Ichigo's eyes were shut. The desert sun beat on his back, but he didn't care. He was reaching inward, trying to grasp that one thread of power that let him unleash that one energy attack. It was difficult to do it when he wasn't in an immediate crisis. But it would be fast enough to catch Aiolos and anyone else Grita threw at him. He had to figure out how he did it.
The last time he'd been able to use it had been because Watanuki was bleeding to death and he had to finish a fight quickly. Ichigo tried to remember that feeling of rage, of near-panic, of need. He was in a similar situation, wasn't he? The kids -- Ilya, Ness, Tohru, Haruhi, and even Sophie -- they only had so much time.
He had to do this.
Who knew what was happening to them right now? Was their life force being drained away? Were they even being taken care of? Ichigo felt anger kindle in him, and familiar power stirred awake once more. He let the murmur become a roar, riding the wave and feeling where it came from. He almost had it. It was right at his fingertips.
He could almost--
There.
He let out a wild yell as he brought his sword around in a great sweeping arc, so fast the sword's white edge left a crescent afterimage in the air. No, that was no afterimage, that was energy. It seemed to hang in the air for a split second, but in an instant it rocketed away and hit a large rock, one of many scattered around the desert. It made a deep scratch in the rock's surface: a good two inches, though Ichigo couldn't quite tell from this distance. He stood panting, a grim smile on his face, nerves buzzing with the aftershocks of power. He'd done it! He'd really done it!
.....now, to do it again....
