Spike in season 8 - thoughts on what's going to happen to him

Clearly I’ve too much time on my hands but I’ve found my thoughts turning to how is S8 going to end for Spike. I’ve no interest in any of the other story points so I’m not going to pretend I do and instead want to lay out my selection of thoughts as to what is going to happen to Spike. The only thing I know going into this is that Spike is

I hope you don't mind me following you to your LJ. Your point 8 is interesting to me, because I have this mad idea that Spike will shanshu at the end of season 8. I'm probably nuts to even think it, but there it is.

Not at all. As you can see I've just embarked and am mostly just musing to myself. I certainly don't discount the shanshu idea and for all we know it could be what we're seeing at the end of the preview for #39.

I don't know how I feel about the idea but it'd very much depend on where they take it really.

It just strikes me as a very Jossian thing to do - give the Shanshu to the vampire who really doesn't want it. Plus, there was the description of Spike as 'the new vampire of prophecy.' That hasn't been explained at all. I'm also not sure whether Joss thinks of Angel: After the Fall as part of his canon. He may not, which means that the last word on Angel and the Shanshu is that Angel signed it away.

If it does happen, we'll only find out at the very last minute - a tease for season 9. In the meantime, Spike will probably be sidelined.

Absolutely - it'd annoy large swathes of the fandom (the Spike fans who like him as a vampire and the Angel fans who view Shanshu as Angel's)- yet could open up areas for the character if done well. It'd also make the ship more important as Spike would need some toys and connections to stop him being just another guy with no powers to be of use to Buffy.

It's also possible that they'd do it and not be clear if this was the shanshu or some other prophecy at play if he does view After the Fall as canonical but considering how lax Joss can be with canon I can't see that worrying him over-much.
