I have seen a few " friends memes" for lj survivors, but I have yet to find any new worth while communities! I left LJ for about a year, and came back to the death of all of my favorite communities. Hopefully we can find some new ones together :)

How active is it? Several posts per week.
Why you recommend it: I love learning and this comm is a great way to hear about new advances in science.

Name of Community: ontd_pucking

Topic: Hockey, ONTD-style! From the NHL to KLH and minor leagues, it caters to most hockey fans. Members posts news about teams and players, as well as Free For Alls, Party Posts, and Watch-A-Long posts for games.
How active is it? During the NHL season, it's very busy! In off-season, it settles down, but is still fairly active.
Why you recommend it: The members are great and it's a good way to get all of your hockey news in one place.

Topic: A community for posting pictures of absolutely everything [except porn]. Animals, buildings, people, memes, paintings, anything and everything is welcome! NSFW pictures are fine, just nothing that's outright porn.
How active is it? Many posts per day.
Why you recommend it: I love posting there and also seeing what the other members post.

How active is it?: Several posts a month, about 150 characters in play
Why you recommend it: Very laidback environment, very friendly players. Slow-tagging-friendly. We accept canon characters, but our events can be quite cracky (gender-benders, kiddification, animal transformations, even vampire melons bowling about the lawn in the summer).

How active is it: It's a moderated comm so you submit entries & the mod will mass-accept them, so at least once a week you have abour 3-5 entries to read.
Why you rec it: It has a lot of helpful links to cheap doctors, dentists, schools, car places, coupons, deals going on, do it yourself recipes/home remedies, it's awesome! You can also ask questions like, how do I get on WIC or lower my rent or whatevs.
