Chapter 5
Like every single lunch break that they had spent together, Nino and Ohno were up on the terrace. Nino was doing some magic tricks which he refused to show to Ohno, claiming that he had yet to master them. Thus, Ohno began to doodle instead of staring at Nino’s back.
When Ohno was a child, a friend showed him his drawing of a manga character that both of them loved. Ohno was confident that he could definitely draw as well, if not better, and so he started drawing. The more he drew, the more he was immersed into the world of papers, pencils, charcoal, and colors. He would draw whenever he needed time to think, to relax or just to enjoy his own company. Ohno drew whatever he found exciting, and he colored the way he wanted. He always saw different colors in things - perhaps it was his imagination when he painted the world according to his own color scheme, and only he could see things that way. For instance, when he raised his head to look at Nino who was back facing him, he saw yellow. A light yellow which made him feel nostalgic and brought warm feelings to him. The color of sunlight, of flowers. The color which was bright, nice and welcoming. It was as though this color in had brought him back from feeling lost. It was as though his wound had healed and the pain inside his chest had faded away.
Just as he had gotten bored with drawing random things and sketching out Nino’s figure, his phone rang. Ohno pulled it out from his pocket with Nino looking at him curiously. He rarely had someone call him, and never had a call since Nino met him. He didn’t hang out with many people, and he didn’t give them his number either. It wasn’t that he felt uncomfortable, but he didn’t feel the need to exchange numbers with them.
He saw the number that was calling him on the phone screen and froze. His heart started to beat in the same way as a month ago. He could never forget, even though he had deleted the caller’s name in an effort to forget that person. The ringing continued, making him feel more uneasy and anxious. Somehow, his heart still fluttered. He wasn’t surprised - he knew that the feeling was still lingering in his heart - however he hadn’t expected himself to react this way. Excitement, hope… was flowing back altogether.
He flipped open his phone and tried not to look at Nino’s questionable eyes; he answered the call with a low voice that could barely be heard by Nino, despite Nino sitting beside him. He stood up and walked away, not wanting Nino to hear this conversation, no matter how it would become.
“Moshi moshi?” He breathed into the mouthpiece.
“Moshi moshi… Satoshi? Eh… I have just come to Osaka this morning,” the other boy said softly. “Do you have free time this afternoon? Can we go out for a drink?”
“What? You… are here? But, I…” Ohno was stunned with the sudden suggestion and he didn’t quite know what to do. Even though his mind repeatedly shouted “don’t”, he still found himself answering automatically, “Oh…okay. I’ll meet you then.”
“That’s great!” The other boy sighed in relief, “I thought you never wanted to see me again.”
“It’s not true!” Ohno replied a little too defensively. “So… ja ne.”. His heartbeat slowed as he hung up the phone. Wait, he frowned. It was only after he had accepted the invitation that he remembered his promise to Nino to go to his house together after class. Nino had wanted to show him his collections of games and had insisted that he should visit his house for days. Ohno stared into space, saddled with feelings of both regret and excitement. It was only when Nino approached him that Ohno blinked and came back to reality.
“What’s wrong?” Nino asked, clearly concerned with his friend.
“Eh? No, nothing. It’s just… my friend.”
“So, why is your face so red?” Nino pointed out with a strange harsh voice.
“I… actually, it’s my ex-boyfriend,” Ohno admitted. He knew he couldn’t lie to Nino, the boy could read him better than himself.
“Your… what?” Nino gasped, staring at Ohno “You never mention about him before!”
“You have never asked,” Ohno shrugged “But, I think it’s not necessary to tell you since it’s… it’s over now.”
“So…” Nino said quietly after a few minutes of silence. “You two broke up?”
“Yes” Ohno blinked “That’s why I called him my ex-boyfriend”
“Do you still love him?” The question slipped out of Nino’s mouth faster than he could stop himself, and he felt stupid to ask such a question. It was too personal and he wouldn’t be surprised if Ohno didn’t want to answer. But Nino had to know. He wanted to know. There was something within him wanting to burst out and demanded to know everything about this boy whom Ohno had loved.
“I don’t know…” Ohno’s eyes were wavering. “I mean… we’re together for such a long time. It’s hard to end everything and start a new life without each other, you know. But, he has found his true love… and I had no choice but to let him go…”
“Ohchan…” Nino bit his lips, worried. He knew he had asked a forbidden question.
“He’s my childhood friend,” Ohno cut him off, seemingly lost in his thoughts. “We have been friend for years, until we found out that… we didn’t like girls. We preferred guys instead. And more than that, we loved each other. So… when we decided to be together… we promised that we would be together forever…” Ohno didn’t know that the feeling of losing that person still hurt so much, and his eyes watered. Strangely, Nino felt his heart starting to hurt as he stared at Ohno, his hand subconsciously found its way to Ohno’s shoulder.
“But, time changed everything. One day, he told me that he had found someone… someone that he loved more than himself. He said that he still loved me though, but he wanted to be with him. I knew that he was telling the truth - His eyes sparkled so happily when he talked about the one he loved. It was that happiness that I could never give.”
