So, we could be looking at some kind of Manhattan Island sized alternate universe? That's one theory that never occurred to me. Can't even think of how they did it, but considering all the other stuff they've pulled off, it's not exactly a stretch.

How's everybody doing after that last smash-up?

Does this happen often?

The smashing? Yeah, unfortunately. Every once in a while something happens and one of our resident giant monsters has a fit and a bunch of buildings get leveled.

You're new here then, I take it?

Is there a reason for these... 'fits?'

Yes. I have only recently arrived, and I'm afraid I don't know as much as I would like.

Sometimes there is - usually something somebody did to fight it - and sometimes there isn't. In this case, it was somebody trying to fight it. They managed to do some damage and it seems like it panicked. From what I hear, it was behaving pretty oddly, even for a giant injured monster.

If you've got questions I'd be more than happy to try and answer them. There's alot we don't know about this place and what's going on here, but I'll do my best.

When this is over I never want to hear the words "Alternate Universe" again!

Yeah I think I know how you feel a little. I hope it really is an alternate reality though. That implies the original universe is still intact. That might be the only reassuring thing about the whole situation!

At least you haven't run into people who arefrom an alternate version of the universe you're from.
Well... I guess they all could be considered alternates of each other, but you know what I mean.

Nope, can't say I've been through that. Didn't think it would be possible until now when, well, all the rules seem to be out the window, don't they?

I take it that's happened to you then?

Well, that theory makes sense, in a way. Considering that, throughout all of history, this certainly never happens to the Manhattan that I know, it really almost makes more sense for this to be an alternate universe than for the powers-that-be here to have changed history.

How are you faring, by the way?

They've got some major tricks up their sleeves, but altering history does sound harder to pull off than an alternate universe. Granted I've got no clue how they'd pull even that off.

I'm doing alright. I've been stuck inside more than usual though, with the new bigger crabs about the place. All the stuff I put together for the junior variety isn't really cutting it on the big guys. So I'm playing it safe until I come up with something better.

How 'bout you, Doctor?

Both are almost equally difficult, if I'm honest, but they involve rather different methods, at any rate. That doesn't change the fact that accomplishing either of those things is just a hair short of impossible - but it also doesn't change the fact that someone did accomplish it, of course.

Good plan. Those aren't creatures that I'd want to run into unprepared, and that's saying something, since I'm usually quite good at improvising. I'm sure you'll eventually be able to concoct something that'll work on that new lot, though!

Oh, I'm all right, thanks. Right as rain, fit as a fiddle - though I've never really been certain about what's right or fit about meteorological phenomena and musical instruments, but, well.... I managed to avoid that last attack, so yes, I'm doing fine.

Okay. I'm a biologist and not a physicist, but if I may speak on behalf of the scientific community at large, I would like to say "what the fuck".

Yeah. Yeah I think that about sums it up. Stephen Hawking would probably be struggling with this one. Or at least I like to think so because it makes me feel a little better about being so in the dark all the time.
