Family History: Eric Derringer was born as the eldest of two sons to Maria and James Derringer. He worked as a mechanic in a garage; younger brother Matthew attends Stanford and like the rest of the Derringers, has no history of mental illnesses.
Life History: Eric’s life history is similar to his little brother Matthew’s. He grew up with a fairly stable family and enjoyed a close relationship with his parents, particularly his father, James. He tended to do decently in school, not with the grades like his little brother, and graduated; instead of attending college, he chose to take a more hand’s on approach and work in the garage as a mechanic. At 26, Eric broke several fingers on his hand on the job and while having it treated, met a nurse called Carmen. Deciding not to beat around the bush, he asked her out and while it at first was casual - pretty much glorified fuck buddies while they had other flings - it eventually grew to the point where he was over at her place more than his own apartment. Six months later, he moved in permanently and set up shop. They briefly talked about marriage but Carmen seemed comfortable with just living together and Eric was fine with that too, although he privately would’ve liked eventually to get married. During this time he’d been out of contact with Matthew and while he seemed to be happy with it that way, wanting to be close to his brother was stewing under the surface.
But Eric still had his family, and his dad was there all the way, and so he thought he was doing pretty well for himself.
Things started off normally, if awkwardly, when Matthew and his girlfriend Jennifer flew in from California. With Carmen as his support, Eric tried to be more supportive of his brother for a change, but was brushed off. The dinner went well, Matthew announcing his engagement. However, when the family left the restaurant, James suffered a massive stroke in the parking lot and it was up in the air if he would make it. Eric took it badly, growing more messed up and distraught over the days, unable to figure out why a healthy man would go down like, and began to buy into the delusion that it had to be caused by something else. In fact, everything had to be caused by something he couldn’t explain normally, and it was then he latched onto the idea of the “djinn”. Convinced he has to hunt it and save his family - and an unknown number of others - he tried to raid his family’s house for silver and was caught in the act by his little brother…who ended up coming for the ride.
Although only for so far: having second thoughts, Eric dumped Matthew in some Podunk middle of nowhere town and went to “hunt” the djinn himself. It’s not entirely known what happened: Eric was found bleeding heavily from a knife-wound to the chest, leaving his wallet and a trail of blood that Matthew would track later. He was admitted to a local hospital and, after observation, was committed to Landels Institute after he made a sufficient recovery from the stabbing. The day before he was transferred, he carved himself out a prison tattoo version fo what he claimed was a “devil’s trap”…which didn’t exactly work in his favor and just sealed the deal with his transfer.
Medical History: At four years-old, he was treated for minor smoke inhalation. Around sixteen he was admitted to ER for a dislocated shoulder. At 26; broke four fingers on his right hand from working in the garage on a 1965 Mustang Fastback. A few months ago, Eric’s behavior became increasingly erratic around the time his father James was hospitalized for a stroke after a birthday dinner for Maria. Over the course of the next few days, Eric began to believe it was all caused by a “djinn” and that it was also responsible for the missing people across the state. Locating the man he claimed was a djinn, Eric received a stab wound to chest with silver knife dipped in lamb’s blood; self-inflicted.
Current Status: Socializes well, willing to interact with female and male patients. Had two incidents: one on Institute grounds, the other in Doyleton, both aggressive. Has a habit of trying to flirt with the female staff, may need be swapped for a male nurse. Has been making little progress with his therapist, Makiko Kisugi; she suggested sedation for the incident in Doyleton.
Dean's managed to catch bits and pieces of who the Institute claims he is. It generally seems to follow his experience when he was attacked by a djinn "What Is And Should Never Be".
>> "Eric" apparently suffered a breakdown, resulting in trying to stab himself in the chest. Eric's doctor, Kisugi Makiko, suggested part of it was taking his dad's death, which he personally witnessed, hard, as well as a generally low sense of self-worth.
>> Instead of taking Sam/"Matthew" with him to hunt the djinn, Dean instead left him in some podunk, middle of nowhere town. The story is still essentially the same for Dean, in that he still tried to hunt down the "monster" (in reality a tattooed hobo - nice).
>> His mom's still alive and was upset about his breakdown. Eric was sent to Landels to rehabilitate after he recovered from his attempted suicide attempt. His dad's still dead, like in the djinn's attack.
>> Eric supposedly had a dog called "Christo", though this was simply Dean's attempt to determine if Kisugi was a demon.
>> As a patient, Eric's known for being unruly and acting out. He picked a fight with another patient in Doyleton, upset the store owner Callahan, stole, and also got drunk. Sedated once.
>> Makiko suggested insanity could run in the family, showing she's aware Sam/Matthew is in Landels. She also seems to know in some extent Dean's time limit of a year.
>> Alastair/Alexander visit: Alexander clearly believes in Eric, saying he doesn't belong in Landels. He's from something called "Lily Inc", and seems to be a way out of the Institute. Lily Inc is also keeping tabs on his little brother.
>> Alexander has written proof that Dean's signed himself over in a year's time, producing a contract signed by an Eric Derringer in Dean's handwriting.
>> Alexander mentions a higher calling, not as the garage monkey Eric was prior to Landels. Also alludes to Sam possibly having changed somehow. During the visitor shift, Dean was close enough to see Alexander's eyes turn white. It happened so fast he's not sure if he saw it or not though. Alexander did pass the Christo test though, indicating he's either not a demon or insanely high level enough not to
>> Rick likes monster truck rallies, working on cars, drinking, sleeping around for fun, and but also watching Dr. Sexy M.D (the one show he can't watch with his girlfriend Carmen, since she's a nurse).
>> "Rick" has a drinking problem and drinks heavily - according to Sam and Dean as "Matt" and "Rick" in the Real Life event, Matt had to bust out Rick multiple times and post bail. Rick's racked up a few DUIs.
