interesting you should post this because I'm right with you. I started boycotting walmart about a year ago.* there's about 1000 ways they work hand in hand with the hard right, too many to explain, but in general they exploit immigrants, oppose anti-discrimination laws, won't stock lots of liberal books but do sell all sorts of Ann Coultier, etc. and a bunch of other stuff. they also abuse eminent domain. they're one of the worst corporations right now.

*in a post-surgery desperation I bought a chair from them.

I think all of this is just now starting to come to light for me. I'm not sure why I'm so behind - I think it's because I've been focusing most of my attention on exploitation/human rights violations elsewhere in the world, and forgetting about all of the problems right here at home.

I think post-surgery desperation can be forgiven. :)

It took this for you to decide to boycott Walmart? I've been technically boycotting them for years, after hearing about how they abuse worker's rights!

(Of course, I don't believe there is a Walmart anywhere in the city, but that's a moot point. If there were a Walmart, I would not go there.)

Well...I'm afraid most of my attention has been on problems outside the U.S. I probably should have been boycotting them for years, too.

Better late then never, I suppose!

Just to throw in more encouragement, welcome to the winning team! (? - well, I hope we win, anyway.) The last thing I bought at Wal-Mart was, hmmm... I dunno. It was more years ago than I can remember.

Yeah. They suck. For more reasons than most people would ever be able to stomach.

(My father represents a man who develops, among other things, Wal-Mart shopping centers. They are indeed the pinnacle of modern worker- and community-exploitation. It remains the only thing I can't reasonably discuss with him.)

my dad manages a walmart distribution center. it's bad because he's one of the smartest people i know as far as people go, but he tends to ignore walmart's subversive community destruction, while also endorsing it's efforts at being semi-decent (providing profit percentages... like half a quarter-percent of one store to schools, and lowering prices on goods... which forces other independent, local businesses to the ground)

but my main reason for hating walmart is that everything there is always WET. it always feels like a used kleenex. and the fact that the people are so ugly? uck that... walmart SUUUUCKS.
