Is my cat going blind?

The last couple months my cat has been meowing at 4 AM, after my daughter has gone to bed. She wanders the house, meowing until one of us gets up. As soon as someone gets up and sits in the living room, she goes over to her spot on the couch and goes to sleep. If we go to bed, she repeats the behavior ( Read more... )

Thanks for replying. She's been acting lethargic too, so I'm really worried about her. I'm going to take her to the vet and have her get a full workup.

I'm glad she's not the only cat that does this, but I'm sorry your cat is waking you, too.

Thanks again!

How old is she? She could be going blind (cloudy eyes can be either cataracts or herpes - cats get that in their eyes), but if she's old she could also be getting a bit of dementia. Animals get it same as humans, and it would explain her being lost and lonely in the night.

I was wondering about the possibility of dementia, as I was discussing her with another nurse friend of mine, and we both thought that if she were a human of the same age, we would be considering dementia. Part of it is the consistency of the timing--the cat used to meow at 5 in the morning for food, but now she wants company.

Poor little moggie. We're going to have to organize the house so she is not confused by all the things lying about. She has a folded towel on the couch that she sleeps on, with a water dish on another towel in the living room. Her box is also inside. She is probably going to be an exclusively indoor cat from here on out.

Thanks!
