Demyx isn’t stupid.
He knew that, by being sent to Hollow Bastion to fight the Keyblade Master, he more than likely won’t return. He didn’t ask for this task; Xemnas assigned it to him. If he can defeat Sora, than maybe he really did have some sort of importance in the Superior’s plan.
After a little talk to the keybearer, the two of them, the light and the nocturne, fight to the death. Well, it can’t really be death, seeing as Demyx was never alive. Fight to the non-existence, one could say.
Demyx isn’t weak; he’s able to easily hold back the keybearer by leaping across the area, sending jets of water to attack the brunet to hold him off. He can send his water clones to hold off the brunet for seconds as he regains his stamina and fights him again.
But, over all, Demyx knew he was just a sacrifice; he was just holding back the keybearer so more heartless could assemble, and could be hearts in Xemnas’s master plan. But still, he fights on.
So, when he falls back, and his sitar disappears, his eyes are wide in horror. He already knew that he was going to fade away, back into the darkness -he just wanted to prolong the inevitable.
