if you havent yet, read '1984' and 'brave new world'.
another good one from Aldous Huxley(brave new world) is "doors of preception". its about mind altering drugs, kind of timothy leary-esq.

in the hands of dante by nick tosches was great if you want a good fiction novel.
if you can stomach it, i really enjoyed i, claudius by robert graves, and the continuation claudius the god.
or read the elegant universe by brian greene. if you want the non-fiction angle.
