Summary: Look at the title. Then look at the summary. Vampires in space.
They’re five weeks into their mission, already well past the edge of their galaxy and speeding through hyperspace to another, when Chanyeol gets the niggling feeling that something isn’t quite right. As second in command only to their Captain, Joonmyun, it’s his responsibility to handle anything trivial or out of the ordinary. It’s only when he can’t solve a problem that it goes to Joonmyun. And this one might be one that Chanyeol needs help with.
It’s only after he spies a peculiar mark on one of the crew’s neck on his way to his quarters that he decides an intervention is necessary. It’s not the first time he’s seen a pair of twin injuries on the crew - sometimes on the neck, other times on a wrist - and it worries him. There’s something going on on the ship and being this far into space, it needs to be dealt with decisively.
He knows Joonmyun is asleep when he requests entry to the Captain’s quarters, but this can’t wait. The all clear is given and Chanyeol steps inside, floundering for a moment in the darkness. If he squints, he can see Joonmyun standing from his bed, hair a mess and uniform traded for plain clothes. He still retains that aura of power that comes with his captaincy.
“This better be good,” Joonmyun grumbles, voice raspy from his interrupted sleep.
Chanyeol rushes over, eyes wide and fixated on the smaller man in front of him, a cursory sweep to ensure there are no marks on him first. “Captain, I think there’s a vampire on the ship,” Chanyeol hisses in the darkness, still unnerved at the very idea.
Joonmyun blinks up at him, unamused. “Don’t be stupid, Park,” Joonmyun chides and it nearly has Chanyeol collapsing in relief. “Of course there’s a vampire on board.”
Chanyeol feels a very distinct chill run from the tips of his ears all the way to his toes that are now curling in his standard issue shiny black shoes.
“Didn’t you read over the personnel files that came with the mission briefing?” Joonmyun gives Chanyeol a look of disdain. “Did you honestly think that a human could learn the over 400 languages required for this mission?”
“It’s Baekhyun?!” Chanyeol gasps, his voice echoing a lot louder than he’d meant. Their communications officer, one Byun Baekhyun, has always been the cheery sort, constantly smiling and brightening a room with his glowing presence. Chanyeol’s found himself a victim of Baekhyun’s hypnotic laughter more than once and now he knows why. “But he’s biting people!”
Joonmyun reaches out, taking Chanyeol by his arms before he slips to the floor, knees turned to jelly. “Chanyeol, there are several dozen of the crew who signed releases that allow Baekhyun to feed from them during our journey. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been granted leave to come aboard.”
“Oh,” Chanyeol squeaks. He leaves Joonmyun’s quarters with stern orders to read over the personnel files and get some sleep.
It’s not unheard of for Supernaturals to join the space program and it’s certainly a normal enough occurrence for one to be on a ship - it’s procedure for all vessels to have a banshee on board in case of hairy situations - but Chanyeol’s never known a vampire before. He came across a siren in his third year at the academy and that one werewolf he’d accidentally pissed off the night before a full moon and nearly ended up with his head removed, and he presumes he’s passed other Supernaturals, had classes with them before without knowing.
It’s just that Baekhyun doesn’t seem like a vampire. Chanyeol had thought they were supposed to be all slinky and keep to the shadows, yet Baekhyun embraces his place on the bridge, basking in the light from nearby stars as they pass. He’s always had an ethereal quality and, sure, Chanyeol had entertained the idea that a little incubus blood may run through Baekhyun’s veins, but Baekhyun drinks blood.
Despite himself - and his sense of self-preservation - Chanyeol wonders what it’s like. Not to be a vampire, of course. He thinks about what it would be like to have the weight of Baekhyun’s teeth pushed to his skin, how hard he would have to press for them to sink through the layers of flesh and reach the blood beneath.
Involuntarily, his eyes drift to Baekhyun over at the comms during his next shift, earning several elbows to the side from Joonmyun who just seems exasperated over the entire thing. “Just talk to him,” Joonmyun says in his Captain’s tone later that day.
Chanyeol doesn’t think it’s a good idea. However, Baekhyun does.
“Commander, a word?” Baekhyun asks once he’s relieved of duty, catching up to Chanyeol who had been trying to leave the bridge before he was spotted.
“Of course,” Chanyeol replies calmly, even as his heart speeds in his chest.
Baekhyun quirks an eyebrow, an almost knowing look on his face. “My quarters then.”
