Given the customizability (sp?) of coffee beverages (nonfat extrahot no foam et cetera), particularly in our part of the world, it's kind of ridiculous to argue with a customer about what they ordered, even if you think it's sacrelige. I was a barista too. I made gross drinks for people, but that's what they wanted and they didn't ask for my opinion. It's commerce.

And I mean, pouring coffee on the floor rather than in your mouth - it's obvious how different those are. If you're trying to prevent ghetto lattes and save milk, that's one thing, but arguing that it "RUINS THE ESPRESSO" (subjectivity) is quite another. I don't care what it scientifically involved. I think French Roast coffee is the nastiest shit ever, it's totally burnt, but lots of people love it.

I'm not necessarily arguing that Murky Coffee isn't being pretentious with its policy. But they're certainly entitled to it, without threats of arson on a blog. I think both parties in this situation acted like pricks. On the other hand, I don't think it's pretentious for someone who is an expert to give advice to a customer, so long as it's done in a manner that's helpful. For example, my local coffee shop suggests the customer allow them to cool the espresso with a little water before adding ice to protect the integrity of the shop. If the customer does not want, the barista wouldn't refuse to serve it as requested, but they'd try their best to dissuade ( ... )
