When we ran a small paper here, an editor turned us all on to Secret Agent. As a bunch of cretins interested in the arts, we could never agree on what music to play in the office, and that solved it. It also became a frequent go-to when I was working by myself on paper stuff.
I've sometimes tuned in Groove Salad or Space Station Soma when I have trouble sleeping, or just want to chill.
I've been really impressed with Soma, and since we've been wanting to do something similar I've tried to study their model. I agree that they're of the old school of Internet streaming, and I think they provide a very good example of how to do it best. I haven't been very impressed with many of the later examples.
Aspiring radio stations are almost always stressful affairs, packed with music nuts who aggressively firehose their love of music out into space.
Thing I love about somaFM is that it seems unattended. They just set down the streams like coasters on a tabletop and step away quietly to mind the store while I browse. Edit: I was going to edit this comment to be less sloppy on the metaphors but I've decided to hell with it :-)
