno’s whereabouts when he wandered around the lobby of Ohno’s classroom. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t notice until he bumped into Sho who was walking to the opposite direction.
“Ouch,” Sho whimpered. “It hurt!”
“Sorry,” Nino said, not at all meant it “I wasn’t looking.”
“I can see that,” Sho complained, then he turned around to walk away. But Nino stopped him before he could leave. Maybe Sho knew something, and although Nino didn’t like the idea, he still wanted to give it a try.
“Do you see Satoshi anywhere?”
“Eh?” Sho turned around and looked at Nino, surprised “You don’t know?”
“No,” Nino’s frown deepened. Sho knew where Ohno was and Nino didn’t? That was weird. And that wasn’t pleasant either. “Where is he?”
“He went to Tokyo today,” Sho answered honestly “To check out the University he’s going to apply to.”
“What??” Nino rolled his eyes in disbelief. Ohno was going to leave this town and didn’t even bother to tell him? And, what? Tokyo Art University?! “He’s going to apply to Tokyo University??”
“Yes,” Sho nodded, bewildered “He didn’t tell you?”
“He didn’t tell me anything!” Nino grinded his teeth. What was that mean? Now Ohno not only left the school, but also left home?

That realization suddenly hit Nino, he found himself in a daze with sudden emotions and questions rolling inside him.

It was going to be far away. Tokyo was too far away from here. Nino didn’t even know how to get there. Ohno would be so out of reach, and whenever he missed Ohno, he didn’t have a chance to even just look at the other...

It was terribly frustrating. Ohno didn’t tell him this either - it was suffocating for Nino, he felt all of his energy had left him in that moment. Nino couldn’t move any of his limbs so he stood still at his spot  minutes later despite of the fact that Sho already left. He tried to breathe in to calm himself down, but the pain inside his chest couldn’t subside. The anger towards Ohno raised, and suddenly everything seemed so terrible that he decided he didn’t want to try anymore.

Ohno had said he would’ve fought for Nino, hadn’t he? How could he fight for their love from so far away? How could he make sure that Ohno wouldn’t meet other girls- other guys out there and forgot Nino? After all, Nino was just a little boy in a small country and he had nothing for Ohno to love him...

Nino was drowned into those negative thoughts for the rest of the day. Aiba was the only one who noticed Nino’s crestfallen face, but he didn’t dare to ask. Nino was always in the bad mood these days since he was separated with Ohno. Even Aiba himself could only make Nino smile sometimes, mostly it wasn’t Nino’s real smile, not anymore. Most of the day Nino usually sulked and was always distracted by his thoughts.

When Nino came home that day, apparently, Ohno hadn’t come back yet. Their parents looked no surprise or worry so Nino guessed they both knew where Ohno was. The only one who didn’t know was Nino. And the realization of that fact only worsened Nino’s mood. He locked himself in his room until midnight, focused on practicing his guitar. When his fingers hurt, he had to put it aside or he would get wounds on his point finger. He had just laid down on his bed as he heard movements downstairs. He immediately rushed out of his room and ran down, to see Ohno standing at the threshold while the boy was taking off his coat.

“I’m home,” Ohno said quietly when he saw Nino. Both their parents were sleeping so Ohno didn’t want to disturb them. Nino remained at his spot and stared at Ohno, he was at a loss for words. Although he had prepared many questions for Ohno once the boy came home, now everything suddenly disappeared and he found his mind totally blank. So he just looked as Ohno took off his shoes and came to the kitchen to take a bottle of water.
“How was your day?” Ohno, noticed Nino’s quietness, asked softly.
Nino thought Ohno must have been kidding with him. It wasn’t a question Ohno could ask Nino after abandoned him all day. So he didn’t answer, just kept staring at Ohno with burning eyes, and he looked clearly angry.
“Hey, Kazu,” Ohno sighed when he heard no response from Nino. He turned and when he saw Nino, he added quietly “I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Nino said, his lips tightened. His voice was kept low, but he still sounded dangerous. Ohno should’ve had a great reason for this.
“For leaving without telling you.” Ohno shook his head “I was about to tell you but you slept early yesterday...”
“Is there anything else?” Nino cut Ohno off. It wasn’t the most important thing -Ohno leaving without telling Nino today- right now. The most important thing was the fact that Ohno was going to leave this home, leave Nino alone. Soon.
“I...” Ohno bit his lips. He looked worried, as if he didn’t want to say it if he could. However, he looked at Nino’s eyes and he knew Nino figured out everything and Nino was really angry, he had no choice but to tell the truth. “I’m leaving home for university.”
“When?” Nino’s voice sounded muffed. He had tried to keep it from wavering, but he failed. He could feel something tightened his heart in a most painful way when Ohno looked away from his eyes, refused to look at him when he said quietly.
“This October.”
“Two more months?” Nino couldn’t help but feel the fear raising inside him. It was too close. It was too soon. How many times could they be together until that day came?
“Why?” Nino could hear his voice ask. He didn’t even know what to say anymore.
“Kazu,” Ohno took a step closer to Nino, be careful not making too much noise. He pleaded, desperate “Kazu, you have to trust me.”
“You ask me to trust you,” Nino swallowed hard, was Ohno kidding with him? “while you are not telling me anything?”
“Kazu, I...”
“Why?” Nino closed his eyes tiredly. This would never end, this sadness that always tightened their lives, this despair that had been eating Nino up from that day  “Why do you have to leave?”
“I have a plan,” Ohno whispered “But I can’t tell you now. We can talk later.”
“We can talk now!” Nino grinded his teeth “Seriously, Satoshi, you can’t avoid...”
“Shhhh!!” Ohno’s hand covered Nino’s mouth hastily “I promise I will tell you. But not now. Not here. Please?”
“But...” Nino stubbornly shook Ohno’s hand out of his mouth, but when he saw Ohno’s pleading eyes and the tiredness inside them, his anger suddenly subsided. He knew Ohno was also bearing this. He knew they were both not happy with this... but why, couldn’t it be a better way?

Why did Ohno have to leave? Nino didn’t understand at all.

“Please,” Ohno put his head onto Nino’s shoulder for a second before he stepped back “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“But...!” Nino was about to protest when Ohno quickly peck Nino’s lips. And with that, Nino’s anger had somehow gone away, left the butterflies in his stomach. Although he still wanted to know everything so desperately, he let himself believe in Ohno one more time. If the older boy had promised, he would have done it, Nino reminded himself. Ohno was a reliable boy, after all.

Ohno smiled softly at Nino when he saw the younger’s blushed cheeks. He touched Nino’s cheek gently as a way to say goodnight, then he returned to his room. Nino, after a moment of hesitation, agreed that talking and flirting in front of their parents’ room wasn’t a great idea after all, finally he also returned to his room and tiredly laid down, let Ohno’s peck on his lips lure him into a dreamless sleep that night.
