In the week or so before xmas, Al Franken wasn't on his own radio show as he was in the Middle East entertaining troops on a USO tour. And I started to think, are most of the people on these tours "stars" or are there unknown types? What kind of acts do they have on these tours? Do they ever have improv groups? I know that may not fit the usual ( Read more... )

While I enjoy your improv, I can't see the Marines I used to hang out with having a chance of getting it. They seem to be mostly the kids that beat up geeks in high school.

The military is a great place to get money from. They spend more on military bands and music than the entire National Endowment for the Arts. I'd search the web for the DOD USO stuff and see if there is a way to apply. I'm sure there are many small shows even though we only hear about known stars doing big ones.

Also, it is only the anti-war folks who really give a shit about the actual soldiers, since we are the only ones willing to critically investigate whether they should get killed for us. The Bush folks love the weapons contractors, but believe that a soldier's duty is just to die in the sand.

Hey Erik! Heard a short bit on the radio today that involved a comedian who has been entertaining the troops mention one of his big hit jokes. Something like this: "What is the [big impressive helicopter name]'s worst enemy? Answer: Iraqi sheepherders!" Of course, the radio response was deadly silence. Sounds like a tasteless joke about terrorism. Thing is, you have to have been there to realize that those helicopters are commonly used transport, and they really rile the sheep up. The comedian was so used to positive response, he kept going on describing "a moment in the life of a sheepherder" where he's got everything all under control and the sheep almost in the pen when one of those stupid copters heads over; there's the shepherd shaking his tiny fist and starting over gathering the sheep. Finally he wound down--it was funnier by then, but he really had to work it ( ... )

The other aspect that crossed my mind is that they'd probably appreciate some humor that wasn't just related to the whole, "Hey you're in the military and you're over here fighting," aspect. Some everyday relationship-based improv could be refreshing, in the context of their situation. The best improv is usually grounded in strong relationships, anyway.
