There was no literal sunset in The World That Never Was. The inhabitants in the world were doomed to wake up, live, and sleep through each day knowing that every minute of every day would be as black as night.
To Axel, however, it felt as though the proverbial sun had set on his world. His best friend -the only anchor that kept him sane in this crazy, upside down world, Roxas - had left, wanting to find out who he really was.
Axel knew who he was - his best friend; his partner in crime. Heck, they still had to scrap the gunk off the ceiling from their last prank.
But he knew better; Roxas had been staring off into the distance for sometime, wishing for the chance to move on and meet his Somebody.
As Roxas went on to find his other half, Axel felt as though his had vanished.

Marluxia would never admit this aloud, but being able to control people (although he was limited to Axel, Larxene, Vexen, and Naminé), gave him the greatest gift he’d ever known - power. He reveled in the fact that he could order Axel (his technical superior!) to fight the keybearer, and Axel, without a complaint, would comply.
His lust for power was his undoing, however. After Axel betrayed him, and killed off Vexen in order for the keybearer to not find out about the Nobodies, Marluxia had discovered that the redhead had become impossible to control. In fact, he found out that he’d never controlled Axel - Axel had been under Xemnas’s orders all along.
When Sora defeated him, Marluxia felt as though Axel had been the one, the one who’d twisted his chakrams in his back, smirking down to Marluxia as he faded away.

As Luxord walked through the halls of the Castle That Never Was, he faintly heard a lethargic melody coming from the ninth member’s room. After debating with himself about visiting the boy, curiosity got the better of him, and he knocked onto the door, before opening it.
Sitting on the bed was Demyx, who was absentmindedly plucking the strings of the sitar, his expression blank. “Hey, Luxord,” he mumbled, stopping his music, but not moving from his spot.
Luxord raised his eyebrows. “Something the matter?” He asked, more curious as to what could have sparked the normally jovial Nobody’s bout of depression.
Demyx let out an empty laugh. “Nothing can be -we can’t feel anything, remember?” He plucked another string, before letting out a sigh. “Zexion, Lexaeus … even Vexen, that crazy scientist. How could they all be dead? Even Larxene and Marluxia. True, Larxene was crazy, but…she was too strong, to die.”
Shrugging his shoulders, Luxord spoke. “They fought against the Keybearer and his friend, and lost.” He decided not to add how he’d found out how Vexen had died. Axel was already going off the deep end with the loss of his friend. “We simply have to be stronger.”
Demyx shrugged. “I hope I can be,” he muttered, before turning his attention back to his instrument, and plucking out another tune. Luxord said nothing for a minute - he simply listened to the sorrows of the ninth member through his music - before backing out of the doorway, closing the door, and slipping away.

“Axel?” Roxas began, glancing up to the redheaded Nobody. Axel simply raised his eyebrow, and looked at Roxas. “Are…we evil?”
“Evil?” Axel repeated, raising an eyebrow. “What brought about that idea?”
Roxas stared down at his hands as though they had become the most interesting things in the world. Axel simply waited for the blond to crack -which he quickly did. “I mean, we take hearts of others. We kill off people in order for the thirteen of us to become whole again. There have been thousands who’ve died, in order for an attempt for us to live again. Isn’t that…?”
Axel shrugged. “Who knows?” Roxas gave him a strange look. “Look. All I know is that we want to be whole again. We’re not evil; just people who had the taste of being real, and now, we need it to be. If we hadn’t killed them, and taken their hearts for our purpose, those people would’ve died eventually. We just…brought about the inevitable.”
“For our own selfish reasons, right?”
Axel narrowed his eyes. “You may be the Nobody to that keybearer, who has one of the strongest hearts in existence, but the rest of us have nothing. Not even the glimmer of emotions. Don’t try to pin you blame on me, because it’s not going to work.”
