The kid hadn't reported back yet. Maybe, if it was any of his other men or women, he wouldn't have been so concerned. But to say that Kaoru's circumstances were unique was an understatement. With her old comrades out there, there was no telling what happened to her. Did she actually get through to her friend? He doubted it. Injured? Captured? Killed?

It was time to find out. He went to the fore of the battle, gun in hand, and dashed for cover as he kept an eye out for her.

Hisoka had returned to Garrettstown after many strange adventures, and had picked up Ms. Zoe's journal transmission just as he arrived on the eastern outskirts of town. There was considerable confusion in the streets. Suddenly he saw his captain darting across an open space, and he ran after him, carrying his shotgun. "Captain Reynolds!" he called, to alert him to his presence. (Also, so as not to get shot by mistake...)

Zoë had had the very same idea as the Captain. After giving her that whole speech about choosing for herself, it hadn't felt right to make her keep away when she clearly really wanted to be out there fighting. But if the girl had gotten herself hurt, Zoë still wasn't sure she'd ever forgive herself.

She'd gone in a different direction from Mal, but they'd sort of looped around and met in the middle. Hisoka was coming up on them too.

"Any luck?" she asked both of them.

Kaoru twitched. Voices? Was it...? Forcing herself to think clearly, she cycled through her memory, trying to match the faint noises to any of the other children. Solid and Void coming back to finish them off? Another team just coming across them? She couldn't think of anything. It hurt.

For all she knew, the voices belonged to someone else entirely. A villager, a visiting ship, someone who would be more than happy to pare down the enemy count if they saw two DF children lying on the ground, unable to do anything more. She cringed and tried again to at least move more than a millimetre or two.
