She was always The Woman to him, even after, especially after. His eyes would close briefly, always briefly, and her face would flash into his mind; hair framing the eyes as she stood over him, coat flapping about her legs. Those red lips of hers would curl up into a grin, a flush would steal over those sharp cheekbones, and he would be lying on the floor, hands grasping for some foundation. He would always come up empty.
She was always The Woman, but he never spoke of her. She had left, he knew, run off somewhere to scheme her way to fame (it wasn’t scheming, not really, he knew that, but it felt like cheating to admit it). It was easier this way, he would tell himself, the ice slipping through his veins, jaw clenched at the sudden frenzy of his heart. It was always easier this way.
She was always The Woman, and he wondered sometimes if she thought of him (he knew she didn’t; she had beaten him, and what mystery was there left in a trounced consulting
