SMILE-Rock talk ahead.

Last night, I went to see Brian Wilson on the last night of his SMILE tour. Smile was his unfinished follow up (of sorts) to Pet Sounds (One of the best records evah!!) It was an amazing show. The crowd was fascinating, a mix of Beach Boys fans and then the nerdy diehard Brian Wilson followers. The average age was about 45. When we first sat down I ( Read more... )

I have the Smile album; doodle got it for me for my birthday. I have to agree with you regarding the musical composition. Just exciting and innovative. Brian's voice isn't what it once was, but that's not a surprise considering.

G-d Only Knows is possiby my favorite angst song ever.

Yeah, I actually wrote something about Brian's voice and then erased it, cause I felt bad. heh. His range and ability to hold a note is definnitely diminished, but when you consider how . . . damaged. . . he was, it's pretty amazing.

"God Only Knows" is the song that made me love The Beach Boys. Poor Carl.

Do you have the CD? Would you recommend it? I was a bit dubious of his voice, too. I've seen him on a few TV shows and his voice was weak and that look on his face was enough to turn the channel. I've heard bits and pieces of SMILE and it sounds lke Pet Sounds, Pt 2.

Yeah, his voice is defiinitely an issue, but he has surrounded himself with folks who can carry the vocals and seem committed to his vision. And it's really about the vision. You've probably heard most of the stuff on SMILE, here it's interesting to hear it all together and remixed. I'm really enjoying it. It took a few listens before I really got into it. Yeah, it is like Pet Sounds II plus more wacky psychadelic stuff.

How fun!

"Sloop John B" is my favorite Beach Boys song ever. It's my Guaranteed to Make You Feel Better When Things Are Crappy song. :)
