Chapter 11: Thirteen

Oct 05, 2006 01:30

Chapter Summary:
Pi brought Akanishi Kazumi along for one of his secret visits when she was 13 years old.
Who did they visit? What will happen after this?
After this chapter, the story will start to (T T)

----

It rained that fateful day too.

Pi drove and I sat next to him in the car. It was a misty day in late autumn.
Pi played his favourite selection of oldies in his car

That day, I just broke up with Uehara after a big quarrel. Just as I was fretting about who I should to whine to, Pi’s call came in. He called to enquire about my dress size because he saw a sweater that suited me in one of the fashion catalogues.

I wanted company, and Pi didn’t mind bringing me along for his trip. Thus I got on his car and narrated the entire story to him as he drove.

When my anger subsided, I finally realised Pi was heading to Papa’s birthplace, Chiba.
“Pi, where are you going to in Chiba?”
“Visit a friend.”
“Does Papa know that person?”
“Yes” Pi replied as he skillfully maneuvered the car out of the heavy traffic
“Actually, Kazumi had seen him too.”
“Me?”
“But you might not remember. You were only a few months old then.” Then he smiled, “But it was so strange, you did seem like you understood his words. You kept looking at that person, and even stretched out your hands to touch him”.

Strangely, Pi looked younger when he said that, as if he was back in his teenage years.
There was an aura between his brows, and I think that aura was ‘love’.

Unable to contain my curiousity, I asked, “Pi, you liked that person?”
“Yes”
“Girlfriend?”
“Good friend”
“But you said there were no platonic friendship between a guy and a girl.”
“Yes. I still hold on to that statement. But our case was unique”. He smiled gently, “I’m that person’s best friend. We played together and shared all of our secrets. I was most trusted by that person, but that person didn’t love me.”

What? Didn’t love Pi?!

To me then, it was unimaginable. Pi was so hot, how could anyone not fall for him?
OK, unless they were already in love with someone else.

The car passed the metropolitan boundary, went out of Tokyo and headed straight to our destination.

Papa once told me that in Chiba, there was a place that had a garden full of roses.
I finally managed to see it for myself.
More than 6000 stalks of roses bloomed in the drizzle and it was an amazing sight.
The trees looked lusciously green after the rain, and the stone steps were wet. The only sound was the splatter of raindrops against the floor.

We made our way up the steps and passed by many stone tombs. Pi seemed to know the way well, as if he had visited this place many times. As we walked further in, the scent of roses got stronger.
And then he stopped.

There was no kanji name carvings on this tombstone, as if to justify that there was indeed no need for names after death.
Only the birth and death dates were inscribed on the tombstone.

1986.02.23 ~ 2011.09.17

Rain drizzled on the shiny black tombstone and gave it a unique radiance. There was a silver ring encrusted onto the tomb.
It looked very familiar, but I couldn’t pinpoint where I saw it before.

“Pi?”
“Kazumi”. Pi said as he patted my hair softly, with tears in his eyes.

Although I was a child then, I could see that Pi was hurting deep inside his heart.

“Kazumi… Know something? You have a wonderful name”.
