Riku hadn’t realized exactly how much he loved Sora until this very day. Every single thing the brunet had done for him over the years, every smile he could remember Sora giving him -- Sora had always been behind him, even when Riku forgot the very meaning of friendship, betrayed his friends, and went to the darkness. He, personally, wouldn’t have been so forgiving if his friend had done that to him, but Sora easily done so with open arms. And Riku’s love - maybe devotion would be a better word here - grew all the more, as Sora’s trust in Riku never waned.
Before he could ever mention it to the brunet, time had passed by without him realizing it. Riku, Sora, and Kairi all grew older and older; school work faded in importance as getting a job became number one. Even with all of this, the brunet still had time to hop onto the Gummi Ship (borrowed from King Mickey) and visit his old friends from all the worlds. Sometimes he’d bring Riku and Kairi along, but as problems like midterms and finals came up, Kairi would shake her head and forgo the trip, leaving the two boys alone.
Riku savored the times he could trek through places like Agrabah or The Land of Dragons with Sora walking alongside of him. There were few things he could think he would rather do, but when random occurrences - such as Aladdin nudging Riku’s chest and mumbling how much Sora kept talking about him through both journeys - Riku forgot about all his other problems and enjoyed his time spent with Sora.
However, no matter how much he spent with Sora, the brunet’s attention was always directed at Kairi. Riku smiled, glad that his best friend could find love (so easily too; she was head over heels for him and could fight for herself - Sora wouldn’t be able to find a girl like that anywhere else), as he tried to ignore the tugging at his heart. Sure, he wanted to take Sora in his arms and whisper the truth into his ears, but it was a bit too late for that now...seeing as Riku, along with the rest of the congregation, was watching the back of the church and waiting for Kairi to walk down the aisle, escorted by the mayor, garbed in a simple white wedding dress.
Riku stood next to Sora, who was shaking slightly and biting his lip. “What if she says no?!” he whispered to his best friend. He wrung his hands nerviously. “What if she turns back down the aisle, realizing that she hates me?”
“Relax.” Riku forced a chuckle out. “She loves you. Now shut up, she’s here.”
The entire ceremony went exceptionally well. Vows were exchanged and rings were placed onto ring fingers. Although Sora was extremely nervous, he managed to keep his cool throughout the procession, as Kairi looked beautiful. And of course, seeing as Sora just had to invite every single friend he had made on his journey (which filled up the small Destiny Island church and then some), once they kissed, Genie began an explosion of lights and sounds, causing all the guests to cheer.
No one noticed that the best man, the one who should’ve been cheering the loudest of all, had turned his head away and closed his eyes when they kissed.
The wedding dinner took place outside (for no indoor place could house the amount of guests), and exceptional food was served (thanks to the Beast’s servants, who thought their good friend Sora, who helped to break the spell, deserved the very best on his wedding). Kairi laughed alongside Ariel and Jasmine, exchanging gossip and having a good time, while Sora chattered with Donald and Goofy and Aladdin commented on the successful nuptials. Jack Sparrow, ever the pirate, attempted to outdo every other guest there by drinking his weight in liquor. Giving a small smile at the act, Riku poked at his food - it was insanely good, even he had to admit - before he dropped his fork and took a walk through the gardens.
Even if it was his best friends’ wedding, the only people he actually knew were the married couple, and their parents. His parents had come too, of course, but due to yet another business trip, they were forced to leave earlier than expected. Riku frowned, and slumped onto a bench in the gardens, about to put his head in his hands when he heard a small cough.
He blinked and glanced down before jumping to his feet. “Oh, Your Majesty.”
King Mickey blinked up to him, eyes wide. “Well, Riku! What could you be moping around on such a beautiful day like today?” Without waiting for an answer, the king glanced back to the wedding dinner with a smile. “Gosh. Makes me happy to Sora in such a good mood.” King Mickey glanced back up to Riku with a smile. “Make sure you’re happy too, okay?”
“Alright,” he said softly, waiting until the King left to congratulate Sora before dropping his head into his hands again. “How can I be happy,” he mumbled to himself, certain he was alone, “if the one I love just got married to my best friend?”
“No wonder you looked away for the kiss.” Riku jumped slightly, but Mulan sat next to him anyway. “I mean, I knew you were Sora’s best friend, but I never thought you two were that close.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Riku mumbled, the shock of his overheard confession wearing off. “He’s happily married, and I’m probably just going to envy them both until I die alone.”
Mulan gave a small frown. “That’s not a pleasant thing to think about. Surely there’s someone out there for you?” Riku didn’t respond, so she patted his back. “Well, I’m sorry. I hope you can cheer up one day.”
With that being said, Mulan stood to her feet and walked off, more than likely to join her boyfriend (boyfriend? Was that what they called each other? Were they actually going out?), Shang.
Riku stayed on the bench until another shadow appeared over him. He glanced up and instantly put a smile on when he saw who it was. “Sora!” He forced a grin, standing to his feet. “What are you doing here? You should be with your new wife, you goof.”
Sora gave a small grin. “Well, you shouldn’t have disappeared!” he retorted, shaking his head. “We were worried.”
Riku’s smile dropped a notch. The collective “we.” It probably didn’t mean much (seeing as Kairi was one of his good friends - of course she’d be worried about him as well), but it just showed that he was now second best to Sora. Now and forever.
“Yeah, well, I’m heading back.” He shrugged. “Just wanted to think.”
“Riku…I hope you don’t think I’m replacing you.” Riku looked over to Sora, who was scuffing his feet onto the ground. Riku resisted smiling - same old Sora. “I mean, we’ve been best friends foreeeever, and I could never give you up. We’ll always be together, right?”
Riku sighed and shook his head, realizing how selfish he’d been. “Of course we will,” Riku informed Sora, running a hand through his best friend’s hair. “Someone has to make sure you don’t screw up all the time.”
Sora gave a pout, which led Riku to laugh as they walked back to the wedding dinner together.