It’s a terrible idea, but Chanyeol follows, perhaps because there seems to be a promise in the way Baekhyun sways his hips, or perhaps because he’s too lost in his own curiosity. He’s been told on more than one occasion that it’s going to get him into trouble, but so far all it’s done is earn him several promotions.
Chanyeol peers around Baekhyun’s room; it’s tidy, everything in its place. Even his bed is made.
“It seems to me,” Baekhyun begins, dragging his uniform shirt off over his head without pause, “that you’ve just realized what I am.”
Chanyeol tries Very Hard not to look at Baekhyun as he changes, but Baekhyun isn’t trying to hide himself and his body is pleasing to admire - at least at a safe distance. It isn’t long before Baekhyun is pulling on a plain white shirt and gray cotton pants, interrupting Chanyeol’s descent into his imagination.
“I apologize if I’ve made you uncomfortable,” Baekhyun adds, but he looks anything but apologetic when he crowds against Chanyeol.
Chanyeol finds himself sitting forcefully on Baekhyun’s bed, bouncing twice on the mattress as Baekhyun stands in front of him. As a tall man, Chanyeol is used to looking down at people, but now it’s Baekhyun peering down and Chanyeol feels terribly small. He swallows. “Y-You haven’t.” It’s not very convincing.
“If you like, you can question my practices to put your mind at ease. Or maybe there’s something else you’re more curious about,” Baekhyun purrs, the tip of his finger plucking at the collar of Chanyeol’s uniform top before trailing down to his stomach.
Chanyeol shudders, licking over his lips nervously as he tries not to let Baekhyun’s touch affect him. “I was wondering . . . “ Chanyeol’s voice cuts off with a hitch of his breath because Baekhyun has set his bottom - his very nicely rounded bottom - right in Chanyeol’s lap.
“There, now you don’t have to strain to see me. I’m right here.”
Chanyeol whimpers, a sound that has Baekhyun smirking, biting his lip as he waits patiently for Chanyeol to continue with his question. Chanyeol clears his throat, fingers flexing in the blanket beneath him to keep from reaching up to grab Baekhyun’s hips. “I was wondering,” he begins again, “why a vampire would want to go into space.”
Baekhyun’s nose scrunches and it’s adorable, but Chanyeol bites his tongue to keep from voicing it. “Back home, I spent centuries living in the shadows, keeping to the night because the light of the sun would turn me to ash.”
“But not out here,” Chanyeol breathes out in realization.
“Not through a meter of UV repellant shielding,” Baekhyun corrects. “There are even some planets I can visit during the daylight because their suns have a different enough composition and won’t burn me. I miss the heat, the way it feels on my face. Coming out here is second best.”
Baekhyun’s fingers are doing Things again, sweeping up Chanyeol’s chest, soft as they move up his neck to comb through Chanyeol’s hair. It’s soothing, distracting and Chanyeol leans in to the gentle touch.
“Is that all you wanted, Commander?” Baekhyun whispers. His eyes are shining and yet they’re still so dark, as if they could swallow Chanyeol entirely. “To know why I’m here?”
“No,” Chanyeol exhales and surely Baekhyun can hear the blood that’s rushing in Chanyeol’s ears, feel the way his skin is heating.
“What else can I do for my Commander?” Baekhyun entreats, head tilted as he rests his forearms on Chanyeol’s shoulders.
“What’s it like?” Chanyeol asks quietly, almost afraid that if he is too loud, it will ruin the moment. It feels as if they’re in a bubble, just the two of them, and Chanyeol wants to bask in it a little longer.
“Being a vampire?”
Chanyeol shakes his head briefly. “For the people you feed from. What do they feel?”
Baekhyun smiles broadly, all his teeth on display and his canines appear longer than they had before although Chanyeol could possibly write that off as his own imagination. “That is something I do not know. But would you like to find out?”
Chanyeol doesn’t resist the temptation to curve the palm of his hands around Baekhyun’s hips anymore and Baekhyun seems momentarily surprised at the action before it melts into a sinful smile.
“Or is the puppy all bark and no bite?” Baekhyun goades when Chanyeol makes no further move to answer.
Chanyeol leans forward, watches as the pupils of Baekhyun’s eyes expand, his mouth open and waiting. “Are you thirsty for me?”
“I have to drink daily,” Baekhyun replies, tightening his arms around Chanyeol’s neck to bring him in further. “But there are others I may feed from if you are not comfortable.”
