Independence.   What is it?   I thought I knew.   But I am really starting to believe that don't have the tiniest inkling of the concept.  I have known for years that I am co-dependent.  I feel by nature that I am. I see very independent people everyday and I envy them.  Why can't I get it?  Why can't I be independent?  I too want to stand on my ( Read more... )

I'll be your functional philosopher. Just post any question, and I'll answer! I've been to several psychologists over the past year - from PhD's to social workers to psychiatrists, and I've discovered one thing among them all - they lack imagination. While its true they have formal training and I do not, they way I explained it to them was that they chose open-mindedness as a career. They can go home if they like and stew in their close-mindedness after work if they so choose. Me? I chose it as a lifestyle, which makes me far more flexible and passionate.

Let's begin, shall we?

You are not a lost cause. Even if you ask, "Am I a lost cause?" every day for the next 15 years. Why? People who are lost causes don't ask themselves that question! They don't even recognize that they may be (in this case) co-dependent, and if they do, they don't strive to change. So right out of the starting gate you're way ahead because of those two things, and that's more to build on than most people :)

Eric, you have always been one of the most awesome human beings I've interacted with :D And you are 100% correct. I've come to fully recognize something that has been a problem in my life. Now I can strive for independence. I have launched a full out war on my laziness, procrastination and lack of prioritizing, which I believe is the root. Thank you! :D

Fantastic post. I've missed your journal. And I do feel renewed inner strength. The huge gorilla is off my back. I mean, he may be in the corner staring at me but at least he's off finally. :D
