A/N -- It's KH2!Riku in his Xehanort's Heartless!Form, which he mentions a lot. I know I kidnapped and murdered grammar, I'm sorry. D: And present tense. Sorry about that too. But Riku visits the world of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", like in the title. But unlike my happy fic, "The Bells Of Notre Dame" (well, that's not really happy. Riku's already been put into jail once or twice...), this is...not nice. ._.; Yeah. Just read it. ♥
Riku had been searching throughout the words, looking any sign of Sora. Still looking like Xehanort’s Heartless, he made sure to keep his hood up to warn people to stay as far away from him as possible.
And that’s just what they did. Riku was glad, but somewhere inside, it hurt. He had always been looked up to when he was on Destiny Islands - whether by the islanders, his friends, and… Sora. But now, he is forced to hide his face - hide away his past mistakes - as he wandered from world to world, searching for answers that would help him save Sora.
In one world he’d traveled to, the wind had caught under his hood and revealed his face. Before he could quickly re-cover his face, a woman had screamed; he turned around and saw her covering her daughter’s eyes, meanwhile whispering prayers to “save them from this demon!”
Riku had said nothing as he put his hood back on, but once his face was concealed again, he gritted his (no…not even his) teeth in anger. He knew why he had done this task - he had to save Sora. But how could he have fallen to the darkness so easily? Riku remembers what Xehanort’s Heartless (he was stilling calling him “Ansem” back then) would whisper into his ear and how he had fallen prey to its lure. Without meaning to, he had been put under the spell, feeling that if he could defeat Sora, he would be able to save Kairi and be stronger than anyone.
A foolish though. Riku smiles sadly at his memory, shaking his head at his foolish past self.
So he goes on, trying to find clues that would help Sora awaken quicker.

In the next world he portals to, he is forced to stay out of sight as soon as he arrives. He has no idea what world this is, but he can tell from the cruel smirks that rest on everyone’s faces that a stranger like him would not be welcome. So he treads lightly, making sure to stay out harms way, as he heads to the main part of this world, which seems to be a large church.
A group of children go running through the ally that he’s in; he presses himself against the wall, hoping to make himself invisible. When he sees the children clearly, he feels his eyes water ever so slightly - there’s three of them: a small girl and two boys, who bear a striking resemblance to himself, Kairi, and Sora. Riku half wants to scoop the children in his arms in a pathetic attempt to regain his childhood innocence, but he knows better, and he stays against to the wall.
The boy he can most easily identify with - the tallest, with an all-knowing smirking on his face - turns to face him, staring at Riku’s hood. Riku freezes even more, hoping that it is coincidence that the child is looking at him. But luck seems to not be on Riku’s side as the boy’s eyes widen and he grabs the girl and the other boy, pointing to him. Riku, realizing he has been caught, quickly moves pass the children, hoping to escape their sight, and teleport off this world. It has been no help to him.
But then the girl lets out a shrill scream. Riku’s blood runs cold, and he doesn’t turn around. He can’t believe it, but he’s really scared. He’s faced horrible things in the past, but perhaps his fear of unacccpetance has gotten to him after being in this body for so long, and he runs far away from the scream. It still pierces his ears (his heart) as he runs; his quick movements force his hood down, and draw screams from people he passes.
A group of people block his path to run before pointing at him and shouting insults. He backs away, attempting to quickly put his hood back up when he stumbles. He saves himself from falling by grabbing onto the side of a small fountain; he glances into the water and instantly wishes he hadn’t.
Xehanort’s Heartless - his worst enemy - is staring back. His hands are quivering and his eyes look nervous, but it’s really him! He is no monster, but this is the body he has to use to save Sora is… Riku tears his gaze away from the water’s surface, shoves past the people, and continues running.
His eyes are stinging with water, but he can’t cry. He doesn’t have the time to; if he doesn’t get somewhere safe …
The large church looms overheard in an almost threatening nature. Riku shakes his head and rushes inside its doors, heaving a relieved sigh to be safe.
A man approaches him, his footsteps giving away that’s he’s nervous and speaks. “Are you alright?”
Riku does not even look up before giving a choked sob and falling to the floor. The eyes that aren’t his are spilling tears that are, and he’s given up on it. He wants to save Sora and he knows this is the only way he can, but he can’t take this …this… hatred much more. He almost wouldn’t mind falling back into the cold darkness, if only to escape this…
No, he knows he can’t. Riku puts his head up before looking at the man. “I’m…sorry,” Riku says, hating his new voice. No wonder he never speaks anymore. “This city… is…”
The man gives a sad, knowing smile, before gently patting Riku’s shoulder. “Cruel? Yes, it is.” He sighs and stands up before approaching the altar of the church. Riku slowly climbs to his feet and follows the man, not knowing what else to do. “Although Paris is certainly beautiful, its citizens are most certainly cruel to the unusual. And you, I must admit,” the man gives him another glance. “Are certainly most unusual.”
“What…what is this place?” Riku asks, glancing around the church. The paintings and statues give him an uneasy conformity, and he feels like he could stay here a while. But he cannot - he has to go back and help Sora.
The man turns to face Riku. “Why, it is Notre Dame.” He approaches Riku, and now that he has a clear view of Riku’s (Xehanort’s heartless’s) cold, orange eyes, he doesn’t touch his shoulder, as though afraid. “All who need help come here. May you find that help within these walls.”
Turning, the man disappears, and Riku nods, although he knows that no one receives it. He stares up to one of the statues before giving a soft sigh and tearing his gaze away. Someone who has dabbled at the dark side can really never fully go back to the light.
But it is nice to get a warm, kind hand that can help you back onto the right path.
Perhaps his sight had been off. Riku shrugs before putting his hood back up and walking out the door. He wishes thank the man, but he doesn’t want to cause more pandemonium in the church. As soon as he steps outside, he summons a darkness portal and steps inside.
He still has work to do.
