More library musings

I don't hate books. They feel great to the touch and they keep working no matter how beat up or soggy they get. But they're a huge physical burden en masse and only the technical books have a search function - something in the back called an 'index.' When the Kindle and its kin get high res with colour I will probably stop owning books and ( Read more... )

The psychic weight of my books' physical weight doesn't stop me admiring nice libraries, though :-)

But then what happens when all the hard drives crash?

btw, how much hard drive space do you have? Combined, I seem to have 5Tb and yet I can never find what I want...

I have half that and can pull up decades-old obscure files in seconds :-)

Note that I don't count backup as available storage space, and then there's the server I left running in Berkeley when I moved to Texas :-)

Actual physical drives:

Laptop: 320GB

Drive 1A and 1B: 2TB each (I backup the laptop in Drive 1A)
Drive 2A and 2B: 750GB each
Drive 3A and 3B: 750GB each

Server: 1TB of RAID5 storage (4 x 500GB)

Typical usage:

I write to Drive 3A and back it up to Drive 3B. When 3A fails, I start using 3B and buy a new 3A for backup. Then when 3B fails, I go back to using 3A as the main drive and buy a new 3B. And so on. If 3A and 3B manage to fail at the same exact time, I'm hosed.

Another fantastic tool for backup is Sharing All Your Cool Stuff With Your Friends :-)
