Life on an airship was surprisingly quiet so far. Then again, that could be because Kuro was used to disaster and mayhem being an almost daily occurrences because of the company he kept. He had spent the better part of the day napping, and was...well, not exactly bored, just no longer sleepy.

He was walking around on two feet, and really only noticed the person in the hat because the last "person" who had shown up in his life wearing something similar had actually been five clockwork cats standing on each others' shoulders in disguise.

Well, the guy wasn't wearing a mask, so it was probably fine this time. If it occurred to him that staring might be rude, he certainly didn't care enough to stop.

Out of the corner of his eye, Edgeworth caught something staring at him. He halted immediately and looked around, only to see that it was a cat standing on two legs. Well, that wasn't so bad. He took a step forward, and-

Wait a minute! Edgeworth turned around again and gaped. Cats weren't supposed to do that!

They usually didn't and Kuro wouldn't have either if he was back home because he was worried it might be too much for the old couple who took him in to take. But this wasn't home.

He raised a paw in greeting, "Yo."

And now he was talking. However, after he thought about it for a moment, that wasn't too strange; as absurd as it was, this wasn't the first talking cat he had seen. Besides, perhaps he wasn't a cat in the strictest sense of the word. Perhaps he was a demi-human of some sort. That wasn't strange in the slightest. He had simply overreacted. Nerves, that's what it was. A case of nerves.

"Erm..." Edgeworth cleared his throat, and said, "Hello."

Ness was in the infirmary the when Edgeworth stopped by. Even if the location wasn't determined yet, he knew the Convoy was going to be leaving soon, and it was pretty much a given that they wouldn't finish this job without some injuries. And injuries was Ness was hoping would be the worst of what was going to happen. He was busy taking stock of the supplies - they weren't short on anything, thankfully, but it wouldn't hurt to stock up on a few more supplies before the ship took off. It was better to prepare for the worst. Just in case.

He heard someone at the door, and expecting it to just be a routine bellyache or sprained muscle, Ness called out, "Be with you in a second," as he put some bottles of antiseptic in a cabinet. Turning around, he asked, "So what brings you here to-"

Ness stopped in midsentence, having not expected to see a stranger with one arm.

Edgeworth loitered near the entrance and tilted his head at the young man. He looked far too young to be one of the doctors. He must be an assistant of some sort. A nurse, perhaps? Or maybe he was someone in training.

"I'm new to the ship," he explained calmly, as if nothing was amiss. "And I came by for a checkup. However, if now is a bad time..."

that icon just made me realize that Edgeworth can't do the fingertap anymore... :c eighthmelody February 17 2011, 04:35:33 UTC
"No, no, now's fine!" Ness said, suddenly feeling very, very bad for staring. "Please have a seat," he said, gesturing to a nearby bed. "I'll be with you in a minute."

He walked over to where the spare charts were kept. Right. Routine checkup, nothing more.

...well, he was staring, there was no doubt about that. But at least he wasn't staring at-nevermind, it wasn't important. Edgeworth gave him a sharp nod, and carefully began to undo the buttons on his jacket; it was a slow and laborious effort, but he had some practice yet. It would only take him a few more moments to get the last button done.

von Karma was increasingly finding reasons to want to get off this goddamned ship, and this was becoming increasingly obvious every time he went through the halls to the training rooms. He hadn't accomplished anything in terms of finding potential support-not that he'd want any from anyone here. It was impossible for him to care any less about what went on, but he continued to-

...who had he passed just now...? A man in a fedora? That had looked like- No, it couldn't be, he'd-

...actually upon turning to see who that was, while not quite as bad as Gregory Edgeworth's vengeful ghost, it was the second worst thing.

...who was it that he just passed by? He saw a flash of gray hair and a snappy, dark blue coat, and he could have sworn he caught a glimpse of an eye-patch-

"Hrk!"

Edgeworth spun around and nearly choked on his own tongue. "Y-you!"

"What are you doing here!?" said von Karma, gripping his shoulder-it always had to act up at times like this. His eye scanned the situation, looking for any...

