Challenge #10 I Just Discovered...

I have to preface this by saying that I recently became a huge Pacey Witter fan. That being said, I was none too happy (while being EXTREMELY EXCITED) to learn that Joshua Jackson was one of the wronged parties here. But obviously I’m a complete sucker for number one: all things Showtime (see Homeland, Shameless, Dexter, Ray Donovan, Masters of Sex, etc.) and number two: dirty, sexy television (see again Homeland, Shameless, Dexter, Ray Donovan, Masters of Sex).

There have been four episodes so far and while I’m hooked, I’m kinda bored? I know that makes absolutely no sense at all, but there are elements of the show that I’m very intrigued by. Mostly the investigation that is going on in the future. I have a feeling it’s Cole that is dead. Or perhaps Alison’s boss. There would probably be a list of suspects for that guy.

Here are the facts so far for the future: Alison has a child.

THAT’S IT.

Is Alison with Noah or Cole? Or neither? Did Helen leave Noah? WHO IS THE FATHER OF ALISON’S CHILD?

The latest episode was all about Noah and Alison. So far I am not at all invested in their relationship. The show is supposed to be about “good” people who do this terrible thing. (I think) last episode Alison made a comment about there not being good or bad people. Let’s not get into a philosophical debate about that, but I don’t think Alison or Noah are terrible people. On the other hand, I just can’t get on board with Noah cheating on his wife because he’s unhappy with his life. It doesn’t seem to have much to do with her, outside of the part that her parents suck. Maybe cheating has nothing to do with the spouse, I have no clue, but I just feel so terrible for his kids. I know I would be devastated if I found out my father cheated on my mother.

Another part of the show that caught my interest in the first episode is the alternating viewpoints. It really makes you question how people see each other and things. For example in either the first or second episode there is a party that Helen’s parents throw and Alison is there as a waitress. From Noah’s point of view his wife is kind and loving and in a weird place with her parents. She’s a good mother, a good daughter, etc. Adversely, Alison sees her as rude and elitist and a little bit condescending. Noah also describes Helen as wearing a nice, but not altogether flattering dress, where Alison describes Helen in this elegant evening gown that makes her look beautiful.

The clothing is an important difference throughout the show. Noah always describes Alison wearing tight fitting, short dresses and skirts, showing off her cleavage or lack of bra. When Alison is telling the story she is always dressed more appropriately. The difference in Noah’s appearance is always subtle (at least in my opinion). Clearly Noah sees Alison as this sex symbol. It’ll be interesting to see if that changes as his feelings develop.

In closing, I’m intrigued but not in love. I hope it gets better because the cast is really great.

PS I need a tag for The Affair :)
