It didn't long to fly upriver, north, to the target location. The Nihl River flowed out of the Badlands as though rushing straight for Bydan, but then it kinked sharply before turning south and eventually swinging around to meet the Gabni River. Hisoka had the map spread out on his knees and was plotting their position at intervals, as a good navigator should. But he was a native of this area and knew it well. As the riverbend came in sight, he said, "That's got to be the clearing, up ahead, where you can see a notch in the treeline! So, what's our plan?"

{{OOC: I'm assuming there's a separate thread for each aircraft. Hope that's ok with everybody!}}

What indeed. The captain called it a scouting mission, but it remained to be seen whether or not it stayed that way. He hadn't had much of a good-luck streak with this ship, and this didn't seem like the kind of situation where that was going to turn around. Cynicism aside, with what they knew now, all they could do was stay out of sight and hope for the best.

"Right now? Recon," He replied. "How far does the clearing put us from the target site?"

Dean was not half so familiar with this area as Hisoka, and nearly completely unfamiliar with flying in smaller craft; the result was that he was keeping fairly quiet, jigging his knee up and down from his seat behind them both and wondering why, again, he was here. He had not yet realized that he was humming to himself, nor that his reflexive grip on the shoulderstrap of his satchel was turning his knuckles white; these three things were the only outward signs he allowed to show how uncomfortable he was with being this high in the air.

No, seriously, what am I doing here? He cleared his throat by way of bulling his way into the conversation.

"And when's happy hour?"

Not that he had that much of value to add.

Hisoka replied to Fox, "The target site would be right inside the clearing. How close do we want to get, however? And how? If we fly over, we risk alerting the hostage-takers to our presence, but we'd get a fast and possibly accurate look." He nudged his binoculars, which were wedged in front of his right boot toe, on the floor. "On the other hand, there's plenty of air traffic over this area since it's right on a trade route. They may not even bother to look up ( ... )

This whole situation made Souji pretty nervous, but there was nothing to do but to do it. It had been awhile since he'd take his plane out, but it still felt natural enough to be cutting through the air again. His plane was meant for speed though, not this kind of work... still, it'd do in a pinch.

He glanced back at Ryuuki, his glasses perched on his nose and giving him a stern appearance. "I was thinking we could land a ways away and get a closer look on foot. Not as loud, and we can get more details that way."

It was the first time Ryuuki had been in a smaller plane, but instead of greeting the experience with all the enthusiasm of an excited puppy, he matched Souji's expression with a serious one of his own.

He nodded, "And the more we can find out, the better."

"Alright then, hold on." Souji carefully banked the plane, bringing it in a good ways away from the river-- he could only hope that the flowing water would cover up any sounds from the plan.

Stepping out he covered his eyes from the sun's glare, looking out towards their goal.

The first thing he did when he stepped out of the plane was to draw Bakuya from its sheath. It was better to have it out, than to be aught unprepared if when he needed it.

"Let's go."

The exploding gunpowder packet is supposed to make the satyrs to look away from the ambush....@_@ son_of_the_lake March 10 2011, 17:41:37 UTC
Hisoka said to Fox, softly, "Runway clear for takeoff?" He scratched a match on the bottom of his shoe and lit one loose end of the knot that tied the gunpowder-stuffed bandana. Holding this makeshift firecracker in one hand, he ran forward and dropped it on the ground in the deep shadow of a pine tree just at the edge of the clearing ( ... )

Fox had a step of a head start. He didn't bother watching his footfalls, in a few seconds it wouldn't matter how much noise they made.

His pistol was already in hand as he ran. He gripped it as he braced for the bang. The explosion rang out like, well, a gunshot. There was no time to verify that the distraction had worked, their plan depended on acting swiftly.

With the smallest cautionary glance to where the guards had been, Fox put his attention on the dancers.

The sound echoed extra loud between the trees and the waters, and the dancers and their look outs all looked up at once, their almost elf-like ears twitching. The woman on the alter even paused in her snarling to look aside.

It was then that all hell broke loose. Hisoka's attack hit on the saytrs just as planned, though it's thick hide saved it's head from rolling off, thick black foul smell blood gushed out of the neck wound, and the creature bellowed in surprise.

Damn, the satyr had tough hide! Hisoka sprang back, momentarily out of claw-reach. (He thought.) If the satyr was mortally wounded and bleeding fast enough, with luck he would fall.

