My favorite book ever. I think guilt, innocence and the stress of monogamous fidelity is the "heaviness" that Kundera is speaking about. It's tough for the surgeon dude to reconcile his previously free and careless promiscuity with the feelings he has for Teresa. I don't know if you've gotten there yet, but I think I remember that she starts becoming self-destructive over him having sex with everybody. And a lot has to do with the sex toy/bowler hat but I don't remember what that's about. gl;hf