“I am,” Chanyeol states firmly. He’s nervous, excited, completely enraptured and his head tilts until his neck is in Baekhyun’s line of sight. “I want you to drink from me.”
“Chanyeol,” Baekhyun moans, fingers snaking through Chanyeol hair before securing, fisted tight in the strands. “Don’t hold your breath,” Baekhyun instructs. “And hold on to me.”
Chanyeol doesn’t get a chance to ask why. Baekhyun’s teeth are sharp, sure when they bite into the side of Chanyeol’s neck. His mouth is hot, the punctures hotter and Chanyeol is unprepared for the pleasure that shoots down his spine the moment Baekhyun sucks a mouthful of blood from him. His fingertips press into Baekhyun’s hips, holding to him like he’s the anchor that will keep him from drowning in the crashing waves.
This is a different sort of feeling, something Chanyeol’s never experienced. He’s had his fair share of lovers, spent nights in beds that were not his own, but indulging in physical desire pales in comparison to what he’s experiencing with Baekhyun.
His eyes roll back, resisting the urge to lay down and hold Baekhyun to him, beg him never to let go. It’s sheer bliss that races from Baekhyun’s mouth and into Chanyeol’s body. Everything is hot, lights dancing in his vision as Baekhyun only holds him tighter. The soft noises Baekhyun makes with every swallow are music to Chanyeol, addicting. If Chanyeol were to search the universe for something to compare to this moment, he would find nothing.
Baekhyun releases him after what seems an eternity and Chanyeol slumps forward, forehead resting on Baekhyun’s shoulder as he fights to clear his head. He’s dizzy, breath coming out in pants as if he’s run a marathon.
“Steady your breathing or you’ll pass out,” Baekhyun whispers against the shell of Chanyeol’s ear. The hands he’d had in Chanyeol’s hair are now running soothingly up and down his back. “When you’re feeling better, you need to go to the mess. Eating will help although you will be weaker tomorrow.”
“How do they do it?” Chanyeol groans, still clutching to Baekhyun.
“Do what?” Baekhyun asks softly. His voice runs like silk through Chanyeol’s body and he lifts his head, his gaze fixed on Baekhyun’s blood stained lips.
“Give you up after that.”
Baekhyun grins fondly at Chanyeol, cupping his face. “You are something else, Commander Park. But I could not feed from the same person two days in a row without risking death.”
“Not even if I asked nicely?”
Baekhyun studies Chanyeol’s face, teeth scraping over his lower lip and wiping away more of the red. “You’re cute, but your request is impossible.”
“How long then? How long until you can drink from me again?”
Baekhyun stares at Chanyeol for a moment, blinking. “If you still wish me to, the regulation time period between feedings is five days to ensure your health.”
“I don’t want to wait five days to see you.” With the loss of blood, Chanyeol also seems to have lost his brain to mouth filter and everything just keeps spilling out.
“You see me every day on the bridge.”
“What about after?”
Baekhyun appears taken aback. “Like. . . a date?”
“Yes, I’d love to go on a date with you.” Alright, so maybe Chanyeol’s a little punch drunk as well.
Baekhyun laughs, but is quick enough to dodge the kiss Chanyeol was about to plant on his mouth. “Trust me, blood breath isn’t something you want to experience.”
Chanyeol pouts and Baekhyun kisses him on the cheek. It will do for now.
Chanyeol finds himself in Joonmyun’s office, a little unsure what his captain wants with him so early in the day. Joonmyun is reading his terminal and in a sudden move, slides the text from the terminal and blows it up so Chanyeol can read it hovering over the desk.
“Did you sign and submit the release to allow Baekhyun to feed from you before or after last night?” Joonmyun inquires, arms crossed and an eyebrow raised as he leans against his desk.
Chanyeol’s hand slaps down over the two wounds hidden under the high collar of his uniform. “How did you know?! You’re not psychic are you?”
Joonmyun rolls his eyes, standing to his full height. “Don’t be absurd. I’m not a mind-reader.”
Chanyeol relaxes a little.
“But Lu Han is.”
Chanyeol grows pale.
“Perhaps you should look over the personnel files now.”
Chanyeol thinks that’s a grand idea because he doesn’t know if he can take anymore surprises. Next thing he knows, someone’s going to tell him Kyungsoo down in engineering is a werewolf.
(Half an hour later, Chanyeol is sitting in stunned silence as the word werewolf is typed in for species underneath an academy picture of Kyungsoo.)