Fox had been a step ahead of Hisoka when they sprang out of the tree-shadows, and without shifting his gaze from the satyr, Hisoka widened the circle of his attention to locate Fox and to know how he was doing.

Truthfully, he wasn't nervous now. All the anxiety that had been accumulating since they'd left Serenity had finally found an outlet, and even if he probably should've been nervous, his grip on the familiar handle of the Impala, her comforting weight in his hand like an extension of his arm, his heartbeat strong and steady in his ears - this was what he knew. This was what he'd always known.

He would rather not have been alone, though.

Shoving the thought forcefully from his mind, he visually checked the positions of the sentries again. Three. No problem. Christ, I hope those legs are as awkward for running as they look for picking up chicks... Dean did not let himself think about the others, if Ryuuki's sword would behave itself, if Hisoka was as good a shot as he should be, if Fox was as good as he seemed; instead he counted down the time, keeping a sharp eye for any visible movement that would be his newest friend pelting away from the first part of the distraction ( ... )

The three lookouts had, like the dancers, looked up all at once at the shotgun-like explosion. They had seemed about to hunt the sound down when Dean's attack started. The first shot would have easily killed a human man, and the satyr screamed, clutching it's head and falling to the ground, it's goat legs kicking spasticly. The second shot wasn't as lucky, cracking off another beast's horn.

But it did it's job regardless, and the two still standing bellowed and gave chase. Even with their twisted legs they were far from slow.

Dean had a headstart and he was not in his own turn, slow by any means; but he was only a man, and without pausing to check how much ground the satyrs had gained, he knew they would eventually overtake him if he simply kept running. Of course, it would've helped to have had time and materials to set traps, someone else helping him to run the satyrs into the middle of ambush, or even some familiarity with the surrounding terrain. There'd been the pass-over in Fox's plane, of course, and Dean had done a bit of wandering around between groups, but excellent memory and survival skills only went so far, and...

The river in front of him contrived with a particularly thick stand of trees to force him one way or the another. Ticking a third shot onto his mental checklist, Dean paused only long enough to spin and take it before darting to his left away from the river, using the brief glimpse to try to gauge how long it would take this chase to devolve to a fight.

They weren't that far behind, though Dean still had a few moments before he would be forced to fight. The lead saytr-- the one with the cracked horn, snarled at him when it noticed he'd turned around.

"Going to feed you your own guts slowly before you bleed out human!" It howled, adding a bit more speed to it's step.

The "halting the spell" thread anonymousryuuki March 12 2011, 03:45:47 UTC
This close to the satyrs, Bakuya was kicking up a big enough fuss to give Ryuuki a headache. It was difficult to know if it was doing it because it sensed the satyrs or because whatever they were doing was messing with the sword's inherent magic, but either way he did his best to put it out of his mind. He couldn't afford the distraction...there were too many things at stake here. All he could do, was trust that Bakuya wouldn't fail him now...and trust that all of them were going to make it out of her alive.

It felt like he had been waiting forever already when the gunpowder went off. The moment he heard it, he left his hiding place and swung his sword in a horizontal slash aiming for the nearest satyr's side. It wasn't a kind of wound that would kill immediately, but he aimed deep enough that, if it worked it should make it harder for it to stop him getting to the alter. Because Ryuuki's first goal was to stop the spell, and if the less time he wasted pulling his weapon out of a satyr's body the better.

Souji was right on Ryuuki's heels, his own sword up and ready to go. While the other man attacked one saytr, Souji went at another, aiming for a belly slice. He lacked much training in the blade, so better to go for a known weak spot then to try to be fancy.

Both attacks hit, slicing side and belly as the two men passed. The Satyrs screamed, the one Ryuuki hit seeming to be worse off and going to one furry knee, while the one Souji hit was shallower, and it lashed out with it's claws to try and stop either one of them from reaching their captive.

Don't use you eyes to look. Use your instincts and your body to feel.Ryuuki was moving the moment Bakuya's blade met flesh. He didn't spare a second glance at the satyr, but he heard the scream and the sound of it dropping to one knee. He pulled the sword back out, letting the satyr's drop change the angle slightly, hoping that would help widen the wound further. He noticed the other satyr moving, but he kept his attention focused on the alter: he would have to trust for now that Souji would keep the other satyr off him...and hope that the satyr he wounded wouldn't be able to stand up yet ( ... )
