Have you ever read The Birds by Frank Baker? It's the book that the famous Hitchcock film is (very loosely) based on, and this reminds me of that a little bit if you're taking it in the direction I think you are, as that was mainly memoires looking back to the downfall of mankind and the world that sprung from the ashes.

I've not read it, but I will stick it on my reading list--it sounds very different from the film (which is also awesome)