...his arm was missing. That was a possible explanation, come to think of it...

"I should be asking the same of you," he snapped back. "After all, I was under the impression that the crew here was trustworthy."

It was five o'clock.

It had been a ritual anywhere Kurumi had been for the past three years now: she would shut down her operations in the forge, burst into the nearest room with a radio, and listen to Steel Samurai. Sometimes she'd drag the rest of the weapon masters along with her (and she refused to entertain the idea that that could be why so many of them had left their positions), but today, she was on her own, so she went straight to her own room and turned on the radio in the corner.

Soon, the narration was blaring through the walls as the purple-haired girl sat attentively in front of the radio.

As Edgeworth walked through the corridors, he heard a familiar tune, followed by a booming, nefarious voice.

"With that foolish samurai gone, I, Evil Magistrate, can finally set my plans for Neo Olde Solare in motion!"

"Noooo!" wailed a high pitched, female voice. "You-you can't! We won't let you!"

"We?" he mocked. "Without the Steel Samurai, you and your friends are worthless! Pitiful!"

"But he-"

"You fool! The Steel Samurai is dead!"

Whaaaaat?! No, that couldn't be! Granted, it had been some time since Edgeworth was able to keep up with the show, but that was absurd! There must be some kind of explanation for that...that nonsense.

"That's not true! You'll see! He always comes through when we need him! He's a true hero of justice!"

Kurumi nodded along. There was no way he could really have died! The Steel Samurai was the greatest hero of all -- the existence of Milky Rose proved that, in some way or another. She scooted even closer to the radio, eyes filled with excitement.

"Aha, but what you didn't know is that, when I had my soldiers sweep the area after he fell from my airship... we found this!"

A series of gasps rang out from the radio.

Once the gasps faded, a series of shocked voices joined the woman from before (speaking of which, who was that? It almost sounded like Little Lady Iron Plum, but the voice was just a little too nasally when it hit the highest pitches, and obnoxiously breathy to boot. It could be a new character, or-no! Her actress wasn't replaced, was she?!)

"No!"

"It's-"

"It can't be!"

"It's exactly as you see it!" boomed the Evil Magistrate. "It is none other than-"

Then, his voice was cut out, and replaced by a short jingle.

"You're listening to the Steel Samurai on the Global Network, brought to you by Peony Rice Company, Xerxes Shipping and Trade, and other fine companies. And now, a word from our sponsors!"

Edgeworth choked back a shocked cry. What a cheap tactic! Did they really have to stoop so low to get a captive audience for those blasted advertisements?!

Small details did make a disguise. Not just for the injured man, but for others as well. For example, the pilot who had cut her own hair into a short mess, shortened her skirts, and stopped smiling. The incident that caused it all was so far away now... three years, hadn't it been? In the wake of worse and worse inexplicable tragedies in its vein, some people had already forgotten it. She'd had very few clues in a long time, and she'd slowly began to regain a semblance of happiness and a willingness to rely on people outside herself once in a while, but she still went by her new identity. It was easier, in the end.

She still kept some things, though.

Sara was leaning against the wall at one of the corners in the hallway, looking at the pendant around her neck. She wound it up and let the song play, the gears turning in the music box inside.

Edgeworth heard the melody and, curiosity piqued, he walked forward. There he saw the girl as she fiddled with the source of the music: her necklace. To some people, this would have meant nothing at all, other than the fact that she possessed a rather unique trinket. However, for Edgeworth it meant something more. After a moment his eyes widened in realization; while he did not recognize the tune, he recognized the necklace. The Werec siblings had a matching pair just like that years ago.

It could be a coincidence. It was most likely a coincidence. Still, he had to know for sure. Edgeworth stepped towards the girl and cleared his throat.

"Excuse me?"

Sara stood up with a shock and blinked back to the world around her. She turned and stepped back from the unfamiliar man, a hand around her necklace.

"What is it?" Was he new?

"This may sound strange, but..."

Edgeworth gestured towards her, and asked, "Could you please tell me where you received that necklace?"
