Going through my old diaries I found this:

"I think to become a better writer, or even a better person, I must find a way of smashing myself to bits without knives or matches or boiling water. Think Boot Camp - Evey Hammond - Mortification - Fire - Baptism - Initiation - Hazing - Humiliation - Rebirth."

Or maybe something a little less literal; sometimes a step change in perspective or your mental models of the world can be just as transformative. A phoenix-like transformation of your mental state is ultimately going to be the most direct method of affecting the sort of fundamental change you're describing.

I don't date my diaries (weird... I don't know why) but I suspect that was written about two years ago. It just seemed quite an odd and surprising thing to have written.
