So, how is it that not everyone understands that there is a difference between a provincial and a federal election, or government? I have run into more then a few people who are "not voting liberal because they don't like Campbell" which really makes absolutely no sense to me since Campbell as BC's premiere runs for the provincial liberals and this ( Read more... )

I'm guilty of that comment. :( But doesn't Campbell, although provincial belong to the same group of folk and don't his orders come down the line from Ottawa? I'm still learning this stuff. Either way, I don't believe in strategic voting..ie voting liberal in hopes that the conservatives don't get in or whatever.. vote for the party that shares in your ideals. Well unless you actually do want to vote for the liberals, then yeah do it..but in my case, although I knew a Green Party member was unlikely to get in, that's what I believe in, so that's where I put my vote. I'm tired. sleep now.

You weren't the only person that said that to me, actually I think I ran into about 10 other people who said such a thing and I think that this is something that everyone should understand when they are voting. No the premiere does not answer to the prime minister on provincial matters unless these are matters that effect the entire country. The federal government is in charge of all things that effect the whole of Canada, while the provincial government is looking out for the whole of their one province which is 1/13th of Canada (well actually this works differently in the territories and I'm not 100% sure as to how but the federal government has much more say over what happens there then in the provinces). I do think that many people have this core belief that ultimately the primeminister is giving out the orders to everything that happens in Canada, but generally the prime minister is a really busy guy and he wouldn't sleep for his entire term (which could last up to 5 years) if this was so. Also the federal government and the ( ... )

no no no.. if I was taking offence you'd know :p. Just clarifying since politics more or less go right over my head, which I wish they didn't.

PS I think I was rambling about my dislike of strategic voting because I was talking about that on msn at the time, not aimed at you or anything you said.. :p does it help that I don't even remember writing that in my comment to you? I think I had a long day yesterday.. most of what I said or wrote made less sense than usual last night.

Good, because I quite like you. :)

Strategic voting is stupid, I say match up your voting to your belief systems rather then voting with the masses. That is why it is so important to research your parties and candidates, and I personally think it is important for everyone to understand the basics of the governmental system especially as voters. :)
