Watanuki would hear the plane before he saw it: the unmistakable sound of Zangetsu's engine streaking through the sky and looping around the larger ship. Ichigo had radioed in on his approach, and didn't have to wait too long for the doors to slide open, operated by the remote switch in the radio room. He took a long approach, cutting his speed as much as he could and dropping smoothly into the long hall that served as the hangar. Landing inside a ship was always tricky, but years of practice had made this routine. Pulling into the empty space his plane usually occupied, Ichigo shut the engines off and flipped the last few switches to power the plane down ( ... )

"Go right ahead," she said. Utena winced as she spoke; that man got a nasty hit on her ribs before he went down for good. It was nothing she wouldn't survive, though.

"I'll be right after you."

Watanuki was sure at first that he was imagining the sound of the plane. But when it grew louder rather than fading away he stood, his heart already pounding, looking to the hangar doors and willing them to open-- and when they did and the familiar shape of Zangetsu appeared silhouetted against the sky, he was moving toward its landing place before it even touched down.

The plane, of course, was faster than he was; by the time it landed he hadn't crossed the distance across the hangar yet. But he could see two heads in the cockpit, and as he got closer hear the sound of two voices-- they were both alive. They were both here.

And then Ichigo jumped out of the plane, and Watanuki was suddenly flooded with relief so strong (he wasn't dead, he wasn't mortally wounded, he was alive and moving), he had to move quicker, move closer, get close enough to ensure that this was true, that they were here and truly safe and whole. He broke into a near-run, calling out as he moved.

"Ichigo!"

He was about to ask her if she needed a hand down when he spotted Watanuki. All thoughts of the desolation he'd just seen were pushed to the back of his mind at the look on the cook's face. Had something else happened on the Convoy while he and Utena had been gone?

"Hey, is everything all right?" he asked, concerned. "What's wrong?"