“Ohchan…” was all Nino could manage to say. Ohno was trembling slightly and tears trailed down his chubby cheeks. Nino stepped closer to the older boy and stretched out his arms, pulling him into a tight hug. Seeing Ohno like this made Nino feel deeply hurt. He tightened his embrace, whispering against Ohno’s ear, “Ohchan…”.
“I must let him go. I had no other choice, since he loved him so much. I just… couldn’t face the fact that I have no one beside me now… I was lonely, Nino, so I changed school, changed friends… I don’t want to remember… that…that I’m totally alone in this world.”
“No,” Nino brushed one hand through Ohno’s hair as he whispered, the other hand rubbing the Ohno’s back soothingly in an effort to comfort him. “You’re not alone. You have me now…”
Ohno cried hard. He had never told anyone about this before. It was his secret, a secret that he wanted to bury deep inside his heart forever. He hadn’t wanted to share his true feelings with anyone. He always kept it within himself and even though he didn’t realize it, the painful memories haunted him every single day no matter how hard he had tried to forget. When he thought that he had finally buried the sadness in his heart, all the memories flowed back to him as if it was just yesterday. When he told Nino all of this, the tears which he had kept for so long had finally found their exit.
The warmth that radiated from Nino’s small body calmed Ohno after a while. He realized that he was holding onto Nino with all his strength, and his tears made a wet patch on the younger boy’s shoulder. He didn’t know that Nino’s arms could alleviate his tired heart and now he felt an unexplainable sense of relief gently spreading throughout his body. He didn’t usually relied on others’ arms to calm himself, since he had never lost his temper or his calmness. He showed his smiling face to everyone and kept the painful one in his heart. But now that he had shared his sorrows with Nino, his hurt seemed to lessen. He felt a lot warmer than when he was crying alone in his room. Nino arms were holding him tightly, comforting and protecting him.
------------------------------------------
Nino held Ohno tighter; his hand rubbing Ohno’s back gently as the older boy’s sobs slowly subsided. They stayed like that for a while. Nino ran his fingers through Ohno’s hair softly as he felt the older boy relaxing in his embrace. Questions started to build up in his mind and it was hard for him to not ask Ohno, since he badly wanted to know. But he knew that Ohno definitely didn’t want to talk about it right now. So he wondered, Who was that boy who had hurt Ohno so much?
Why doesn’t he know how to treasure Ohno?
If it was Nino, he surely wouldn’t let this boy go.
“Sorry,” Ohno said suddenly, his voice hoarse from crying. “I…shouldn’t bother you with it…”
“Stop saying that,” Nino whispered. “I’m here for you whenever you need someone, so don’t worry.”
Ohno smiled, and Nino felt his heart lightened.
“I don’t know why I’m telling you this,” Ohno continued. “But… I thought I was over him already…”
Nino stared at Ohno, hope was evident in his brown eyes that he was waiting for Ohno to continue.
“He called me,” Ohno bit his lip. “And... he asked me out to meet him.”
Nino couldn’t hide the disappointment on his face, and his hand left Ohno’s shoulder and flopped lifelessly to his side.
Ohno raised his head to look at Nino, his eyes sad and desperate. “I… I couldn’t refuse him…”
All of a sudden, Nino wanted to hold Ohno back, his hand aching to reach out to take the older boy’s hand, and to tell him that he didn’t want him to go. Nino didn’t want Ohno to meet that boy. It’s pointless, isn’t it? They had broken up, he is just an ex-boyfriend, so why is it so important for Ohno to meet him? Isn’t it happier that they both go to Nino’s home together - like they had intended to? Isn’t it happier for Ohno to ignore that guy, and to spend time with Nino and see his new magic trick? Isn’t this better for Ohno’s sake?
“I think… I still... I just… couldn’t forget him completely, even though…”
Ohno didn’t finish his sentence and Nino wondered if Ohno had wanted to say something more.
“Sorry Nino… Could I go your house another day? I’m so sorry…” Ohno finally said, his eyes worried and he frowned slightly.
Nino’s heart sank in disappointment and he looked away. He forced a smile at a worried Ohno, and he automatically answered, “That’s okay, Ohchan. You still want to meet him, right? Don’t worry, just… go.”
He didn’t know where his calm voice came from, and he was confused with the sudden hurt in his heart. He turned around and waved slightly before returning to his class, even though the bell had yet to ring. He didn’t want to stay there any longer, because Ohno would definitely see that his eyes were starting to water.
“See you later, Ohno-san.”
The words slipped out of his mouth before he realized that he had just called Ohno by his family name and he was sure that Ohno didn’t like it. The older boy had told him before to keep calling him ‘Ohchan’, because he had liked that nickname and that no one else had called him that. The nick name made they feel being close with each other. Even though Nino didn’t intend to, he ignored it and walked away.
Anyway, it’s not important to Ohno, right? It was not important whether Nino called him ‘Ohchan’ or ‘Ohno-san’.
So what does that boy call him, Nino wondered. Are there any better nicknames? Or perhaps they are so close that they called each other by their first names… Like Satoshi? Nino chuckled sarcastically.
Afterall, I have only met him for a month.
